At least the Impact in Major League Soccer will make up the summertime sports void, but come on, Montreal competes well against Toronto by population; even Vancouver can compete with them (They currently have 2-only one active for Montreal as of Dec. 21, 2011.) Toronto has four franchises, so why not put another franchise for Montreal? (I don't know about the NBA, but the MLB SHOULD return there!)
Coming from a fan of Boston sports, I can say that judging by the crowds when the Bruins go up north to play the Habs, that Montreal has some of the most passionate fans, so I can only imagine what losing the Expos did to them.
Just an example (of very many, believe me) of how much Expos management sucks, but doesnt get talked about very much: You cant see it in this video, but there were logos of the other teams in MLB on the outfield wall, and a good chunk of them were outdated. That might not say much to casual observers, but to me thats a message that management didnt give a shit about maintaining its ballpark or the building a winner for its fans
For those saying the Expos had no fans, I don't think we were living on the same planet between 1980-1994. At one point they were more popular than the Canadiens.
@NATSRULE11 If it wasnt for Selig and Loria having gay sex together, that so called "Team" of yours, the "Nats" wouldn't even be around. Washington is a disgrace of a team. Fuck you Selig! Fuck you Loria!
@Metsfan710 hardly they used to pack the place back in the 70's-80's-early 90's. the fans were robbed of the world series so they left. the yankees and red sox in the mid 60's fell on hard times and as little as 200-500 fans showed up but they are still around. cmon the fans and the city got robbed buy the owners and selig
Washington doesn't need a team as bad as Montreal didn't deserve to lose the Expos. It was that buffoon Selig and owner Loria that ruined the baseball experience for the proud people of Quebec. I truly wish they'd move the Nats back where they belong. At least the Expos have Vladimir Guerrero to look forward to being inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame. Carter, Dawson, Guerrero... dang, you could start a franchise with those 3 and win several pennants.
Thinking about it, I don't want Washington to go without a team either, but there's no reason Montreal can't have one too. Put the damn Milwaukee Brewers back in the American League, give the Carolinas or Portland, Oregon a team, and BING BACK THE EXPOS OF MONTREAL!

Biggest mistake MLB done in re-locating the expos to Washington. Sometime in the near future, I would not be surprise if the Expos don't come back to Montreal again - When Selig steps asides from being commish.
The Montreal Expos will NEVER die. They are far to many loyal fans both in Montreal, and around the world. The memories will always live on.
@lcpmarketinggroup In talking to my Dad today, he says the fans in Montreal didn't support their team enough, which obviously hurt revenues. We all know why a lot of Expos fans stopped going; it's not because they didn't love their team, but they saw management/ownership screwing the team time and time again. And when Loria got there, we all know what his motive was. Loria's like the bitch in Major League that just wanted to run the Indians into the ground, so that she relocate the team.

