    Once I met an idiot who said he thought Matthew Broderick looked too young. He was older than Shaw was when he died at Fort Wagner.

  • This movie and the soundtrack too, are way under rated.

  • The first attack was led by a white regiment; their attack failed, and they withdrew. The second attempt was led by the Mass. 54th Regiment. They made it up the fort, but evetnually retreated, sustaining 60% casualties; after the two failed attempts, they decided to dig trenches so they could make their way up to Fort Wagner. They did so under constant fire. Once they finally reached the fort, the Union forces attacked. But stormed the fort without resistance. The Confederates had retreated.

  • Col. Shaw was my cousin through both his mother's and father's families and my mother's and father's families. Watched this movie again recently, first time since I was nineteen. Very powerful stuff. Nice too see all the positive responses.

  • After the assault at Fort Wagner, Col. Robert Gould Shaw was buried by rebels in a mass grave his fallen black soldiers. When news came to Shaw's parents how he was buried the reply was they were proud to have their son buried in that manner.

  • When Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclomation, and the 54th was set up, it finally did become a slave's war. They stated from the history of the 54th that if a black man was found among Northern whites, he would be put back to slavery; if he was wearing the blue uniform, he would be put to death. Many whites may not have been fighting for the slaves, but many free blacks sure were. That makes it a slave war.

  • @1WTED That is correct. They even mention it in the movie. Interestingly enough, we never hear any Confederates talk in that film; every racist comment is spoken by Northerners. That said, even the most racist of the union soldiers is nowhere near as murderous as the Confederate congress was. It was the Confederate congress which had the "put black soldiers to death" policy.

  • The Civil War was started because of many issues, more importantly the right to own slaves, the defense of the South's lands (because the Industrial Revolution was just starting and factories and railroads were spreading into owner's lands), and the economic blow the South would take if slavery were taken away. The South felt it was being intruded upon, and thought that Lincoln would try to abolish slavery if elected. So when he was, they seceded because they feared he would ruin their economy.

  • I think the scene where he is on his horse overlooking the ocean and KNOWS that he is going to die, that survivng the battle is impossible, is unbelievably powerful. Just incredible bravery.

  • Matthew Broderick's finest hour. And some idiot said 'He's far too young to be a Colonel' - so I pointed out that Mr Broderick was OLDER than Robert Gould Shaw, when he died, when he made this film. Horner deserved an Oscar for this.

  • When we watched this in history class, half the people there were complaining about how the ending wasn't happy and "what a stupid fairy tale it was". No, I don't make that up. It's difficult to believe I called those people peers at the time.

  • "Give 'em hell, 54th!" - One of the most powerful lines in this movie. It's been over a decade since I watched this movie...yet, I can't forget it.

  • Orsen Wells once told Sergio Leone "Don't make a movie about the American Civil War, they're box office death". Well, we all know the result of the third in the Dollars Trilogy. Kim Newman, British film critic, wrote in his western film critique; the name of which escapes me now, "........James Horner's annoying score......" to this film. It's great to know men of "achievement" can get it sooooooo wrong. When I saw this at the cinema, it was the only time I have sat to the end of the credits.

  • btw.. the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was reactivated on November 21, 2008.. i saw them in a ceremony.. what a beautiful site it was.. to see the soldiers and the flag waving :)

  • I saw this movie in my history class, and i have to say....it was one of the most heart wrenchingly, yet depressingly amazing films i have seen in a LOOOOOOONG time. The music is incredible and i just got goose bumps.....And i agree. slavery is stupid. Thank god things are a lot better now. (though not entirely, im aware it still goes on today... :'() but still.... :D

  • @suidgymoose There is nothing stupid about slavery, it's actually pretty economically sound. It's cruel and an offense to civilized values but there's little stupidity about it.

  • When my father was very young, there were still some Civil War veterans alive. My dad remembers seeing them around town, the horror of that war in their faces. It took a long time for the USAs Civil War scars to heal, maybe all the way thru WWII.

  • i cannot watch the end of this movie. even when the theme music plays at the start i tear up. it is the most dramatic movie without being forced or fake that I have ever seen. the only movie about humanity that makes me cry. a beautifully made masterpiece.

  • Orson Wells said to Sergio Leone " Don't make a film about the Civil War, they're box office death". I went to see this in 89/90, the screen was sparsely populated. However, the light at the end of the tunnel was the commissionaire waiting to see everyone out said " I watch this film everytime right through to the end, it's stunning." At a rough guess, I think he was about 19. My mate and I sat till the last note died away at the end of the credits. Then I went out and bought the soundtrack.

  • The closing titles, which show the monument of the Colonel and his men marching, is so beautiful; you really get the impression that they are moving. In fact, one of the soldiers actually resembles Denzel Washington.

The whole states rights issue is one of the biggest lies out there. States rights was code word for slavery. They wanted to breakaway to have slaves (the South). By the way I was born and raised in Virginia. The Union Army were the true brave hero's the Confederacy were immoral traitor cowards.

This is written in the declaration of independence, actually the SOUTH had the right to do what they did.

  • @thomas44329 You are also correct, the North did not care about slavery or slaves (they had some slaves up North) The North just wanted to save the union, I think there was a verse some where from Abraham Lincoln saying that in so many words at one time he cared more about saving the union than the slaves.

The north had slaves, MARY LINCOLN owned slaves, and when the emancipation proclamation was signed, the desertion rates in the federal armies rose to extraordinarily high levels afterward. The common white man of the north refused to fight a war to free slaves and that's a fact. And just to prove it wasn't the reason for the war, Robert E. Lee once said that he wished we would have freed the slaves then declared war on the north.

  • @MrThumper187 It was about slavery, which was about profit. The south would never have seceded if slave labor were not being encroached upon. The propaganda was (and is) that it was about states rights but the primary right the Southern politicians wanted to defend was slavery. It was sold to the common southerner (who owned no slaves) that it was about the north trying to force its will on the south, in order to get him to enlist. "Rich man's war, poor man's fight." Btw, I'm from Alabama.

  • The thing about this movie that made me cry in the end was how savage we can be with one another and what a waste war is. 22 years after the release of this movie (and it's in my top 5 of all time) I still get tears in my eyes when I watch it.

  • My history class is watching this right now. We are on the part the 54th Massachuesstes are on their first battle. Colonel was trying convince the general to move his position to offense. This is a very exciting movie.

  • Its why our military ceremonial colors are blue gold and not red and gray. Thank GOD for President Lincoln, thank God for the Union and thank God for the couragous men of the northern states. Treason is a cowards act, full blown rebellion is witchcraft.

  • At first Broderick was very strict and he was sad went the sergent went to beat the thomas and was his best friend i was so angry that time until i saw that broderick willing to sarcrifice his life.He sarcrifice him self so that the 54 massachutes would be like very angry and so that they can work up as a team to win the place..i was so sad for the broderick as i watch it 3 or 4 times...

  • Whenever I would watch this movie I would always stop it right before the assault on the fort. So in my mind I was like" Nobody died and they won the war and everyone lived happily ever after...The End"

  • @xanos4225 ...If it were only true that way. But the thing with that is, this movie would not mean anything. Battle is a terrible, terrible thing, but it is well and truly a honor and wonder to live and fight with men who are all willing to sacrifice their lives for their friends and for a set of higher ideals. If that sacrifice were not necessary, the bond we have would not exist as is does and did then.

  • It was actually the 54th's casualties that eventually took the fort, the rebels abandonded it after they buried the 54th too close to their well... the men were getting sick and had to abandon. This wasn't the only reason but I thought that it was noteworthy :)
