  • are you a modell too??? ;)

  • My watch is digital, what do I do then?

  • @TheGuyWithAWeirdName Just use sticks this method is not exact anyway just general and since you have a watch you have a idea what time it is.

  • @TheGuyWithAWeirdName draw a clock face in the dirt with the time that is provided on your digital watch or use sticks for watch hands.

  • If you are not happy with the direction of North provided by this method, simply adjust the time.

  • Another misnomer! At best, this gives you a rough idea of where true north is, with a margin of error of up to about 30 degrees (error increases the further away from solar noon time). But if this is your only method... ensure you are not using Daylight Savings Time as the extra hour increases the error.

  • she puts up a middle finger

  • Doesn't this only work between 6am and 6pm?

Think about how it works at 5am and 7pm for example.

  • I didn't quite get it. how about it is 12 hours and the sun is on top?

  • what if you dont wear a watch ?

  • @petehall347 You can use a watch

  • so tell me when its night time??

  • Seriously its a no brainer. If you are confused just reason it out. At say 6pm sun is setting due west so if your hour hand is on it then 3 oclock is due south facing straight ahead of you if the setting sun is on your right. If its 12 noon then your hour is on twelve so there is no middle point between them you are facing due south. That is why you take the middle between the hour hand and 12 oclock for south.

  • very cool

  • How do you find north when its mid day? say 1210hrs

  • lol it was 3:00 when i watched this vid!

  • It is more accurate at high noon. If you want to get really accurate you would use declination.

  • why dont you plant a stick in the ground and line the hour hand up with the shadow of the stick for a more accurate reading

  • Cool!!!!!!!

  • good wrist watches at watches-share com

  • @Looperberg

  • what if it's really really cloudy all the time?

  • just find the susuudndunsun ;0

  • what if it's midnight?

  • Excellent How-To! Rated 5*

  • Great video.. Thanks for sharing

  • hi miss, great video, but I gotta know if you're absolutely right about the southern hemisphere 'cause an expert told me that it gives you the north-south line, not the south-north line.

  • Ok that is great, but you need to let the people who are watching this video know that there is a potentially big difference in magnetic north and true north, in addition to Grid North on a map. I understand you are showing rudimentary navigation methods. It would really help people to know this method of navigation is very crude and if you don't understand dead reckoning and measures to ensure your terrain map association is correct, you might get yourself into a real predicament. 5 for effort

  • Great technique! Simple, yet not obvious.

  • Nice explanation and visual prop. Good tip if you are using a analog watch =)
