If the country was under attack, she wouldn't have been able to call anyone. In the days before, all non essential phone lines would be disconnected at the exchanges. Only those for official and essential business would be availible.
@AT88TV Accidental retransmission of the header caused a second incident of the alert message early into the first mesage. Some of the equipment played the entire looped message and others found it cut off at that point due to seeing the EOM (end of message) command incorectly. Noise was either rampant or acceptable because AM is narrow and the equipment noise in the message was diminished.
In Riverside County - Palm Springs, CA we hear those television emergency alerts almost weekly about possible flash floods. They are so annoying - it's almost like crying wolf now.
@crazyknight2008 As is mention barely a minute intothe story, it was a REAL signal and transmited by ERROR by a NY area agency's cue insetead of an internal test.
Much the same happened in 1971 I believe it was when a real test with valid codes was played instead of the regular test tape cartridge. YES, Doomsday was brought to you by a Fidelipac and it took twenty minutes to notify all stations it was an error.
If they run tones folks hate it and if not it's not working-AAAAAAGH!
I'm not one for conspiracies but you gotta think about what if there was an actual threat but it got neutralized fast so the government covered it up as an accident. But then again every major city would have gotten the signal if it were legit.
Yes, this kind of thing does happen accidentally. I love all the conspiracy theorists latching on to everything they can to discredit our government. And by love, I mean they can suck my ass!
Regarding the question about why would someone by instinct think that the country was being attacked... If you grew up in certain decades, we were all trained to listen for these messages - and even expect them. Fortunately, all that training was not necessary.
It probably was real. The threat was neutralized quickly and rather than scare the shit out of everyone... They say Whoops... accident! Come on man. they're still pushing the "Airplane contrail" bull as the explanation for what was seen shooting into the sky off the west coast last year. Wake up peeps!
Illinois is so messed up. The False Alarm of 1971 on WOWO, The Max Headroom Incident of 1987, now this. I feel sorry for these people, they have to spend all of their money on new pants :)

Hey, since they played the eas header on TV and were possibly a PEP couldn't they have caused another alert. Lol just saying. Like the ARCO BP radio spot?

@StarCraftDude1234 You're quite brave. I don't live in America (I live in shitty Britain) If I was you and seen that at 7:30am, I would have been shitting and panicking myself. But if I were you, I'd go nuts.

See? This is how rumors get spread and people wind up acting like morons... because of this woman. All she did was hear that noise, assumed something bad happened, and was going to call all her friends and say "GET TO THE BASEMENT!"... She should be shot... or at least slapped around.
that woman is retarted. EVERY EAS opertaror knows that when the sound goes off, that means that it accedently completed the cycle. i mean come on, think logic. Why would the government send out an ean or eas with only the sound and no information?
@Airlineboy4590 A) Um, because the government has trouble doing a lot of things right.
B)Rely on the government protecting you then you are crazy.
Example, Hurricane is going up the East coast for the past two days. Mayors, the President, and all kids of local officials are telling people to leave or take shelter on higher ground........really....REALLY??? The smart people already had a plan while the idiots need instructions. Should have already prepped for the disaster.
could have been testing internally amoung emergency services for a real alert coming up, whos knows what intel knew at the time? just went public too early, those presidential speech notification messages dont go out unless serious.
@123Blackkitty If there was a flood of people it was a flood of idiots. There is NO evidence I can find that anything came up saying "Emergency Action Notification" So it could have easily have been an AMBER alert. People like the lady in the clip in my opinion just wanted to be scared for no reason.
@HunterM28025 Someone who in my opinion dreams of another 9-11 like it is some new dinner discussion. Disgusting idiots!
Thinks of calling and saying to take cover when in any REAL attack the phone lines would INSTANTLY Jam and be cleared of ability to dial any number other than 911. BASIC EAN procedure is to NOT use the telephone.
Thinks hearing some confused radio host who obviously does not know what his EAS equipment was for = attack.
@HunterM28025 Are you american? If not you wouldn't understand but ever since 9/11 the worst comes to mind when you hear those EAS tones at the beginning. I live right across the river from new york city and 9/11 was the scariest day in my life. Everytime they put the EAS tones up as weekly test i'm ready to dive into my basement...
@HunterM28025 Maybe because she is old enough to remember the Cuban missile crisis, how about 9/11, maybe because people ARE trying to attack us, and when someone sets off the real thing (even though it was a mistake) we should all just ignore it because you think it is weird that we think that we are being attacked. Those twin towers just fell all by them self, didn’t they. Tell ya what, pull your head out of your butt and look at the sunshine for a bit, because it has been a while for ya!
@NextVideoGames Then if you are correct that woman is an idiot in my opinion. There was NO Indication of EAN. No screen or video and the audio was only of some guy who cant work a EAS receiver.
But that station gives her air time despite KNOWING there was NO POSSIBLE way for her to think it was an EAN over an AMBER ALERT. Does your grandma call for you to take cover over an Amber Alert thinking we are under attack?
IDIOTS! They treat EAS like it is entertainment when it saves lives!
Hm. There wasn't any on screen instructions, so how could that woman assume it was a national emergency? It could have been a test of the system that was malfunctioning (Which it pretty much was, except instead of mechanical error it was the human element. Just like the EBS false alarm of 1971.) I would have been worried myself, but not whether it was a national emergency or not, but whether it was a tornado or flood warning or just a test. Mostly because I live in Florida.
In my opinion it is because some people think just because the other side got elected the terra terra terras are going to attack any time now. I think they are nuts and want any excuse to be scared and to scare others.
I have not seen any photos or evidence that there was anything on screen except the usual programming. A subpart of EAS activates text visual and I doubt it got sent during the accident. Just the SAME header meaning no text in my opinion.
I can hardly believe how silly that woman acted in the video in my opinion.
First of all Why the heck use the telephone that is the FIRST thing major incident warnings tell you not to do.
Second from the video it seems to have been the Audio only activation I diddnt see any video showing "Emergency Action Notification" Nor was it mentioned she had ANYTHING that could decode the EAS signal. She just assumed terra terra terra when EAS sounded in my opinon and that is wrong.
What? Do you think people kill themselves over hearing a tornado warning EAS? Or a Tstorm warning EAS? If anyone did something so silly just because an EAS tone was heard it is their own damn fault.
You CAN NOT decode an EAS signal with your ears. It is digital and fits a boatload of info into each pulse. Only stations saw the printout read "Emergency Action Notification" And as that station was supposed to be primary some gov official would be there if it was real.
A federal emergency is never severe weather or an Amber Alert. A federal emergency is when Bush, Obama, or whoever is president has to come on and adress the entire nation at once of a crisis such as an invasion. It is something that has never been done in the history of the EAS.
Nor has it been done in the history of US Alert systems.
That is the main reason why EBS and EAS were given more and more local power. A great deal of money is spent on maintaining those systems so they do better if they can serve local use.
I live in Illinois and I remember this. Later that day the EAS had to be used for a real emergency when we were under a Flash Flood Warning; but it was so screwed up from this earlier mistake that the EAS malfunctioned and many people were unaware of the flood danger.
That was likely because idiot station managers tried to override their EAS boxes (A violation of law) Instead of waiting the 5 or so minutes before the termination signal was sent.
Completely different situation. It did not "Fail" human error activated it accidentally. but the chain worked unlike the EBS of 1971 where no automation caused inexperienced managers and disc jockeys to forget or ignore the warning.
@Zachstar2000 The other issue with the 1971 incident that made most managers disregard it was the fact that it was issued at the same time that the weekly test alert was issued (about 9:30 a.m. EST on Saturday). Most station managers assumed that it was a mistake for that reason. What many of them failed to realize was that this would be a perfect time for the Soviets to attack, as most stations would ignore the alert.
That was why EBS was MASSIVELY overhauled after that incident from what I understand. Soviets would have had a much harder time surprising people afterwords.
LOL! people are so hard up for action in their dull boring lives these days, they jump all over stuff like this.... wanting the best of course, but probably somewhere deep down secretly hoping for some action... something exciting to happen... okay maybe I'm speaking for myself here a bit... but still...glad it wasn't a real emergency ^^
@AlexplusChris Something like this happened a few years ago, when I lived in Chicago, telling us to evacuate the state, scared the holy shit out of me. It turned out to be an error on the part of the people in charge.
While EAS is most often used on a local level for things like weather warnings, it's primary purpose is to give the president a last-effort way to talk to the American people. The problem is that there isn't any way to accurately test a national EAS alert (a.k.a. an Emergency Action Notification) without sending a real EAN. FEMA was testing a new satellite alert network, sent a real EAN, but a contractor didn't follow instructions, thus this.
she meant that the specfic emergency action notification that went off by mistake would have normally been issued to alert viewers of a federal emergency, not the whole EAS itself
It's like "Uh OOPS we pressed the "DO NOT PRESS " Button "

