@bolloxinator I don't know how things work over there, but in my city the workers you mentioned (street cleaners, deliverymen, trash collectors) do quite well. (Over 20£/per hour by your measurement; better than most private sector workers.) What bothers me about the people in this video is their militant attitude, utter disrespect for the surrounding community, and their class envy. They should be trying to better their situations instead of whining like children.

How should they better their lot in a recession? I've been at rock bottom in the 80s when British industry was decimated, and it's not always easy to get out of a rut once you're in it. I got lucky, found a job via a friend, right place, right time and was able to claw my way back to reasonable conditions. I know plenty of people who didn't.

@bolloxinator I should probably clarify. It's Union workers that do quite well and this is a Union city. As an example, if you search for "City of Chicago is urged to get rid of 200 truck drivers who loaf", you'll see what I mean. Story ran last month. (I'm sure there are many who are paid much less.) I'm glad you were able to get out of your rut. But our system is designed to keep an underclass of people relying on the gov, with no incentives to even try to pull themselves up.

It defies all logic that anyone would choose to stay unemployed and broke when a decent wage is on offer, and if they do, they must be clinically depressed or something. God knows even a mediocre job beats unemployment hands down, but again, there aren't any jobs out there.

Who are yuppies anyway? Who are working class? Is it defined by the kind of coffee you drink, your hairdo? It doesn't seem to be well thought out. If "yuppies" are merely white collar workers, then they are by definition working class. They're exploited just as much as factory workers in smaller cities.
