Saw this as a kid but most of it just went over my head. An amazing series it taught me that science fiction could be subtle and clever. It's a crime most of it was erased. At least we have the book if they want to remake it, but would they spoil it all by dumbing it down.
Yup the BBC in all their infinite wisdom saw fit to wipe so many interesting things..It was company policy I believe..They never reckoned that 40 or 50 years on folk like us would wanna sit on youtube and re-live them..Instead they kept trooping the colour and the like..Idiots!!
The Andromeda Anthology consisting of what is left of A for Andromeda plus stills 'screen shots' of all scenes of every episode plus all of The Andromeda Breakthrough plus the documentary Andromeda Memories is available as a boxed set from the BBC. I bought it and it is definitely worth buying. I watched it when I was a kid. It's a classic. So sad most of A for Andromeda did not survive.
When I was 10 I watched A for Andromeda weekly but in the end was forbidden because of the scary box characters could not help but be drawn into, to certain death. Fab to be able to watch it on my computer all these years later!
In 1972 RAI made an Italian version of this, called 'A come Andromeda', in 5 episodes. Fortunately, it still exists and was recently published on DVD. It starred a great Italian actor called Luigi Vannucchi in the role of John Fleming. Famous singer Patti Pravo should have played the role of Andromeda, but she retired during the making.
Thank you for posting this. I had no idea it existed. I thought the BBC had wiped the whole serial. I was 10 when it came out and was rivited to the tv screen. It was way ahead of it's time. Very special.

Many thanks for posting this. I've read about this for years and had all but given up hope of ever seeing any of it.
