The Grassroots hit Live For Today is a copy of the (2nd) Drifters I Count The Tears, same music-different lyrics. Talking bout th Drifters-the original Drifters led by the badd azz Clyde McPhatter recorded the first twist song, Whatcha Gonna Do years before Hank Ballard and then Chubby Checker via the dirtbag Dick Clarl. The twist was a popular dance among black people in the 50s before the term rock n roll was created by Alan freed
I'm lovin' this tune. I haven't heard it in years. I work with a lot of Doo Wop groups that come through Pittsburgh. But I'd love a chance to work with these 'cats' too!!
@AllBobsAllTheTime One Tube historian gave THEOLA KILGORE credit fo (THE LOVE OF MY MAN). It was changed but the same song as (THE LOVE OF MY GOD). maybe by REV JAMES CLEVELAND. 1st Blue Eyed Soul Sister (TIMI YURO) had (THE LOVE OF A BOY). Same song rewritten enough to be a New Song! CHUBBY CHECKER didn't change THE TWIST. HANK said it fooled him! Never fooled me for one second.
Los Angeles is so very under rated and overlooked with it comes to vocal harmony groups, very little doo wop-thank goodness and tons of soulful group harmony. I also consider Los Angeles to be the cradle of what was later on called rock and roll. After WW2, most of the pioneers were in So Cal, Louis Jordan, T-Bone Walker, the Liggins brothers, Amos Milburn, Johnny Otis etc etc
@Patequi The Donays (a girl group) were from LA, too. They sang the original "Devil In His Heart" (later covered as "Devil In Her Heart" by the Beatles). I just read that the Coasters too were originally from LA, though they relocated to NYC to be near Atlantic Records.
The Coasters were made up from the break up of another great L A vocal harmony group, the Robins which included Richard "Louie-Louie" Berry. The lead singer Carl Gardner died just a few weeks ago
@Patequi Hey, thanks for the info. I saw the Coasters once (maybe twice) in oldies shows in the mid 90s. And yes I did see the recent obit on Mr. Gardner and also on Jerry Lieber, who co-wrote many Coasters hits. I've heard of the Robins but did not know the Robins/Coasters connection or the Richard Berry part. Thanks again.
You are not fooled. Note for note this is Hank Ballards song with the words changed. The Record Company for The Vibrations were taken to court. Some type of settlement was reached. I like The Vibrations--Marathons-- Jay Hawks much better!!! Not long ago I got to meet Carl Fisher of the group.Very nice man. He said the Temps copyed all their steps. The Temptation walk was The Vibration walk. Lov the Vibrations Thanks
Still have the 45RPM

Don't get this song mixed up with "The Wah-Watusi" by the Orlons (1962), which is also a great song.
