What an incredibly beautiful film! I've always been a sucker for a good romantic film but this one- this one is sublime! Celia Johnson, with her homely, funny little face, gives a heartbreaking performance that remains with you forever. The Oscars, as always, got it wrong- she and not Olivia de Havilland, whom I adore, gave the best performance by an actress in 1946.
Truly wonderful direction and acting. However, the, admittedly authentic,Received Pronunciation of the Upper Middle Class as used by both the male and female protagonists sounded uncomfortably snobbish and affected to working class ears when the film first came out and ,now, also sounds archaic. The lovely Joanna Lumley still talks in a similar but not identical fashion that is, nevertheless, pleasant to all including proletarian ears, and even Her Majesty sounds less posh these days.

One of those movies made on a shoestring budget and yet... always remembered! Great musical score, wonderful acting. Thanks for posting, five stars!
