Do they make any competitive tractor-trailers? (Tatra is having it bad these days. How many civilian trucks need an off roader, how many need a tractor? Market seems to be limited at the end of the day.)

@MingGuoLi, the old T813 8x8 Kolos would pull about 70 tons and off road.

The only reason Tatra is having a bad time is it is run by an American (Capt Ron) who has no idea what he's doing and a bunch of Indians who are taking EU money.

There are plenty of good markets for these products, it just needs someone with a bit of lateral thinking to drive the whole thing.

@b52jamesb52 pretty damn well. Not hard to fit it with a V hull, and the backbone frame means everything is already capable of being armored (just armor one tube, shaped already to resist mine blasts).

These things truly are good bit's of kit. Not pretty, but they do exactly what it say's on the tin. The controls aren't well laid out and the cab on the one I drove wasn't built for comfort. I used it in Bosnia in 93 - 95. It was one of a very few vehicle types that could stay up with an armoured battle group on rough ground. The nearest thing the west had to match it was the Alvis Stalwart 6X6, known by it's nickname "the Stolly" which was also a superb off-roader, though complex.

Independent suspension is matchless in terrain, but isn't it too expensive the way how Tatra makes it? There are two crown wheel - pinion sets per axle and I think they are the most expensive individual parts of the axles. In rigid axles there are just one CWP set per axle, but you could still make the final drive conventional way by only using one CWP set.

Well unfortunately they don't win the Dakar rally anymore, because several other big name manufacturer teams complained it was too long a race at 28/30 days and they could not carry enough spares to keep on top of the breakdowns.

So it was reduced to 14 days and Tatra lost the benefit of being a bit slower but much more reliable.

@ludekkZmrd, yes the budget difference is large but you need to remember that the old Paris - Dakar race was a much longer race in terms of days, sometimes 28 days. In those circumstances and with a more standard based truck Tatra would drop behind the more powerful opposition for the first 2 weeks, in the 3rd week draw level and in the 4th week move ahead - the reason - all the others had so many breakdowns and run out of spare parts, so either retired or limping home.

would love to see a durability test though thats transparent and shows the failures that do happen and whether they are easily fixed on the side of the road.., the russians have great technology so Im sure they thought long and hard on building what looks simple to everyone but is obviously not

Well the best durability test was the old format of Paris - Dakar when it was a proper 28 - 30 day marathon rally using production vehicles with minor modifications. The competition had faster trucks but with so many failures by the 3rd week they had run out of spare
