Either the Portuguese or English versions sound way better than the French one wich was supposed to be the "real one" - sometimes the voice actors just nail it in other languages. My favourite is really the portuguese (portugal i think) one - it really shows the lust
Infernale, bacchanale. L'Enfer noirçit ma chair, Du pêché, de désir, Le Ciel doit me punir.
I've listened to many versions of this song, and my conclusion is that the french and german versions are the bests :P Both of them have the most appropriate words and sounds to translate all the emotions and different sides of Frollo.

@ballhog145 I find it twistedly funny that the French version, which is the RIGHT language is actualy honestly sub par compared to the english version.
@yleisjakkaralemmikki "I confess to almighty God, the blessed eternal virgin Mary, the blessed archangel Michael, the holy apostles, the saints, and to You, Father because I sinned all too much by thinking, by word and deed. It's my fault, my heaviest fault. Lord have mercy."
I think that's what they say. If my Latin is wrong, someone can feel free to correct me.
I know this is something that's already been said, but I still think that if Tony Jay had sung this song it would be the best Disney song. The lyrics are arguably more terrifying.
@BailliveDeCaen It's you XD I clearly remember I was scared by him when I was a child (as I'm french, I saw it like that when I was around 6) and since I think he is quite terrifying... (If I had masichist tendences, well...)
For those of you who do not know, bacchanal is referred to as Bacchanalia. The bacchanalia were wild and mystic festivals of the Greco-Roman god Bacchus (or Dionysus), the wine god. The term has since come to describe any form of drunken revelry. Know you know, and Knowing is half the battle, G.I. JOE!!!!
Y'know, he calls her a "fleur du mal". Strange, considering that that particular book (by Charles Baudelaire) was written after the original novel "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". Still, it's Disney, i guess... anyway, this really is an excellent dramatic song, especially when you compare it to heaven's light, which is a sweet, calm song.
@commander672 That an interesting point actually, I often think back upon that question myself. The HoND is made by Disney, an American, and the original movie dub is english... but the story if french, the setting, the people and all is french. This makes you wonder if the french have a better understanding of the movie then the creators of the movie themselves. I have to say I prefer this version more, mainly because the french dub was the one I first saw way back in the theaters in Paris.

