G1: 'Worthy Competitor' for iPhone

ha this ended up being a total failure. what a worthy competitor. All these companies are trying to copy Apple's iPhone, and none of them understand the customer base that makes the iPhone so popular. The iPhone is ultimate in design, in function, and the user created apps are what really make it roll. Apple's no questions asked warranty return is icing on the cake. 25% of AT&T users have the iPhone, how could you not have one if you had AT&T. Dominance for the nest two years+

"mainly" is a misleading term..there are tons of iphone apps out there...and android although its more open source, is still not up to par with the iphone, and Im not a mac fanboy..

Actually Apple don't make any of the apps - they're all made using a freely available SDK and IDE that comes with any Mac OS X operating system for free - that's what's beautiful about it and a huge part of its success...

GOD!!!!!!!! if htc and google put a little more effort in the making of this it would be the best phone of all time. the inner workings are great but the phone its self sucks. ive had mine for about 3 weeks and i happy but i could be happier..but im hoping the g2 will be perfect.

i would say the iphone is probably better for media purposes but that is it, the G1 is much better for the fact i has apps that actually do stuff, as opposed to little games that keep you entertained for 30 seconds. right now i would have to say that android is the greatest mobile OS, but im still hoping palm comes back with something big, its been a while since theyve done anything really

I think the G1 is a very cool phone and T-Mobile was lucky to get it. Sprint has the Instinct, Verizon has the Blackberry Storm, At&t has the Iphone, and now T-Mobile has the G1. I don't think the G1 was made to be a rival of the Iphone. A rival phone would be a Windows or Yahoo phone that has things that the Iphone doesn't have. But I'm putting my Blackberry Curve up and getting a G1 tomorrow

The iPhone is lighter compared to the G1. It only weighs as much as 133g while the rival is 158g.

iPhone can last up to 300 hours (standby) whereas the G1 only lasts for 130 hours. Again, one point goes to the iPhone.

What do you mean by "use [providers]"? It has chat clients for each of those, and you can also get your e-mail with those providers via POP3/IMAP4.

You create applications using JavaScript. It does have bluetooth support, but not STEREO bluetooth.

Let's think...First, there were the palm pilots, and then the Pocket PCs, all of the blackberries, the phones on the palm platform, a ton of Windows Mobile phones, and then the inferior iPhone came in with all its shiney glory, and only had any kind of significant functionality with their second version. I choose the G1 over the I phone because I dont agree with the cost of an I phone for what its capable of as well as T-mobile has more reasonable plans than AT&T. the prospect of Typing messages on the screen itself is pointless! Thats like a millionaire going out and buying a 80,000 luxury car when he could have just bought a Hynda genesis with the same creature comforts.

whatever you "cant do" will be developed that is the beauty of an open source os. Already there have been many many apps. developed and the phone hasent even been released. It has the capability of doing everything you said you could not do.And it will. Trust me you will be saying this phone is the best smartphone by the end of next year

No to be offensive but for someone that comments regulary on technology for a publication as prestigious as the WSG, youre not very versed with the technology you are speaking about. The G1 does not have exchange support nor does it have push for other IMAPs or POP accounts but thats doesnt mean you can sync your outlook with GMail. There are numerous apps that will sync your outlook with Gmail and your outlook calendar with GCal.... and theyre free.... how bout using this new thing ....the net.
