I'er just heard of this guy c 14 mins ago, the local radio puts on jazz & classic R&B on sunday e'ens. He is quite good too. I'm planning to "keep in touch"!
Not anymore - check out "The United States of Mind" released on CD as part of the limited-edition Blue Note Connoisseur series in 2004. It includes "That Healin' Feelin'", "Total Response", and "All." (1970-72).
He's great, I remember Kenny Barron talking about him a lot and I've finally checked him out. Very impressed, one of the best vocalists I've ever heard. Hip scat too.
An incredible singer. I implore anyone who claims to love real music especially jazz to search for his products especially the cd "Andy Bey and The Bey Sisters". That album has changed my life and would be one of two or three items I'd take with me on a desert island.
Sad but true! There are so many unappreciated, gifted artists. Most of these artists are not willing to compromise their talent for commercialism. So, they only reach a certain level of notoriety. Interestingly, the record companies can convince the weak-minded masses to follow extremely talented artists like Andy Bey. But, I guess that cuts down the volume of puppets manufactured in the garbage factory of mainstream music!
It's the same ol' song -- brilliant talent unappreciated because of an extremely singular artistic vision. This dynamic does not mesh with the agenda of the "powers that be."