@AnomalyINC maybe because she actually conducted a Wtiche's Sabbath in her castle, with minions and all. The only other place where that's happened was in Fantasia, but it had more impact in Sleeping Beauty. ^^
It's jst that the majority of fans I have encountered have been weeaboo-yaoi-fangirls of the extreme variety.
You know, the kind that cannot go a minute without using "words" such as "kawaii", "smexy", and various other forms of brutally butchered Japanese. (Or Nippon, as they insist on calling it.)
@AnomalyINC XD nippon... If they knew so much as basic Japanese they'd know it's Nihingo... I tend to go all "kawaiii!!!" but just when I see real cute stuffs... not Riku and Sora kissing each... X.x
@akissy It is mixed with plenty of self-hat too. I used to be a japanophile myself, only a few years ago.
Whenever I think about it I just want to hit myself until the stupid goes away.
I don't hate Japan or anything, I am rather neutral towards it.
But whenever I see maleficent, I remember the fangirls. And I remember how I was. I can't even watch'Japanese cartoons anymore, and that is a pity, as I really like Neon Genesis Evangelion.
@AnomalyINC it's alright, it'll blow over and you'll get to enjoy it again. We all went through the stupid fangirl fase, and we grew out of it and started enjoying anime and manga as we should. ^^ So don't be so hard on yourself and realize that those fangirls are just wrong in the head, and you're not.^^ You can enjoy it, you' seem o down to earth that it won't hurt you being fangirlish once in awhile. ^^
@Leydeen An old man using his station of power to kill supposed "inferior" people as well as force the ultimatum "fire or me" upon a young woman he has the hots for?
@AnomalyINC he's not evil really. yes he does horrendous deeds but that doesn't make him evil, he thinks what he is doing is for god and therefore he believes that what he is doing is good. When he start lusting after Esmeralda he uses his religious beliefs to justify that ultimatum.of me or fire and while the justification is done out of lust yes but also guilt for his sexual desire for her.
@spawn10317 Doing evil makes you evil. You don't have to realize you are evil to be evil. He considers his fellow human beings to be scum, worthy of death simply by existing. He is a rotten, filthy, evil excuse of a human being.
@AnomalyINC Be sure, once evil is done to someone who never did evil, - he'll just start doing evil, cause 'that's how this world works'. Example? Someone kills his relatives and stealins his property.
@1492irina He is not that evil in the book. He keep Quasimodo because he has mercy for him, and protect him. He really believes in what he did but Esmeralda breaks everything in what he believed. He want to stay in the order but can't stop thinking of Esmeralda. By the way, she is not burned alive but hanged in the book. And Quasimodo kill Frodo and then die on Esmeralda corpse.
@Samsayshilol A man of the clergy can't be too harsh in the French psyche. It's adapted to cultural differences. They're very puritan to us. So i guess that's why he's more "theatral" (with stronger lytics indeed though, much stronger...) instead of angrier here.
@AuxaneD Puritan as in Anti Catholic? As in clergy are so poorly perceived there a preist cannot be percieved as too harsh? Or do you mean the complete opposite and are saying clergymen are so hihghly regarded they can't be seen as evil no matter what? I'm sorry I can't distinguish based on your comment.
@MikaeleBaker Yeah i realised i didn't express myself well. No as in prude, reserved, anti-violence...They're not highly regarded at all. We're a very secular country.
Indeed, the French voice is less powerful than the English voice...but, all the darkness of the song is in the lyrics...if you understood French, I'm not sure that you would say the same that you're saying right now..
@Tobbs96 "Minister Frollo, the gypsy has escaped." "First, I'm going to burn Paris to find her. Then I'm going to burn her if she won't have me. Then I'm going to burn you for interrupting my musical soliloquoy."
Well maybe french sounds beautiful and romantic to your ears but trust me (I'm french), when you understand the words of this song, it's so powerful and absolutely disgusting, full of lust and frustration... It's really not a song for children cartoon...
I watched this thinking it would sound amazing, but the voice actor isn't really that good. Tony Jay really takes the cake on being a great voice actor.
When I heard the german version I got goosebumps, but this one SERIOUSLY sent shivers down my spine, such powerful words, perfectly display all the lust and frustration Frollo felt... now time to watch Anastasia in russian 8D ...
@criedwhenSnapedied I totally agree! They should have left Gringoire in, too. Especially since he wouldn't need to be changed from top to bottom to make a good hero character...unlike certain captains...
"-Maitre Frollo, 63 personnes n'apprecient pas votre chanson en version francaise.
-Je les trouverais, je les trouverais meme si je dois bruler tout le YouTube!"
the lyrics don't exactly match the ones in the English version, but very good nonetheless. very good indeed. les doubleurs ont su garder la chanson captivante.

But Frollo is not supposed to be evil.
Leydeen 2 weeks ago
@Leydeen An old man using his station of power to kill supposed "inferior" people as well as force the ultimatum "fire or me" upon a young woman he has the hots for?
Frollo is evil, no doubt about it.
AnomalyINC 2 weeks ago
@AnomalyINC he's not evil really. yes he does horrendous deeds but that doesn't make him evil, he thinks what he is doing is for god and therefore he believes that what he is doing is good. When he start lusting after Esmeralda he uses his religious beliefs to justify that ultimatum.of me or fire and while the justification is done out of lust yes but also guilt for his sexual desire for her.
spawn10317 2 weeks ago
@spawn10317 Doing evil makes you evil. You don't have to realize you are evil to be evil. He considers his fellow human beings to be scum, worthy of death simply by existing. He is a rotten, filthy, evil excuse of a human being.
And that is why he make such a good villain.
AnomalyINC 2 weeks ago
@AnomalyINC Be sure, once evil is done to someone who never did evil, - he'll just start doing evil, cause 'that's how this world works'. Example? Someone kills his relatives and stealins his property.
mizukami999 2 weeks ago
@Leydeen what are you talking about? Frollo IS the villain of the movie, he's insane!
1492irina 2 weeks ago
@1492irina
Leydeen 2 weeks ago
@1492irina He is not that evil in the book. He keep Quasimodo because he has mercy for him, and protect him. He really believes in what he did but Esmeralda breaks everything in what he believed. He want to stay in the order but can't stop thinking of Esmeralda. By the way, she is not burned alive but hanged in the book. And Quasimodo kill Frodo and then die on Esmeralda corpse.

