I'm fairly new to this group. this is the most subdued perfomance I have seen from them...it's quite beautiful. Music - such a wonderful medium - don't need to understand a word of this to know ...god I love the Finnish!!!!!
@13Kioshi Yes the refrain is in Russian. As I understand it is really a quite common feature in the Karelian folk songs to have Russian loans - naturally in the music itself but also in the lyrics. I suppose the listeners were expected to have enough knowledge of Russian to understand.
Baltic-Finns (Finns, Karelians (Ingerians), Vepsians, Isorians, Votians, Estonians, Livonians) are not related to Russians. Baltic-Finns have been living on Baltic shores at least 5000 years. Russians may have taken some traditions from Chuds (like they call Baltic-Finns) during the last 1000 years, when they expanded from Kiyev (Ukraine) up to north. Russian presence on the eastern part of Baltic Sea has become permanent only during the last 300 years.
@SolntsaSvet omg I love the nordo-finno-balto-slavic-barbaric... I think only this word is enough to let ppl stop fighting... I think there's nothing better than learning from each other!!!! love that word!! ;)
@SolntsaSvet Actually Russians are result of assimilation of Nordic-Slavic-Finnish people. So Russian language, music and culture have lot of common Finnish, Swedes and other Slavs..
Are they only doing Russian stuff translated into Finnish? I only read the combine traditional lyrics with modern music (or maybe the other way round). Would be a pity, because FInland has enough beautiful traditional of its own.
Värttinä comes from Carelia, and parts of Russia was the old Carelia, and we belong to Russia in the history too. So though this is Russian song, these songs are part of Finland's history also.
Beside the marvellous hairdo and the fairylike blue, the song is soothing and lovely even though I don't understand a word, I love it, save for the lyrics I have a friend that would most probably translate the song for me.. Congratulation you've gifted us with another amazing song
@IshadaKatzteilov IMHO Meri (on Ilmatar) must be the most original of Värttinä pieces. Perhaps I don't 'get around' enough, but it actually is the most original piece of music - by anyone - I have ever listened to. There is (almost) no rhythm, no melody and the lyrics frequently 'fail' to rhyme - still there is developing structure and feel of deep desperate sorrow - and it is just so b e a u t i f u l. Lead singer is Sirpa Reiman, what a wonderful interpretation.
so beautiful!

Russian music and Finnish music have a lot in common. Russians themselves (especially from the NW) have a lot in common with the Finns.
In that corner of Europe we are all brother nordo-finno-balto-slavic barbaric peoples :P

Ha, I at least noticed it's not Finnish. And the music doesn't sound Finnish, either. Typically Russian.