Thanks for posting this vdideo. I grew up in West Palm Beach, Florida, spring training home of the Expos and home of a Class A minor league team of the Expos.
@p74ty4 No Shit the Titans wear old Houston Oilers jerseys once in a while it would be nice for the Nationals to do the same. Or play a series in Montreal during the reg season.
I've got the Washington Nationals right next door and I don't have it in me to cheer for them. The Expos have been my favorite national league team for most of my life and I hope to one day seem them back in Montreal.
@Frandoz7 I really appreciate that, believe me. I guess my one personal consolation prize this year is having Vladimir Guerrero play for my favorite AL team, the Baltimore Orioles. And as much as I love my orange and black, the Expos are my heart. They were the one team in baseball no one ever had a reason to hate, and when they played well, everyone cheered them on. There was never an empty seat in Olympic Stadium; those of us far away were there in spirit every game.
@DontrelleRoosevelt But you know, Dontrelle, it couldn't happen, now. The downtown piece of land where the new stadium was going to be built - the very stadium that, I am CONVINCED TO THIS DAY, would have SAVED the franchise! - has been sold, and condos stand there, now. It was the only spot available downtown, and downtown, it had to be. They made us dream of that place... boy! I would've loved to watch a ball game there.
@DontrelleRoosevelt But you know, Dontrelle, it couldn't happen, now. Means a lot to me.
@Frandoz7 I'm going to keep supporting the cause and the merchandise especially. I finally got myself an old Expos home jersey and their original cap. I've had the solid blue cap for years, but it was far past due to get the original! If I get to a Nationals game, I'll be sure to wear only Expos gear. My friend that lives near DC says there are always a couple dozen fans at games in Montreal attire, which brings a smile to my face! Lids.com seems to have a nice array of hats too!
@DontrelleRoosevelt I am so damm impressed, Dontrelle. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for this. That is one way the Expos will always be ALIVE. With people like you. I love it. Oh! And I was at that last game. By myself, I just rushed to the stadium. It was heartbreaking. I saw lots of boyfriends crying in their girlfriends' arms. Nobody wanted to leave the stadium. At the end, there were still a couple of hundreds fans left, standing there, crying, and security forced us to leave.
@Frandoz7 I didn't mean "forced" us, as in "with force"... I meant, "persuaded us... gently"... "Come on. You have to go, now. Everybody leave." And, reluctantly, we did.
@Frandoz7 I had two chances to see the Expos play, both of which went sour. However, I caught every game of theirs I could, most of the time via TBS (Braves) or WGN (Cubs/White Sox) stations.
I should be happy to see Vladimir Guerrero in Orioles orange and black, but I miss him as a Montreal Expo; I believe he will enter the Hall of Fame as one, however! That will be a great day for our fans of the Expos. It's nice to see Ian Desmond playing, however, the last of the Expos future stars.
As a lifelong Reds fan, I grew up watching the Expos play my team in the NL (back when league distinctions counted for something). I feel for you folks in Montreal. It is a terrible thing to take away a city's team. I remember those Expos teams from the late '70s and early '80s. It still amazes me that they never won a championship with all of that talent (Carter, Dawson, Raines, Wallach, et al.). Great memories from a great organization that deserved a better fate.
yeah, most of the people in the business says that Expos have ancounter a series of bad luck on every 5 years periods from their beginings, Montreal is a great Baseball city and will always be, just waiting for the team to come in.
Ce jour là, j'ai couru au Stade. Dans le mètro il y a eu beaucoup de persones avec des affiches des Expos; je m'ai posée une question, Où ont étè jusqu'aujourd'hui?
wow i'm almost crying each time i watch this video i mean im only 22 but i was watching them since im 5 y/o and me and my baseball team were having formation with them back in the days,i have picture with like every players as well as autograph !!that's my team period!
Les étés sans les expos ne sont plus les meme .. Je m'ennuie des apres midi a l'exterieur avec la radio a écouté les expos ou des nombreuses partie aux Stades olympiques ...
On July 4, 1980, I went to a doubleheader Expos @ Mets. Bill Gullickson hit John Stearns (I think) with a pitch and all hell broke loose. Both benches emptied, and punches were thrown. A drunk fan leaped over the rail and ran to "defend" his Mets. Pat Zachry and another Met pitcher knocked him to the ground. I think they split the doubleheader. What a wild night!

