    Guthrie the best guitar player

  • Comment removed

  • Remarkable!

  • There are guitarists and then there's "The Guitarist".

  • If Robert Fripp smoked crack before a show...

  • I think I just saw jesus christ on the guitar.

  • He is a fucking amazing guitarist but not the best. There are so many guitarist that play different genres that are incredible too. I'm relieved to come across this guy because he is one the best guitarist that play fusion/jazz stuff. Neo classical virtuoso guitarists are my favorite. I also love blues guitarists. God music is just awesome, plain and simple!

  • I love Vai and Gilbert and various other inovative guitarists but boy can this guy our shred them all. With total class. Not that id be silly enough to compare him to those guitarists. But really he's amazing

  • I really like that ta ting ta ting ta ting part

    ROCK ON GUTHRIE!

  • damn, he's too good

  • jeez...he's doing sweep picking(or sweep blowing !!! ) on a saxaphone... brilliant!

  • i've been watching this several times a day recently. This really makes me want to learn how to play fusion shred.

  • it looks like the neck from his other guitar was put on that one lol

  • how can anyone not like this?

  • Jesus, I'd sell my soul for that kind of talent :[

  • hutryuyuyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyrrrrrrrtttujjjjjjj

  • 1:12 onwards is just ridiculous!

  • I like how the saxophone player keeps 'playing' during Guthrie's solo :P

  • bass player is guthrie's brother if i'm not mistaken

  • Almost as good as Chuck Norris!

  • this guy has transcended the levels of human guitar playing.

  • I hate amazing performances like this one that get distroyed because the video clip is only 2 minutes long, come on! wheres the whole thing???

  • full lenght video would be awesome come on what a tease!

  • just amazing. everytime i watch this i'm always inspired.

  • Sick! Pretty strong Oz Noy thing going on there.

  • holy shit what groove feel and definition....

  • king of guitar

  • May I lick your fingers Guthrie?

    X D

  • were can i find the whole gig??????

i just love this kind of music

  • Guthrie is so good. Anyone tell me some of his best songs?

  • good sax player also

  • ... After seeing this I went "Oh, and there I thought this was physically impossible to do on guitar."

  • I love the way that a lot of Guthrie youtube comments are starting to become like the Chuck Norris ones... brilliant.

  • Petrucci and Govan play different styles. Leave Petrucci out of this and stop comparing your favorite guitarist on other's videos unless it's somewhat musically related a not "this guy sucks. my guy (who's dick i am currently on) is better."

  • i want to be like him

  • Guitar god.

  • the two wonders of the world....guthrie govan and bananas

  • shreddung without using his pinky? my god! awesome!

  • chuck norris fears one man his name, Guthrie

  • we need LIVE DVD of THE FELLOWSHIP! PLEASE make one, It will be epic!!!!

  • govan is my new favorite :)

  • fantastic!!!!faaaaannnntttttttaaaaasssssttttiiiiiccccc!!!!!!!!!

  • ...

    *head explodes*

  • brilliant

  • damn!! electric guitar and saxophone sound so sick together!

  • Damn--I just got my amp back from the shop. That sounded totally rad--my simple but awesome sounding setup--Yamaha AX 900U integrated amp, and 2 Cerwin Vega RE30 speakers. Sounds amazing after 1.5 years with desktop speakers.

  • See on sax player-0.40-0.50. Play's Govan's applicature...:-)) Super band!!

  • wtf, he is GOD!

  • God wishes he could play like Guthrie.

  • Pffff freemasonic comment

  • pffff what a freeemasonic comment

  • pfff what an idiot comment

  • hey im sure god can play like this now that hes had shawn lane up there teaching him for 6 years

  • @royfan3035

What if Guthrie is god? XD Maybe he played the greatest solo ever known and suddenly it spawned the entire universe from out it's sheer epicness lol

I hear he teaches at BIMM? Is that true? Imagine him as you guitar tutor! Amazing! :D

  • Check out Guthries Larry Carlton vid.I think every troll on ytube is commenting there.Never seen anything like it on ytube before.Sad is an understatement.

  • Oooooooooooooh yeah !

  • is the bassist here his brother? I remember reading that he played bass in his band.

