I honestly never took the time to check my gold and be sure but probably yes.

If it bothers you, you get another thief in a few levels that opens for free. But his stats are borderline worst in the game.

he's like a swordsman who uses knives

In Radiant Dawn Sothe kicks ass.

In Path of Radiance.... He's sort of useless.