The Jays are better than the expos. Hence why their still here and while the Expos play in DC, all their history is gone. The Nats ballpark is full of Senators history, not Expos. Montreal was granted a team and they failed. Just like in Vancouver, The only place in Canada that can support a MLB and NBA team is Toronto.
As a Boston fan, I take my team for granted too much. regardless of rivalries, politics, or money, no town, no person should ever have their team taken from them. Records and championships dont matter..its the heart and soul that an individiual invests into the sport, and montreal fans did that. Who knows? maybe someday they will have a "Cleveland Browns situation" fall on them.
Thanks for the input... All I can say is that, losing your favorite team is kinda losing a close friend or a big brother... I followed this team for so long, and watched/listened to ALL the games... From the late 90's to 2004... (I was too young in 94) I enjoyed watching many good players here. Everyone in MTL took them for granted. Sigh....
Here's the deal...After the 1994 disappointment, management needed to act to change momentum and get fans back. Any franchise would be disenchanted after that type of blow. So whay happened instaed? Fire Sale and false promises..which created apathy..which made it a "cold ticket" item for the general public, which in turn made loyal fans not want to show up in a crappy stadium knowing only 5K in attendance.
Simply put, don't blame the fans. It was lying ownership that killed them
Nice of you... I remember the Expos/Phillies games, they were so raw... I'm rooting for the Phils against the Dodgers... I remember meeting Jimmy Rollins, Placido Polanco, Jim Thome & Chase Utley in Montreal... They were really cool guys! Go PHILS!!
@sporkot Loria TRIED his hardest to retain the franchise, but Selig is an all american fat old prick, and rumours are hes trying to get rid of the jays too.
@sporkot have teh expos ever won the world series or gone to the playoffs? gosh i've never seen olympic stadium packed...good times...atleast canada has the toronto blue jays
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
so a team who landed in 2nd a few times before 2005 and was to and would have been the best team in 1994 and moved to Washington just to be the worst team in the MLB.
Actually, the real fans came out to watch the games. But you've gotta understand, the Expos were an underdog team here in MTL, overshadowed by the stupid MTL Canadiens, and other boring teams such as the MTL Alouettes (wow.) The media criticized the team when it was losing, made fun of the low attendance, etc. It seems everyone was against us, MLB, media, the MTL Canadiens fans, the sports channel (who would talk about the fuckin Canadiens FIRST in broadcasts in July before talkin bout the Spos)
you really don't understand the history of baseball in Montreal. Jackie Robinson played his first pro game here. there is a great history and respect for pro ball in canada. no disrespect
The big difference is the new stadium, if they would've built it, the team would still be here today... The olympic stadium was shit, easily the ugliest stadium in the whole MLB. Fuckin bad management from Loria and Selig's asshole personality killed this team.
Nice one. I don't play the game, but as you noticed I did favourite some videos. You on the other hand good sir, most assuredly are a WWE enthusiast. Enjoy your "Jays" logo morphed into a semi automatic handgun. You must me all the rage amongst your friends, I bet you have fake guns and swords in your room.
Il y a 2 groupes sur facebook pour le retour des Expos. Un que j'ai crée moi meme et le premier avec plus de 1500 membres :Nous souhaitons le retour des expos Mlb - We wish the return of the expos. Il y a un deuxieme groupe facebook qui a été créer avec 7000 Membres:Official Petition to bring back the Montreal Expos
what the hell do the so called peppers have anything to do with the death of the expos, if the english were such passionate fans, there woulda been much more than just 2000 people at every game... and by the way its thanks to these peppers we still have the montreal canadiens, and the montreal alouettes. so shut the f*** up.
Gentlemen, what I'm advising you to do is start a fan rally. Organize and gather together under the banner of showing your loyalty and dedication to keeping the Expos' memory alive. You need a webpage, you need a rallying cry, and most of all you need to take action and harass DC from the stands when they arrive in Toronto. Gentlemen, those of you wish to take up this cause, I welcome you to the Expos Underground. Band together and rally for justice until the cry of "FUCK DC" haunts their dreams
i remember skipping high school class to watch 1981 series vs dodgers and Rodgers giving up the home run. 1993 should have been the Expos year. Hill, walker grissom wetttland world series was ours
EXPOS are the BEST. Damn Loria, damn Selig, damn MLB for killing a wonderful franchise with many loyal fans. I wear my teams jersey and cap still... and always will. I will root for the Padres this year as they came into the league with the Expos in 1969.
