while i love Bostridge i have to agree with you. The vid doesn't do the singer nor the composer justice. The song says "sky".. we see the sky, it says "field" we see a field.. *amused* . and the lip synch doesn't quite work. The timing is fine, but it feels unreal.. . .. reverb in a field ? ;p This said, i just change window and listen to the music :)
j'ai entendu tout ce qui avait a entendre, mais aucun n'a étais capable de m'émouvoir comme ce jeune homme.Williams aurait était heureux de cette interprétation digne du raffinement Anglais.
Lovely strong but subtle voice and interpretation - love the video and your performance both vocally and visually. Helps to bring people in to the music and the concept without having to struggle (I'm operatically-trained and have had to try to find ways to help people who aren't into opera to understand and enjoy it). Very pleasant experience listening to, and watching, you in this. Kudos to the singer, the accompanist, and the filmmaker!
Bloody hell, you can't have listened to many versions! In my opinion this is too precious, lacking any fullness in voice. The dynamics are too held. It's as if he has been told that this song is some sweet ditty when really it is full of strong contrasts that are not realised in this rendition. Listen to Tom Allen, Quirk, Luxen and many others before this dull period of singing that we have to put up with today.
I've seen a few of these art song and aria music videos. Angela Gheorghiu has done a few. I like the idea. Maybe they should have a Classical Much Music that plays all these videos and interviews singers and 21st century composers. Someday...
@psychicbyinternet I agree! I hate when they try to make classical music "clever", and focus too much on looks, but videos such as these are really beautiful, and I think appeal to a wide audience! I hope to have a career in opera and classical music, and I will definitely be an advocate for this type of medium.
This lovely interpretation by Ian Bostridge of Silent Noon is as good as the John Shirley Quirke version on songs of travel.I don`t think I can praise Ian any more than this. I would think also that there have not been many Englist tenors as good as Ian Bostridge!!!. At least I hope he is English. I know J.S.Q is a baritone!!.

Fine production,(altho i prefer my own imagination!),and sensitive version. Just a thought: imagine this song without: Harmony Tempo Rythm Texture Color Introduction Postlude.... Just a naked vocal line... That essential make-or-break participant, the PIANIST, should ALWAYS be credited!
This is beautiful!!
