  • a bit sped up :|

  • @roizvirtual Not at all sped up. I've seen this live three times - she's just that skilled.

  • is this sped up? she can't be THAT good.. so much precision... incredible.. how can her body hit all those notes at that speed??

  • @siutiah Lots of practice. Hours and hours of it. (And no, it's not sped up.)

  • @ghking31 your comment was cool, but looked like crap.

  • veryveryvery sooooooooo COOOOOOOOOOL !!!!!

  • very magical intuistic

  • que raro video!! pero muy bueno!! muy interesante

  • The best dancer I ever saw do this particular dance would be, in my opinion, Kadek Dewi Aryani from Junjungan, Ubud.

  • @faezan Dewi Aryani is an extremely talented dancer i have only seen in videos but what i have seen she is extremely impressive! I Wayan Dibia speaks very highly of her! 'She's wild!' Haha!

  • revising for GCSE music and i can listen to the music because that lady just reminds me of nicki minaj

  • She sparkled at like 1:59! :D

  • "countless arabesques" Claude Debussy

  • what intruments are those?

  • @carjacker800 i wanna say Kulintang, Gangsa, Gong Gedé, Kendang and probaley more stuff i cant see. also these are variations of these instruments as each Gamelan makes their own instruments and have different names for them. i have no idea what Cudamani would call these in particular plus the naming is also based on the notes the instruments play and that i also have no idea. its the best complete art though!

  • where can I get a CD of this?

  • @pettrucciisgod They do have a CD out from their Odalan Bali tour - it's simply called "Odalan Bali". You should be able to get it from CD Baby and other sites.

  • love it -

  • The most culturally intense video i have watched in such a long time! MARVELOUS!!! FREGIN BRAVO!!!

  • awesome...

  • now rethinking major minor and harmonic/diatonic.......

  • This gamelon will send techno back to fred flinstone....amazing cultural intensity and amazing percussion

  • Wonderful! It's one of my favorite Youtube videos... Today I opened my account and frankly couldn't wait to congratulate and thank you for uploading. ¿May a colombian cellist fall in love with indonesian culture? Now I've become a great admirer of gamelan!

I see the reason why Antonin Artaud wrote about gamelan dancers and musicians as models for the contemporary theatrical performers, who should express a brutal modificacion of themselves as if they were being consumed by a terrible fever!

  • the movements are so interesting.....

  • lmao anyone see the girls eyes around 7:05 ?

  • omg that's some crazy ass dancing. it's almost like shes popping!!!

  • Bagus sekali ! Terima kasih banyak !

  • The Barong is a benevolent protector, they bring blessings to the village and members of the community. The Barong mask is not simply an aesthetic master piece. The Barong connects us to the spirit world.... and this gives comfort to everyone... so in the temple ceremony, Barong is honored with offerings and prayer.

  • hello i love this type of dance

may i ask why the dancer is praying to the bargong in the beginning of the dance?

    i am just curous

    zoe

  • you can really see the influence ancient india has on indonesia. this dancing is very similar to bharatanatyam. even the drums used here are very typically indian, having two heads.

I really like this a lot.

  • probably came along with the religion

  • wow. simply amazing

  • I saw it in ubud, nicenice :D

  • I love her facial expressions. The eyes are intriguing

  • i thought this dance is called kebyar gandrung. is kebyar gandrung just taruna jaya from ubud? tolong.

  • Yes, this is known as both Taruna Gandrung and Kebyar Gandrung. This was retooled by Pak Gandra (alm) from the original dance from North Bali called "Wiranjaya" (?)

  • awesome video when you watch it with some psy tunes

  • Amazing.

  • Mbo Jero, Apa kabar? bagus sekali!!!! ;)

  • つか、バリの音楽って、テクノポップとかブレークダンスとか、ロボットダンスとかの元祖じゃねえの、と思う。マイケルジャクソンもバリ系のダンスをパクったのかもよw

  • I think a hip hop artist could sell some of those dance moves =)

    Love this music.

  • aku nak tanye.. sapi sapa punye..?

    emangnya indon punye..

sbb lu punye emak ngentot ngan sapi.. kerna bapak lu x ada kontol..

maka keluar la anak-anak sapi di indon

    goblok macam sapi..

  • ya iyalah indonesia punya. emang malingshit punya? yang kalian punya tuch cuman cewek2 bertampang khinzir. kebudayaan? jelas nggak punya. fucking idiotic malaysian .

  • much better than what you'll ever have in that wartorn fucking bosnia.

  • I always associate DnB with the Indian Tabla.

  • Half of my family is in the vid from my moms side. At .16 thats my uncle

  • cool! i play gamelan @ my school, its kinda fun :)

  • Yes, the modern drum and bass movement has some connections to this music, it's true. But, the dynamics that are created here don't exist in the monotonous beats of D and B. This is organic music created by human hands, not a computer. Comparing the genius of this music to drum and bass is like comparing a home cooked 4 course meal to fast food.

  • Not all DnB is monotonous.

  • Yes, it is.

