Loved this when I was 14, still love it at 44. I would love for Stone temple pilots to cover this, they would nail it, especially Scott Weiland. The lyrics are perfectly tailored for him. This song has stood the test of time. When I was living life of crime, this song was alway in my brain. I obey the law now, of course.
@silviosmama very astute observation and idea. i can picture scott weiland singing it. i'm surprised more people haven't covered cheap trick songs by now.
even tho in color and heaven tonight were great albums, the band likes this album best it was the "real" cheap trick, till they got overproduced, a successful rockin band, but the record companies kinda fucked them.....
I LOVE THIS SONG!....want to know some juicy gossip about cheap trick they dare not print in the magazines.....go to "eleanor rigby nzoz1971" and read my 3 comments. regards.
@oreste1100 dont know, but i just read today that heaven tonight was the first album to use a 12 string bass...... a great band who's identity kinda got lost in record company bs..... rock on CT!!
I was on stage with a bunch of others in Knoxville Tn '79 for this tune..... got to meet the band and party with them later...... spent a couple of days doing so actually, best of times!!!
This was not actually post-punk. Nielsen recorded Ello Kiddies in 1976 which makes it actually developing alongside of the NYC and subsequent Brit punk scenes. Very interesting time.
Ahhh the memories... My fav Cheap Trick song. It's too bad most of the music in the mainstream today is allot more about selling prepackaged, over-processed, commercialized junk, and allot less about spreading beautiful Art.
Yeah, when Trick recorded this album, they had just come off some time playing in Europe. Rick Nielsen & Tom Petersson were caught up in the whole punk movement and actually wanted Cheap Trick to sound like the Sex Pistols hence the 'raw' sound to Trick's debut. Great, Great album! The urgency of the record is what strikes me most. They were so hungry, and it shows in the playing.
At the begining of this song there's a faint bell ringing in the background. The first few times I ever played this album, I would run to answer the phone, and then realize - "oh right, it's the song"!

Oh my God.
This is different from the usual Cheap Trick most stations play. This is post-punk material!
John Lydon approves.
