My admiration for Lush has only increased through the years. They are my favorite band of the 90's and thankfully I got to see them live in Sept 1996. A truely amazing band on all levels.
This music doesn't sound dated at all. It sounds like it could have come out yesterday. Emma and Miki wrote a lot of really great songs. Few bands have a more tragic story than Lush.
why have I never heard of Lush... I lived in so. cali at the time and obsessed on new bands but I just found Lush a week ago. It's like they just came out to me Thank you 120 minutes (4:15 am) for giving me my new favorite band...about 20 years late but F*** there good
lush are in a class all by themselves, they played an important role in indie music...ride,chapterhouse,slowdive,MBV,etc...all excellent and relevant there is nothing that compares to that time era...beautiful music no doubt about it...
I know that I talk too much... Damn Eristoff vodka and New Amsterdam gin... Fucking late night/early morning libations... Anyway, this song and vid are in my top 20 faves of all time... No further explanation is required...
@ghostecho09 You were at Numbers on pyramids? Good for you!!! The ONLY city I have EVER found pyramids in was Houston. It's a fucking shame because that was the best trip I ever had in my life.
Like I said on facebook a few days ago: Lady Gaga (cough cough spit) needs to take a few listens and looks at this song and vid and get a fucking clue... :)
What superb sonic bliss and a fantastic vid to boot... I remember swooning every time I heard Miki's voice and - guess what? I was 16 then and now I'm 36, and my heart still skips like a million fucking beats with every word she sings... WOW... What pure gold and silver strings...
They weren't good times, but they were made bearable by Miki and Emma...and even now when life is still no better, I can disappear into the web of their beautiful harmonies.
Exactly!! I'm not a big STP fan by any means, but have always liked 'Big Bang Baby'. As a matter of fact, I listened to it about a month ago, and had a same thought: "God, this part sounds just like Lush!". Anyway, It's kind of cool to run into someone else who has noticed the very same thing.
oasis suck compare to the class, glamour, elegance of this music.. Lush was for me the best band after the " the smiths " era in britain. and certainly they were up there along with suede until they turned into a crap band...........
@johannesjuanes I just find these to be two very different bands, i.e., Oasis and Lush. The thing I like most about Miki besides her vocals is her twelve string. I remember buying 'Spooky' when I was in Toronto not long after it came out. I just wanted to buy something at random. I'm still listening to those songs.
The seamless flow of energy in this song always amazes me; It just flows and flows and flows without the drag of transitions that other songs have. Another song from that era which struck me the same way was "Would" by Alice in Chains.
This really is such an ethereally beautiful song; lighter than air, yet grounded in perfect structure. It puts me in a better place whenever I hear it. And Miki and Emma are very beautiful .
This is just perfect song! Simple cords, great melody, tempo, complimenting vocals. No trying to over top it! Just let flow. I hear all 00's shit sooo over trying without talent.
The grind of the rhythm guitars is much cleaner (better) than the album mix, although I like the echo(y) mixes of the other songs on Spooky, especially the song "Monochrome." Robin Guthrie knew what he was doing when it came to the two female vocals. Amazing, still love it.
why does this video always runs so slow? is it a curse or what? i mean if you watch some justin beaver crap it will load like in less time than flash takes taking a crap....
I wish Youtube would stop putting up suggestions for "Lush Cosmetics" when I'm looking at videos of Lush the band. On the other hand it's kinda funny, I guess.
Priviledged to have seen Lush on a 4a showcase at the 9:30 Club in DC probably not too long before Chris Acland took his own life, and the band was through. As amazing live as they were on record, and hearing Miki and Emma on harmonies takes me straight back to college days. A sound gone way too soon.
i read it as more subtle than that - about a girl (girls in general) who supress their own personality to please their partner (being what they think he wants her to be) purely for the sake of feeling wanted - obviously that doesnt sustain a relationship but the subject of the song doesnt see that and starts the cycle again - one of a number of lush lyrics (it seems to me) pointing out that people arent always their own best friends when it comes to relationships
Such a pretty song by pretty women. I wish that they would have continued without their mate, but respect them for their decision. There is an online Bring Back Miki Campaign to which she responds, "I guess its flattering that anybody gives a shit. Not sure how enthusiastic the support would be if they realised that bringing back Miki Berenyi would deliver a 40-year-old office employee with greying hair who's still struggling to shift the weight from her last pregnancy"
