watching this movie can give the viewer a heartfelt look into the korean soul. the premise of the movie is that in order to reach the "correct" soulful/soulfelt notes, the singer has to experience tremendous suffering, hardship, regret, and sorrow (all expressed by the korean term "haan"). this may explain why all films in korea have to have at least one tearjerker scene (no exaggeration even if it's a slapstick comedy!).
(The President's Barber."(2004) I took a korean film class and this had a crazy tear jerker. Was a comedy type of thing but it really twisted its plot at a certain point. this movie was great too. This was the last movie I saw in the class. A great movie to conclude the class.
@AtomskOO cool, thanks for the tip, i heard of that movie from some tv show where they actually visited the real life guy that that barber character from the movie was based on (he's still around, still near the Blue House cutting hair in his shop)
Yes, not only is the song beautiful in its rendition, infused with lamentation, but it's beautiful to both watch and listen to the entire scene slowly unfold - coming closer, building up in crescendo, and all in one take. Ari-arirang Ssuri-ssurirang! Ah-ssah! This reminds me of those memorable moments during the 2002 World Cup when the Korean fans in the stadiums would burst out in an impromptu rendition of this Korean anthem. Aja aja! I ♥ Asia.
I wonder if you ever really read the lyrics of the Arirang that is so popular. It is a love song, but sings of a man leaving the woman and indeed has a strong feel of "han" in it. It's a lament.
This isn't a expression of han at all. Arirang is a love song and han is an element of this song just like sadness is an element in many love songs. Stop overemphasizing han in arirang like a noob.
This is such a wonderful song! I agree with ArtistsComplex, if you're feeling down this is a great pick me up! Especially since it starts out sort of morose and then moves into such a happy beat. ^_^

Here we go with arirang."

A memorable scene from a memorable film, with the camera not moving and thus letting the actors tell the story . Wonderful.
