4.8s, 5.3s, and 6.0s have been cast in both materials over the years. It depends on the RPO code of the engine. The first year of the 6.0, as a truck motor in '99, had cast iron heads. Besides that, the heads on all Gen III/IV engines have been aluminum. A fully assembled engine with a cast iron block, and aluminum heads is only about 88 lbs. heavier than its all aluminum counterparts. Not that much heavier, if you think about it. Plus, iron blocks can accept a .030" overbore, where...
Its apparently a Vortec 5.3 The RPO engine code varied by year and application. But if it has a cast iron block, its more than likely an LM7. If its aluminum, its an LY5. Like I mentioned though, it varies. The LSX is not a whole engine, or production block, but rather a performance block released by GMPP a couple years ago. Its made of cast iron, and has many performance oriented features. Its the only GM product officially denoted as "LSX".
@nickg421 a 5.3l came out of the trucks and ussually comes with an iron block. In this case they put corvette accessories like the intake and valve covers on it to make it look like a corvette engine. The truck engines like the 5.3l come from the factory with high rise intakes
what does the truck run w/o nitrous? whats done to the motor?

hey dude, you put in that 5.3? how hard was it, i wanna put a 350 5.7 in one, do you think it would be tha same?
cameronmccloure 1 year ago
@cameronmccloure its easier to put a 350 in one. they make kits that make it pretty much a bolt-in thing
savagexhaley14 1 year ago
they basically are the same block, the 5.3 is iron and basically everything bigger is aluminum,a tad stronger but much heavier

...the steel or iron cylinder liners in an aluminum block can only go about .010", before a new liner would have to replace it.
madtownmadman 2 years ago
they are not the same blocks at all
mickflick777 2 years ago

LonewolfG36C 2 years ago

josh08336 2 years ago
All Gen III/IV engines have six bolt mains. Be they aluminum or cast iron.