Could someone please translate this into English for me? I would love to know why it's not a good song for kids.
MsKrishtina 7 months ago
@MsKrishtina Just search Hellfire English. Disney songs all have metalanguage translations.
Dieg061603 7 months ago
@Dieg061603 But if I search for Hellfire English, won't I just get the original English lyrics? I wanted an English translation of the French lyrics.
MsKrishtina 7 months ago
@MsKrishtina Well.. It's kinda the same song. So translation would be very close to the source.
Dieg061603 7 months ago
@MsKrishtina "Infernales Bacchanales" can translate to "Infernal Orgies". That's one reason.
timeparadox888 7 months ago 3
@timeparadox888 Interesting! :)
MsKrishtina 7 months ago
Frollo is too weak here, the lyrics sound darker though.
Samsayshilol 7 months ago 4
@Samsayshilol A man of the clergy can't be too harsh in the French psyche. It's adapted to cultural differences. They're very puritan to us. So i guess that's why he's more "theatral" (with stronger lytics indeed though, much stronger...) instead of angrier here.
AuxaneD 7 months ago
@AuxaneD Puritan as in Anti Catholic? As in clergy are so poorly perceived there a preist cannot be percieved as too harsh? Or do you mean the complete opposite and are saying clergymen are so hihghly regarded they can't be seen as evil no matter what? I'm sorry I can't distinguish based on your comment.
MikaeleBaker 7 months ago
@MikaeleBaker Yeah i realised i didn't express myself well. No as in prude, reserved, anti-violence...They're not highly regarded at all. We're a very secular country.
AuxaneD 7 months ago
Indeed, the French voice is less powerful than the English voice...but, all the darkness of the song is in the lyrics...if you understood French, I'm not sure that you would say the same that you're saying right now..

Well maybe french sounds beautiful and romantic to your ears but trust me (I'm french), when you understand the words of this song, it's so powerful and absolutely disgusting, full of lust and frustration... It's really not a song for children cartoon...
greghousedaughter 7 months ago 5
@greghousedaughter Well I for one will always regret learning German in school instead of French. I have never had any use of German whatsoever.

I watched this thinking it would sound amazing, but the voice actor isn't really that good. Tony Jay really takes the cake on being a great voice actor.

if Tony Jay was able to sing this in french, this song, without a doubt, would be the most EPIC villan song in disney history

When I heard the german version I got goosebumps, but this one SERIOUSLY sent shivers down my spine, such powerful words, perfectly display all the lust and frustration Frollo felt... now time to watch Anastasia in russian 8D ...

They should have left Jehan Frollo in the movie. He would have added such a comical part.
*while holding a fire extingiser in case Claude's sleeves catch on fire* "Hey, big brother, STOP SINGING TO THE FIREPLACE!!!! IT'S NOT HEALTHY!!"
This is not actually in the book.
criedwhenSnapedied 8 months ago 2
@criedwhenSnapedied I totally agree! They should have left Gringoire in, too. Especially since he wouldn't need to be changed from top to bottom to make a good hero character...unlike certain captains...

"-Maitre Frollo, 63 personnes n'apprecient pas votre chanson en version francaise.
-Je les trouverais, je les trouverais meme si je dois bruler tout le YouTube!"
the lyrics don't exactly match the ones in the English version, but very good nonetheless. very good indeed. les doubleurs ont su garder la chanson captivante.

Since the story IS set in France I shouldn't have expected anything else.
Frollo's voice is just an ehh...Lacks conviction.