IAmNotAFunguy 1 year ago
@IAmNotAFunguy
Nor has it been done in the history of US Alert systems.
That is the main reason why EBS and EAS were given more and more local power. A great deal of money is spent on maintaining those systems so they do better if they can serve local use.
Zachstar2000 1 year ago
If that happend nationally I'd be like omg gotta go 2 a gunstore and get a gun and some ammo an barricade ourselves inthere

@mjtheman23 nuclear attacks can happen at any time man if i heard this type of mistaken warning i would of token similar precautions.

I live in Illinois and I remember this. Later that day the EAS had to be used for a real emergency when we were under a Flash Flood Warning; but it was so screwed up from this earlier mistake that the EAS malfunctioned and many people were unaware of the flood danger.
lightningbolt99999 1 year ago
@lightningbolt99999
That was likely because idiot station managers tried to override their EAS boxes (A violation of law) Instead of waiting the 5 or so minutes before the termination signal was sent.

They failed in 1971 too. Now they have failed AGAIN.
Talic3 1 year ago
@Talic3
Completely different situation. It did not "Fail" human error activated it accidentally. but the chain worked unlike the EBS of 1971 where no automation caused inexperienced managers and disc jockeys to forget or ignore the warning.
Zachstar2000 1 year ago
@Zachstar2000 The other issue with the 1971 incident that made most managers disregard it was the fact that it was issued at the same time that the weekly test alert was issued (about 9:30 a.m. EST on Saturday). Most station managers assumed that it was a mistake for that reason. What many of them failed to realize was that this would be a perfect time for the Soviets to attack, as most stations would ignore the alert.
TomBarristerX 1 year ago
@TomBarristerX

One the plus side, we know it works now...
compboy1 2 years ago 4
A federal emergency? Uhh, no, it can be for child abductions and severe weather alerts, not to mention tests. My god.
Obstkuchen11 2 years ago
she meant that the specfic emergency action notification that went off by mistake would have normally been issued to alert viewers of a federal emergency, not the whole EAS itself
mjtheman23 2 years ago
Ah, yes, makes sense. But that one woman seemingly paniced right when she heard the signal.
Obstkuchen11 2 years ago
@mjtheman23 She referred to the signal as "unusual". It's not.
Obstkuchen14 1 year ago
@Obstkuchen11 No one has ever, nor will they ever, active the EAS for a child abduction.