@ToCuTe4Ya1 No, they broke up a long time ago. One of the male members hanged himself and the band called it quits. None of them have made music other than very small time stuff. The singer, Miki, supposedly works editing a magazine or something. I kind of respect that, as sad as it is.
I love the sound Lush had. I've never heard anybody that sounded like them. I guess later on they got heavier. Sadly their drummer hung himself. I have one obscure CD called Gala which has some really good songs.
@Groovery well yes and no, they have a lot in common with My Bloody Valentine and then mainstream bands like Curve stole a bit of their sound. Then you have stuff like Slowdive etc. Early Stereolab is kind of like them a little bit too. There can be only one Lush though. She's still one of the only girls I've seen that actually looked good with pink hair.
You could be right I forgot that I really stopped paying attention to new music right after Lush. I just thought the chord progressions and harmonies of Lush were pretty unique.
Lush had a uniqueness for sure. A lot of the music at the time had been playing around with the same ideas. Great stuff tho, I used to be pretty into them back in the day.
I went to Lollapalooza in 92 just to see Lush! The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ministry, Ice Cube, and Pearl Jam was just bonus to me. I used to think Miki was so hot back then. Still smokin!
I saw them in Boston. People kept on stage diving then Micki asked them to stop. Then some idiot did it again and nearly knocked down a speaker stack so they walked off. Cant blame them. Aside from that it was a nice show. About
Oh yeah. That's why I had a huge crush on Miki. I saw them in 1992 at Lollapalooza and snuck up to the front. She was so hot!!!! She has an incredible voice too.
Such a wonderfully unique beautiful sounding band. One of my favs, just wish i would have heard of them in high school when they only had a couple of albums outinstead of a few years ago
what a great tune....brings back good shoegazing memories. i was driving solo from chicago to dc one summer and all i had were two cds with me: lush's spooky and the smith's the queen is dead. made for a good ride.
continued - duh!! Silly little girl denies Every understanding why Her face is full of sad surprise Everytime she hears him cry What do you feel when you're with me? I look in your eyes and see myself But there's no connection Just his own reflection Isn't this the way you wanted me? (What do you mean?) In love with you (What do I feel?) Do anything (What do you mean?) For you
man, i remember being sort of obsessed with lush, esp. phillip ;p and so wanting 2 understand the lyrics back 15 yrs ago.
anyway...enjoy part of the lyrics 2many characters 2 post...
Pretty little girl, she shines-Knowing she is young, she smiles-Happy just to be a prize-Happy just to see his smile-Silly little girl, she tries-Thinking she is good and wise-Doesn't recognise the lies-Pouring from her lips, she sighs-"This is so real-It's what I feel-I look in your eyes-and lose myself".....
I'm too old (30) to keep up with the current indie stuff. I like some of the indie-pop stuff (like The Kills) - but if you know some quality stuff, name drop!
This is the track that got me into Lush back in 1992. One of the best Indie bands ever and so sad that they ended in such sad circumstances just as the hits began to flow.
I love this band have since 92 and the Spooky release. Sad Sad friggin story about how this band ended. The drummers suicide his name was Chris I believe and Mikis devastation and trauma form it causing her to leave the industry. Just as depressing as the collapse of Pantera I mean I know that metal I am just saying. Miki is such a great musician and song writer I hope she does something else perhaps in the future its never too late.
This single is twenty years old today. Released 30.12.1991. Now I feel old.

She looked in his eyes to lose herself
And when it falls apart, she cries
Doesn't think to look inside
She just covers up her eyes
Doesn't see her own disguise
And though she feels this sorrow
It will fade tomorrow
She'll pretend that this was really love (What do you mean?)

man, i remember being sort of obsessed with lush, esp. phillip ;p and so wanting 2 understand the lyrics back 15 yrs ago.
anyway...enjoy part of the lyrics 2many characters 2 post...
Pretty little girl, she shines-Knowing she is young, she smiles-Happy just to be a prize-Happy just to see his smile-Silly little girl, she tries-Thinking she is good and wise-Doesn't recognise the lies-Pouring from her lips, she sighs-"This is so real-It's what I feel-I look in your eyes-and lose myself".....

i was in 9th grade and my indie girlfriend turned me on to lush, and much more...
but, with this song as the songtrack to my transcendant coming of age, it was a truly glorious time. thanks.

Time goes by so fast... I remember this on MTV thinking this was the most incredible band. And they were.

Whoah - give me some band names!

RIP Chris Acland.