When management did not resign players,it was difficult for the fans to keep going and support the franchise.(Carter,Dawson,Raines,Vladdy,Wallach,Walker,Alou, Grissom,Wetteland,Martinez,Randy Johnson,etc.etc.etc.And no peppers did not kill this franchise!
I read somewhere that Walker said some of those "core" players from that great '94 team would have taken a cut to keep that team together. Who knows really if that is true. Rick Monday, the Carter trade, the '94 strike, and now this....sad, sad, sad, sad.
Expos fans, what you all need to do is organize. You need to publicly show Selig and the world that you're pissed as hell and you're not gonna take DC shitting all over your valued memories. You need to amass the stadiums whenever the Nats are in your closest area and crowd together to give the MLB the middle finger. Show Selig and Loria that you won't let the memories of your team die & that you won't stop raising hell for them until the one day the Expos miraculously take the field again.
Just so everyone knows the REAL truth, its not even Loria...it was BUD FUKING SELIG that piece of shit who killed the team. The Expos would have been viable if a downtown stadium would have been built. Selig wanted baseball out of Montreal so he wanted to contract the Spos along with the Twins...Remember? At any rate, go figure, the best year 94 there was no world series??? Come on? Coincidence or conspiracy theory??? Considering the Jays won back to back in 92 and 93. My heart still bleeds Spos
I'm thinking conspiracy theory myself against Canada. I believe there were issues seeing Canadian based teams winning championships in the sport that is considered to be "America's favorite pasttime."
Problem is nobody went to the games. Sure I'd like another team up here in Canada but they just didn't have enough support. If they can do better than Florida with attendance, I'd totally bring the team back.
Man I can't imagine how hard this day must have been for the Expo fans. As a Blue Jay fan, I pray that the fans in this city support our team. Its like having your best buddy taken away from you.
Many people think Montreal is a bad baseball city, but it isn't. I remember being at games with 40 thousand + and the atmosphere was amazing. It's a shame they're gone.
Although I was glad Washington, DC finally received a baseball team, I hate it that it was at the expense of the Montreal Expos. I hope that the economics of Major League Baseball doesn't cause the Toronto Blue Jays to leave Canada also.
I remembered that game, paid the extra money to get RDS on cable for the last month of the season, and can tell you I balled my eyes like a baby who sees his mommy go... I haven't REALLY watched baseball since then... just can't.
I was there that night too. What a spectrum of emotions. Ultimately, a very sad night - though glad I was there. Baseball has meant nothing since that day. I was thinking of holding a candlelight vigil outside of Parc Jarry this Sunday - it will be the 40th anniversary of the first MLB game played in Montreal. Anyone interested?
Agreed. The A's departure from Philadelphia was met with no controversy according to Wikipedia (seeing as the Phils had overtaken them) and they were plain lousy in KC (the Royals wouldn't exist without 'em). Only thing that will make the A's leave Oakland is A MASSIVE EARTHQUAKE that takes out the Bay Area cities.
Same here. Live in California but to see any city lose the sport was pretty heartbreaking. Remember getting choked up watching on the 'net, seeing an era end.
Dunderhead owners turned Montreal into a development system, not a baseball team. Breed, trade, breed, trade, breed, trade. MLB should've seriously been investigated for collusion. Can't call up players for the '03 stretch because "we can't afford it". Lmao, sounds like intentional sabotage to me.
Not an Expos fan (Red Sox fan), but that sucked so much to see the Expos franchise end. The Expos may have had a small fanbase, but it was VERY loyal.
4,000 attendance. That is fucking pathetic. An absolute disgrace to professional sports. You fucking canadiens dont ever deserve a sports team and you Montreal shits dont deserve to complain at all.
hey lets not go talking bad about new jersey, the devils kick ass, im from jersey and i kinda liked the expos i was disappointed when they left for washington
Now it's Florida Marlins turn to be murdered by Loria. What team is he gonna murder next when he will sell them and take the entire staff away with him again?
The damned square-headed administration made fire sales year after year to get the fans out. To copy Liverpool soccer club fans yelling: THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT THE COACH, THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT THE FANS, MONTREAL BALL CLUB WAS IN THE WRONG HANDS
that, that putting a roof on the stadium. People want to watch baseball outdoor, not indoor. A roof that is removable during games with no rain/snow would have been good. In the late 80s when they decided to add a roof the attendance took a huge it alerady
Actually, the roof broke even during the games, because stupid patriots wouldn't listen to the original english engineer. So it has never, ever been opened.

