This old Sailor loved "Anchor's Aweigh" for the first 5 carriers, but when Enterprise was up, and you played the Navy Hymn, The tears started flowing. As we say, in the Navy, Bravo Zulu!!!! =Stefan=
My grandfather was a pilot on the USS Saratoga CV-3 during WWII. He was in Night Air Group 53. He flew Hellcats and Avengers at night over Iwo Jima. I'm not 100% sure but I think the actor Robert Stack was also in CVG (N) 53. You can tell the Saratoga by the stripe on its funnel, hence the nickname "Stripe Stacked Sara." After the Kamikaze attack on the Saratoga my grandfather was moved to the USS Kula Gulf. My grandfather passed away in 1989, I promised my mom that I would keep his memory alive
It's interesting that the video states that Saratoga and Lexington had different displacements. They were sister ships of the same class. Their displacement should be about the same.
@Steve17010 The Lexington and Saratoga were meant to be Battlecruisers, not Aircraft Carriers, but after the plans were changed, the Saratoga was farther along than the Lexington, thus dictating the displacement difference
Wildly rare photo at 2:22 The Yorktown is sailing in reverse! Definite bow waves and wake from opposite! Photo details indicate this was her shakedown trials. I don't think I've ever seen such a photo of any carrier.
@freiherrudet - Actually, I recall reading how the legendary Forrest Sherman sailing the USS Wasp in reverse at 10 knots in an effort to contain fire and smoke to the bow after she was hit during the Guadalcanal campaign. When asked whether doing so would damage her engines, he reportedly barked, "Hell, I'm trying to save my ship!" or something to that effect.
@DarthOrbit watch the history channel, show called battle 360, it is about the enterprise and shows you why is deserved the 20 battles stars and was named the lucky e. proud ship and brave men aboard it. enterprise vs japan!!!! for along time and it rocked them
@SteelBeWithYou because Langley and Lady Lex were sunk early in the war.. Hornet launched the Doolittle raid and fought in Midway and Santa Cruz, Enterprise and Saratoga both survived the war

Saratoga is at the bottom of bikini atoll, nuclear test 1946. Enterprise car rental is named after the USS Enterprise- a former crew member.
