@Novelwit2000 your logic is piss poor. A team or skater doesnt have to be the best ever to win a gold medal, they just have to be the best at that competition. You only have to beat the skaters in the same event, not the other champions in history. Let me guess you are one of those dumb American crybabies that think the overrated Carruthers who were lucky to get silver would have been more deserving Olympic Champions, LOL!
Did they do the side by side triple toes at the beginning or were those doubles? The video is a little blurry so I can't tell. I know they had planned the triples and had done them at the 83 worlds and at the 84 worlds (the ones at the 84 worlds were beautiful and perfect). That hand down on her axl later in the program is a pretty major error. They have very strong pair skating skills (unison, speed and flow), but I don't know. That error can't be ignored. The Carruthers were very good.
Pros/Cons--Carruthers executed their throw jumps better. They also had a triple twist lift whereas V/V only did a double(and sort of a weak one). V/V had harder singles jumps but they made a major error on the axls (she also grazed her foot on the throw Sal). You have to deduct there. I would say the lifts are roughly equal. People say that V/V had better overall skating skills, but being able to skate cleanly under Olympic pressure is its own special quality. Its very close.
@indiatree Those were triples. Her step out on SBS 2A wasn't considered a major error because there were only a few pairs even attempting them. The Curruthers (and Martini/Underhill) didn't really have any substantive SBS moves, which was their weakness.
Beautiful triple toeloops, and uncredible comment of Dick Button - DOUBLE toeloops!

I'm sorry, but there's NO WAY this performance deserved the gold medal. NOTHING and I mean NOT A THING here stood out as good or BEST EVER!!!
I mean, if you count her two footing one landing and stumbling her way out of another? Then, THAT'S what I was paying attention to.
Also, the music was just plain TERRIBLE. And all those musical edits!!! Talk about confusing and over the top!!!
This has to be WORSE gold medal winning performance ever!!!
What were the judges thinking???

In terms of technical content, they did try harder jumps, but they are very lyrical so I guess overall my vote would go to them

Oh absolutely. They were very well matched and the interpretation of their choices of music was superb.