DontrelleRoosevelt 9 months ago
@DontrelleRoosevelt But you know, Dontrelle, it couldn't happen, now. The downtown piece of land where the new stadium was going to be built - the very stadium that, I am CONVINCED TO THIS DAY, would have SAVED the franchise! - has been sold, and condos stand there, now. It was the only spot available downtown, and downtown, it had to be. They made us dream of that place... boy! I would've loved to watch a ball game there.

DontrelleRoosevelt 9 months ago
@DontrelleRoosevelt I am so damm impressed, Dontrelle. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for this. That is one way the Expos will always be ALIVE. With people like you. I love it. Oh! And I was at that last game. By myself, I just rushed to the stadium. It was heartbreaking. I saw lots of boyfriends crying in their girlfriends' arms. Nobody wanted to leave the stadium. At the end, there were still a couple of hundreds fans left, standing there, crying, and security forced us to leave.
Frandoz7 9 months ago
@Frandoz7 I didn't mean "forced" us, as in "with force"... I meant, "persuaded us... gently"... "Come on. You have to go, now. Everybody leave." And, reluctantly, we did.
Frandoz7 9 months ago
@Frandoz7 I had two chances to see the Expos play, both of which went sour. However, I caught every game of theirs I could, most of the time via TBS (Braves) or WGN (Cubs/White Sox) stations.
I should be happy to see Vladimir Guerrero in Orioles orange and black, but I miss him as a Montreal Expo; I believe he will enter the Hall of Fame as one, however! That will be a great day for our fans of the Expos. It's nice to see Ian Desmond playing, however, the last of the Expos future stars.
DontrelleRoosevelt 9 months ago

The Jays wouldnt even exist if it weren't for the Expos... Check your history.

Murph1331 2 years ago 7
Thanks for the input... All I can say is that, losing your favorite team is kinda losing a close friend or a big brother... I followed this team for so long, and watched/listened to ALL the games... From the late 90's to 2004... (I was too young in 94) I enjoyed watching many good players here. Everyone in MTL took them for granted. Sigh....

Washington transformed this franchise into a freaken sideshow......bring back my expos
alxzanki 2 years ago 8
Here's the deal...After the 1994 disappointment, management needed to act to change momentum and get fans back. Any franchise would be disenchanted after that type of blow. So whay happened instaed? Fire Sale and false promises..which created apathy..which made it a "cold ticket" item for the general public, which in turn made loyal fans not want to show up in a crappy stadium knowing only 5K in attendance.
Simply put, don't blame the fans. It was lying ownership that killed them

jet4212006 2 years ago
Actually, the real fans came out to watch the games. But you've gotta understand, the Expos were an underdog team here in MTL, overshadowed by the stupid MTL Canadiens, and other boring teams such as the MTL Alouettes (wow.) The media criticized the team when it was losing, made fun of the low attendance, etc. It seems everyone was against us, MLB, media, the MTL Canadiens fans, the sports channel (who would talk about the fuckin Canadiens FIRST in broadcasts in July before talkin bout the Spos)

what the hell do the so called peppers have anything to do with the death of the expos, if the english were such passionate fans, there woulda been much more than just 2000 people at every game... and by the way its thanks to these peppers we still have the montreal canadiens, and the montreal alouettes. so shut the f*** up.

If they loyal fans the stadium would have been filled and they would still be in Montreal.

When management did not resign players,it was difficult for the fans to keep going and support the franchise.(Carter,Dawson,Raines,Vladdy,Wallach,Walker,Alou, Grissom,Wetteland,Martinez,Randy Johnson,etc.etc.etc.And no peppers did not kill this franchise!
gggalways 2 years ago

InnocentDarkside 2 years ago 2
God I miss the Expos!
habsmaniacnation 2 years ago 5

Although I was glad Washington, DC finally received a baseball team, I hate it that it was at the expense of the Montreal Expos. I hope that the economics of Major League Baseball doesn't cause the Toronto Blue Jays to leave Canada also.

I was there that night too. What a spectrum of emotions. Ultimately, a very sad night - though glad I was there. Baseball has meant nothing since that day.

Lmao, sounds like intentional sabotage to me.

that, that putting a roof on the stadium.