  • Yes he is. I'm 100% sure. Not that I know it, tho, but I saw his hair, and... yes. It's Guthrie's brother for sure.

  • yeah, he's seth govan.

  • Yes, that is Seth Govan.

  • who's seth govan there?

  • @Sperzel more like Sephiroth Govan.

  • Who's the sax player ? Where's the rest of this set ???

  • His name is Zak Barrett, he has a myspace, and he's AWESOME!

  • yeah i saw him live with guthrie in bath

  • Sort of Zappa like, lol.

  • cool!

  • guthries from chelmsford thats a few miles from where i live!

  • That was pretty kickass--Where can I find the full version of ths?

  • this guy blows!!!! no chops!!!! no sense of phrasing!!!!

    (j/k)

    great stuff!

  • LOL! only govan can get away with shredding chromatically like that hahah

  • buckethead can, but only without backing

  • Buckethead is sloppy some times.

  • it happens to everyone

but Buckethead's a very clean player, really

  • Go onto a buckethead page and say that. dare you lol. Your'll have people trying to beat you up with bits of KFC chicken

  • every1 is sloppy sometimes

  • every once in a while buckethead will mess up, but come on no guitarist is perfect. then again shawn lane and guthrie look pretty dang perfect. R.I.P. shawn lane.

  • buckethead is sloppy a whole lot of times. agreed

  • Bs.

  • wow :p +76 thumbs up thats awesome

  • true, but with a mask over your face it's kind of hard to see the fretboard and he hardly ever looks at the fretboard in the first place.

  • Yeah, maybe he is human after all...

  • @paraglidermx sometimes

  • @paraglidermx buckethead sucks guthries dick.

  • @paraglidermx ya but hes a great writer which makes him great

  • He's not getting away with anything.

    Jeff Beck he's not.

  • i love this comment! u know y? because i've asked myself how he can do that but i've figured out a VERY reasonable explination... the all holy Govan made an 11th comandment that permits him to do watever he wants and make it sound good. this dude ... is a must see live if ur havent seen him yet ur gotta freak cuz its not just the chromatic scales its everything he does!!!!! ugh im having a little freak out moment here sorry... anyways like the comment :P strikes close to home haha

  • I think this guy is extremely overrated. I almost fell out of my chair laughing when that ridiculous over the top chromatic run started at 1:09! I mean really, all he was doing is very fast chromatics that to my ear sounded completely unmusical and cheezy. Thousands of guys can do stuff like that. I'd like see Mr. Govan come up with something like "Europa" by Santana and play with 1/100,000 of the feeling.

  • Petrucci shreds chromatically just as well IMO

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA this makes me laugh. Guthrie doesnt even concentrate on "Shredding" and he could still shred the absolute shit outa patrucci any day of the week :D

  • @simgeej +1

  • gz on ur opinion?

  • lol

  • Music is not a competition. They are both INCREDIBLE and down right godly.

  • @Mapon123 Petrucci and DT are great but Guthrie is amazing too.

  • solid player, no complaints here!

  • Listen at 0:08 - 0.15. Hear how he is continouing Zak Barrett's end of the last line.. Only that shows how talented Guthrie is!

  • didn't even catch that 1st time around, nice observation....very cool!

  • nice catch... thats impressive man

  • Is that Guthrie's brother on bass?

  • Yes, that's Guthrie's kid bro Seth on bass. Great bass player!

  • @alexkhan2000 Any idea what his other bass is? It looks like a Spector. Do you know what he used on Erotic Cakes? I know he uses a Glockenklang Soul head.

  • @alexkhan2000 hair's a give away lol

  • ke bestia da igual lo ke toke

  • OH my fuck! this guy rocks so much....wow..."jazzing-shred....."

  • like that then look up allan holdsworth, shawn lane, brett garsed, frank gambale and greg howe!

  • Guthrie is way more fun than those guys put together. Sure they're monster players, but their music just puts me to sleep.

  • wow

  • GUTHRIE ROCKS BALLZ

  • Oh come on guys...

He is good, Vai is good too, and Petrucci is good as well. Why should you compare these people? They have different playing styles, and they can possibly do more than you can do, so just don't argue about it 'till you are as good as they are.

