@hoxvoxbox not only is he one of the best players technically,a great fingerstyle player and riff miester with an unmatched style,but he has written timeless songs with more substance then anything in todays mainstream,if you look at lead guitarists while also being the frontman he is in a league with Jimi and thats about it. my top 4 is Gilmour, Petrucci,Buckethead & Knopfler,im not saying theyre the best but no doubt in most ppls top 50,to say Knopfler is somewhere in the top 500 is laughable

Good guitarist, great personality (one of the few you recognize at first notes) and made with dire straits a couple of monster records with a main role in the history of rock. But saying that he's the best with Jimi Hendrix ever, well, it's a little too much. For both, I think that Joe Pass or Allan Holdsworth, just to name two totally different artists, are really on another planet. And many other names come in my mind: Fred Frith, Robert Fripp, Jimmy Page, Steve Morse, S.R. Vaughn...
