I'm not a fan of avant-garde music. I find it tends to be a place for pretentious egotists to hide behind curtains and compose esoteric nonsense.
This is not esoteric and it's not nonsense. This piece is very well-thought-out. The structure is audible and it gave me a pretty complex emotional reaction.
I'll have to look up George Crumb, I guess. Nice work to the performers as well!
Amazing interpretation of this very moving work. Kronos was always my favorite performance but these guys are quite amazing! What a bizarre work this is, yet every time I hear it, it moves and shakes me to my foundation.
I assumed from listening to the Kronos CD that this piece was at least somewhat improvisational, so it's weird to see that every little sound is completely intentional. I know nothing about music, but I'm curious what the notation must look like.
Same here, VitricArt. I think my first acquaintance with it was a Nonesuch record from the early 70`s and I believe now as I did then that it is undoubtedly one of the most, if not THE most, bizarre string quartets ever composed. It leaves one with a peculiar sense of awe by its conclusion.
I've been hooked on this piece since I first heard it 25 somewhat years ago. To finally see it performed is an absolute treat! Thank you for posting it!
What a fantastic piece, and great performance! I was stunned the first time I heard this composition at a concert - one of my greatest musical experiences. Thanks for sharing this!

To top Kronos is almost unheard of but Arsis4 do it. Sensitive, powerful interpretation. Kudos to a quartet that should go far in the coming years.

Wow, wow, wow... that was a-maz-ing. I only planned on sampling the first few minutes, but I got sucked in for all three videos. Just... wow. O_O

I've been a fan of this piece since the famous recording by Kronos. A nightmarishly beautiful work.