  • @Lintart

maybe i wouldn't go that far....these two types of music are from completely different musical cultures and serve different purposes. true, modern balinese gamelan does have a lot of varying "dynamics" which are for dramatic effect (especially with the dance!)...western dance music such as dnb on the other hand has strong latin and african roots which include strong reinforcement of the pulse through repetition.....i love both gamelan and dnb too btw =)

  • this is one of the many things i miss about living in indonesia

  • Dewa! YAY!!!

  • I think this band is opening for OOIOO on aug 6 at Shibuya-O

  • you can see her eyes...wonderfull...

  • the sound of gamelan always reminds me of the mystery and beauty of the universe(s), worlds beyond ours, and infinity. not so much being in love. but i'm an ignorant and misguided westerner, so whatever. P:

  • she's got Betty Davis eyes.

  • Some of the rhythms in this are almost like Drum and Bass...

  • You noticed too? These rhythms and styles are way older than dnb etc, I'm sure a lot of these electronic djs / artists have a great deal of exposure to all forms of rhythm from all over the world, which they are inspired by / influenced by for sure. :)

  • "Thet took the stone from here, Dr Jones"

  • I LOVE GAMELON!! I get to play this at school :]

  • Only one in the world Unique culture from Indonesia....

  • Did that very first poster actually say "learn to play"??? Someone needs to check their hearing aids!

What a stellar performance!! Balinese rocks!

  • Learn. It helps.

  • I love this music!

  • i had to whach this for homework lol

  • exquisite playing.

  • this is pretty fucking kickass

  • amazing!

  • Ooo nice! you should watch out for a new doc that should come out in 2009 called Bali - Sacred and Secret - I believe there's a website with that name

  • fabulous!!!

  • woooow perfect.

  • salut dan bangga + 2 jempol untuk kalian. jp swiss

  • I think what sets this apart from the original Taruna Jaya is the kebyar section - it's a study of both united melodic brilliance and silence.

  • Superbe dancer, and talented musicians (though the extra hand/body gestures were at times a bit overdone, a bit cheesy, to my taste esp the beginning part, these used to be cool but now evrybody's doing them evrytime). I also think the dancer's flirting part w drummer is not very fitting.

I still prefer the orginal version of Terunajaya, however one wants to name it, but as a performance, it is awesome!!

  • "I also think the dancer's flirting part w drummer is not very fitting"

Well, there is a reason why this is called Taruna *Gandrung*... And don't forget that the original Taruna Jaya also has the flirting pengipuk section - it's just that most groups leave it out nowadays - a shame, really.

  • What part that you think is not fitting ? why ? be more specific....

This piece is originally called Wiranjaya, but when Bapak I Wayan Gandra taught us (Cudamani) this piece on 2001, he named it "kebyar gandrung".

  • Which part is not fitting? in terms of what (melody, togetherness, or what?) why?

    be more specific.....

This piece is originally called Wiranjaya (from north Bali/Buleleng). When Pak Gandra taught this piece to Cudamani on 2001, he named it "Kebyar Gandrung".

  • Well lets remember this is a staged show

  • huh? what's a non staged show?

  • a duck

  • :DD

  • Their Eyes are so big.

  • I studied with Emiko and Dewa through APPEX in 2004 and it was a life-changing experience! Love to Cudamani and all Cudamani fans!!!

  • funny u put this on....i am related to cudamani....my grandmother is from there...and i started playing gamelan when i was 4 there....and half of the people there are in my family...lol

  • Cool. Cudamani gave a great performance here in Seattle. Your family is amazing!

  • AAAh wow thats cool, I am learning balinese gamelan myself not related to any players though! Whats the story behind this piece!?

  • "Taruna Gandrung" is the name of the piece. It means "young man in love."

  • Also, it's the long-lost alter ego (if one can call a music piece that) of the ubiquitous Taruna Jaya, a dance piece of a similar nature that was developed around 1915. Plenty of videos of that piece here on Youtube.

  • @UWWS is the javanese and the balinese gamelan the same thing?

  • @mightyafrowhitey Nope - completely different styles. And you have to consider that each island/region has several different ensemble types. There are over twenty different ensemble types in Bali alone.

  • @mightyafrowhitey No they are not. Just type on your You Tube Search: Javanese Gamelan, listen to it, then after that search again for :Balinese Gamelan, listen to it, there you will see and hear the diffirence between the two. Or if you want to compare more search for :Sundanese Gamelan, from West Java.

  • hii do u have the barong part for this performence??

if u do can please put it up.

    btw this is pu263092.

  • Excellente! Superlative performance. I watched Cudamani twice in Wilshire Blv theater LA and UCLA.

  • Dear G-d(s)! It has been a while since I have seen dance with such precision! Brilliant - absolutely brilliant. Thank you for this experience.

  • They're one of the most amazing experiences live, and so unbelievably virtuosic and engaging. Although this is a really cool video, experiencing them live will leave you slack-jawed and giddy for days. An absolutely precious cultural phenomenon. Thank you for posting Cudamani! I hope you post more!! -Ken

  • Great performance!!! Kalo ngak salah ini group gambelan yang keliling di U.S (annapolis dan sempet mampir di washington)... Selamet tour...Sukses!!

  • Ya, bener. Grup ini barangkali ke UC Davis, California sekarang.

  • THIS IS ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR!

  • YES!!!! We look forward to welcoming Cudamani to my hometown of Annapolis. Travel well and safe,
