@Escapethehawthorne Since your parents or guardians are responsible for you, you would have to ask them for permission. Beyond that, I know of no law that restricts 16 year olds from hiking on the AT. However, I'm not a lawyer and I don't pretend to play one on YouTube, lol. Wanting to do the whole thing in one fell swoop?
Thanks for the post man....I admire you and glad you made it back in 'one piece'. I aspire to do the AT, but at my age of 56, I may have to work it a bit at a time.
Btw, your selection for the audio was excellent! JD exemplefied everything in nature ~ sadly missed ....
@buddydog1956 Don't psych yourself out B4U know your limitations. I let an overweight hiker psych me out early on the trail saying 20 mi/day was unrealistic. He was projecting his own limitations onto me & I let him get in my head. I know a lady in her 90s who did this in 2 diff yrs with 2 guides. Evaluate your health but understand that most people about your age can do this trail in 5-6 mo. bluejeans8001 is thru-hiking this yr & I think he's in his 50s. Maybe he'll talk2U. Thanx4the comments!
@Weskanoy Hike your own hike, but hike smart. You have plenty of time to optimize you ideal hike with info from places like whiteblazeDOTnet. Some people enjoy the social aspects and devote more daily time to it than hiking--others enjoy solitude with nature and spend more time hiking and gettin'er done quickly, challenging themselves. Whatever your hike is, discover for yourself the smartest way you can do that to minimize misery and maximize enjoyment. Live the dream!
I want to walk the AT so badly! I plan on thru-hiking in 2014 when I graduate from college! THIS video is incredibly beautiful! and I don't even know you and I am sooo proud! hehe <3 congrats to you for doing this incredible journey!
@ArtisticWords I really appreciate your kind comment. It's a very emotional thing to finally get up to that sign on Katahdin. The hike through NH and ME is very strenuous, and if you don't get it done before the first week in September, you'll find the sheets of rock on the alpine trails very steep and slippery from all the rain. If you want colorful fall photos like these, you really have to work for it.
@SteelPhoto You would have 2 understand the mentality of Tinny at minibulldesign & his buddies. He made a video on 11/12/11 about how easy it is 2 fake an AT vid, the day after I got these disses from ME where he lives, then he accused me publicly that I had no credibility until I proved it was me in the pics. Shortly thereafter, he submitted video proof he's hiked about 40mi of the AT in ME, which although isn't much, at least in his mind it's more than I can prove. He really needs to grow up.
@2kargarage1 I met a philosophy student on the AT in Northern VA who's favorite line was "nice!" He said it in a unique way that seemed like he gleaned it from a comedian on TV. I met the guy again in Monson, ME (TinnyLand) at the hostel, where he said it a few more times for me, lol.
@brickthomas Thanks, Thomas. Everytime I want to come back to the trail all I have to do is click on this vid, and I'm there! Denver is perfect for this kind of scenery.
@immortalmanuk You would love to SEE that not DO that haha. The trails does it to you, so bring lots of pain meds, lol. I went from 210 down to 155 up to 165 home 30 days recouperating from injuries, then stabilized around 160-165. You need around 5000 calories a day. Dessert in town was usually 3 icecream sandwiches, a cream cheese danish and a chocolate milk to wash it all down, lol.
My son and daughter in law are hiking the AT with me in 2012. It's an unstoppable force compeling us to do it.. At 43 this will be a true test for me, but it's also a must do.
@mistatt2 Unstoppable forces seem to hiss to vapor under the influence of damaged feet, packs that are heavier than they should be and unexpected trail experiences like insects, fords and slippery steep climbs, lol. If you need some tips to better prepare yourself, just let me know.
You are cracking me up! Thanks for the info on a possible aluminum bottle for the open chimney jet stove but perhaps I should wait on your design???? I am currently researching and ramping up for a 2013 attempt at the AT. What a surprise when I looked up your YouTube channel. You have me laughing, excellent videos! So in your real life are you a rocket scientist? Researching for stove for a 2013 run at the AT myself. It has been hauntingly calling me for some time.
@bluejeans8001 I met a lady in her 90s at the end of the 100 mile wilderness in Maine who had two male escorts and did the trail in two years. I was 47. In the right boots I'm capable of doing 20+ a day, but let me tell you, my knees and feet are still feeling the effects. What you end up doing will be based on what you want out of it. The AT can be anything from a long party with lots of people or a solo sprint to test your mettle--your choice. I wish I was a rocket scientist, haha.
congrats on the journey. I liked the autumn pics the most torwards the end. Surely you saw the border patrol out there with all those state crossings ;)
@ez2curanut hehe, no. I rely on you to tell me that ; ) I suppose If i hadn't fallen sick from the bad water at the park faucet I would have missed all that color, so in my mind, the 4 week delay was well worth it.
@BrokenAeroVT ain't that the sh**s... we go thru all the trouble to make sure we filter this, and purify that, only to find out it's the park faucet that gets us in the end.
@deezynar Thanks. Glad you appriecated it. It was definitely tough. I went through 3 large bottles of ibuprofen and after 6 weeks I'm still healing from the wear.
for a fifteen minute compilation of 2179 miles of scenery that was excellent, and you took some of the most beautiful photos i've seen of the slides shows on youtube. thanks especially for not posting your pictures of camradery with other hikers and the people you met along the way like in the other slide shows; although the community is a big part of the trail and holds alot of sentimental value it's pretty irrelevant to someone just searching for photos of the trail.
@Swazooli No dragons, but I almost stepped on that 5-6 foot rattler. His body was thick as my fist. I encountered 10 bears, two within 20 feet, and a moose and her calf tromped over a camping spot I had just vacated only 60 seconds earlier. Best advice? When you hear Brontosaurus-like thrashing of brush in the Maine forest--don't moo.
I just had surgery , the pain killers do not keep up, that lifted the pain for 5 minutes of chuckleing and giggling. SAlly forth, (and briget left!)
The worst I ever did was in almost complete darkness stepped on a black cat, I realised the cat had one stripe I lifted my foot and backed off . Would have had a rather odious ending, but meese will freaight train you and bear just like to chew the fat , yours.
@Swazooli I was fortunate enough not to encounter any black cats with a white stripe, but I did see several porcupines at night. Funny how they move. Turn their butt 2 u, waddle off a few yards & stop, repeat. Almost like an invitation 2 mount them, lol.
Gawd those "meese" looked hilarious. Took two looks at me...once from the brush, then when she got to the trail...stopped..turned to gaze again...then kept going. And I thought all those Milk Duds were from a giant hiker eating trail bunny.
do you think they would let two 16 year olds walk on the trail? me and my best friend wanna hike but not sure if we can or not