For the time being, just enjoy what you see/listen :)

  • I totally agree with you, Korbu, there's only one thing I'd like to add: it's not that bad to compare musicians in means of defining their stylistical\technical\etc. differences; still, talking about which of them is an absolute better is kinda pointless.

By the way, does anybody know the name of the saxophonist? He's pretty damn awesome too!

  • I totally agree with you man you got that right They all phenomenal players and can possibly do some of the most amazing and musical things lets just enjoy all the virtuosos talents and appreciate what they all bring to the table :) and no doubt Guthrie is a virtuoso.

  • amazing

  • guthrie is a god.

  • is not a god...

    is THE GOD!

  • first time i ever favor a fusion play. what a mind! inspiring improvisation

  • Is there anything this guy cannot do? I mean he can shred and play versatile fusion AND make it sound just incredible !!!!! 11/10 just too good

  • Thanks, Guthrie is the best! :)

  • Who cares about theory?

Theory doesnt make a good musician, musicianship comes from the soul

  • theory does help though man. it's just like saying shakespeare could have been shakespeare without learning how to read or write.

  • shall we just all agree that Guthrie pwns and all of us can only dream of matching his ability? :D

  • my guitar teacher was taught by this guy xD

  • Same :p

  • Guthrie Go Man!!!!

  • govan is the best!

  • i like the way the sax player is jsut shredding away at his sax while guthrie is playing :P

  • sax player is zack barrett

  • why oh why have 2 ppl given this fellow two thumbs down for stating who the sax player is? seriously, just slap yourselves in the face really hard.

  • Amazing, one small thing, notice how he dosent use his fourth finger much ?!

  • as steve vai said.: its a matter of opinion. Music is not a freakin competition. we listen to different music, and like diiferent players. you cant compare guthrie and petrucci. They are totally different. peace

  • I really love the jazz fusion rock things.

  • man, honestly....they're all really good. but guthrie govan's improvisation??? being able to imitate SO MANY guitarist? various styles?

    it's incontrovertible.

  • who's the sax player?

  • zak barrett

  • Why does everyone have wee sad arguments over this thing? You either like the vid or don't man x yikes man x

  • wow... clearly no-one knows what the fuck their talking about do they.

  • There's a lot of wrong in the comments section for this video...

  • This guy is the fucking jesus 2009!!!

He han play ANYTHING!! YOU NAME IT!

  • Comment removed

  • i play guitar and i know what to do with punani... XD

  • Probably the best comment ever

  • I think it's a club, and jeez i can't believe the ignorance nearly everyone has posted on this page... a "real" guitarist, Vai stuck in the lydian mode? All you guys need to open your eyes and appreciate what they create as MUSIC. If you don't like their music then one would say fuck off, and some would say great. It's just opinion. And how the fuck do you people think you know anything about how much theory these guys know??? No one knows except themselves. They are successful at what they do..

  • Is this a club? or guthrie and his little brothers like....room that they hold shows in? or what?

  • This a real guitarist, so stop posting those fucking noob-ish comments about Vai and Petrucci. They're overrated and you know it.

  • over rated yes incredible also yes... guthrie is an incredible motivation and source of inspiration as are most of the great fusion guitarists but vai satch and petrucci are incredible guitarists also

  • No! Vai and Petrucci are underrated. He's overrated. Your an idiot.

  • vai is overrated, petrucci is very well known, but a god like him is never enough rated. guthrie is underrated

petrucci is the best living guitarist along with holdsworth, gambale, guthrie, gilbert etc. (imo :P)

i wouldnt say vai and petrucci are underrated man.

  • Vai IS overrated. He has FTLOG (for the lov of the big man) , well.. ?

  • Why the fuck are you all voting this guy down? he's 100% right about everything except petrucci, whom I think is overrated - the rest I agree on. Then again, its all a matter of opinion :)

  • lol you big baby!

  • Vai is on the cover of every guitar magazine. how is he overrated? Guthrie knows his instrument more than anybody else iu have ever heard

  • You have a unibrow ):P (lol)

  • They're both better composers, so no. And they've both done far more for guitar than Guthrie has in terms of furthering it.

Guthrie is probably my favourite at the moment, but just no, don't be silly.

  • arguing about who knows more theory is kinda silly. There is only so much theory you need to know and pretty much any professional session guitarist knows all of it. What matters is execution and that is where guitarists differ. Vai certainly knows his stuff (you don't work with Zappa without knowing your theory) but I've never heard him really flow and play open music like Guthrie or Lane do. He seems too rigid and overuses certain modes in my opinion. Same with petrucci, too rigid.

  • That's bullshit and you know it. Don't go trying to praise Vai without any background information. Vai doesn't use theory well enough, he memorizes a pattern, then he shreds for three hours in a song with it until you get bored and throw away the album. Don't even try to go there, you need all the theory you can get or you're going to find yourself stuck in limitations of your playing. Your comment was very ignorant and try next time to not list overrated players as a way to get to your point.

  • Rofl, you utter scrub. I never said that he uses theory well. He KNOWS all the theory but fails to apply it. What the hell is your point? Are you honestly saying that you don't know the difference between knowing theory and applying theory?

And yes Vai overuses the lydian mode in like every other solo, what I meant by "too rigid" is that he stays in his comfort zone. However if you had the faintest clue about Vai's transcription work with Zappa you would know how well he understands theory.

  • have you seen that interview with vai where he describes his first audition with zappa? shit is crazy...

  • Hahaha...he asked him to play something impossible, right?

  • pretty irrelevant to post that on a guthrie video, but yer its an awesome video haha

"well i hear linda ronstadt is looking for a guitar player"

  • "well i hear linda ronstadt is looking for a guitar player"?

    Who quoted Steve Vai?

Any way; amazing vid. Guthrie never ceases to impress! :)

  • :o I could be horribly wrong, but I think that was a Zappa quotation-

Anyhow, yes - he's beyond amazing! The bastard needs to release some more albums - I've almost burnt a hole through Erotic Cakes...

  • if you knew anything about vai, you would know that in his zappa days frank would have contests every concert called stump steve. You could bring in any sheet music u wanted and vai would site read it in front of an arena.

  • Not true, If you were at the teching levle which im at all these guys have there fav lines and ways o play. Vai IS NOT stucl in any mod. And Satch certainly is not. Govan is just another shredder that iyt, The guy has done 1 album thats i mean come on

  • when talking about vai, i assume you were talking about the lydian mode?

  • mechanical....or planned....or lacking soul...right?

  • You can't say they are TOO rigid, they are just slightly more rigid than guthrie :)

  • Absolute sickness. Love it.

  • I'm gonna lock myself in a room for 10 yrs; snap it to internet zorn every full moon, and creep out into the sun light every once and awhile.

With no life and no friends: Still.....................I'd never get that good. These guys are truly freaks of nature. Can I get a couple of amens ? u kiddin: me! ! ! ! !

  • 4 years in college? Man how the hell do you guys think jazz come into existence? Not from college! I mean I know you're trying to say that it's not easy to play jazz. That's true. But leave college or academic educations out of it because lot's of people with the degree's are still NOT good players. Michael Angelo Batio has a Jazz degree (yes, no shit) and just listen to his phrasing.... get what I mean? A degree means nothing. Theory is NOT the source of music. Guthrie knows this well.

  • too true! i was also wondering what they were saying. many original jazz innovators did not have alot of formal training.

  • I'm really wonderin' what the sax player is playing at 0:40 (look at his fingers move on his sax):P

Nevertheless, Guthrie is good Guitarplayer, and fun to listen to :)

  • Sigh... I guess it's just human nature to argue about who's better than who and stuff like that. At least you guys are keeping it somewhat civil. Carry on if you must... It's all cool as long as there are no expletives and personal attacks.

  • Incredible technique but imo, it's just another one of those guitar fret jerking. Doing what they are good at which is shredding, shredding and yet more shredding! i like Guthrie's work on Erotic Cakes though and you can truly hear his appreciation of jazz/blues/fusiono and other styles and most notably Vai inspired stuff when Steve used to play with a lot of weird and interesting shit with Frank Zappa. Anyway, I think it's time for people to see the real jazz mofos like Stanley Jordan!!! King

  • i love 1:24 to 1:30, hehe. he's not even there

  • I love these bendings Guthrie plays.

  • fusion/shred supergroup?

    guthrie govan

    squarepusher

    jojo mayer

  • oh yes

  • The song is in 7/8. I like.
