@faezan Dewi Aryani is an extremely talented dancer i have only seen in videos but what i have seen she is extremely impressive! I Wayan Dibia speaks very highly of her! 'She's wild!' Haha!
@carjacker800 i wanna say Kulintang, Gangsa, Gong Gedé, Kendang and probaley more stuff i cant see. also these are variations of these instruments as each Gamelan makes their own instruments and have different names for them. i have no idea what Cudamani would call these in particular plus the naming is also based on the notes the instruments play and that i also have no idea. its the best complete art though!
@pettrucciisgod They do have a CD out from their Odalan Bali tour - it's simply called "Odalan Bali". You should be able to get it from CD Baby and other sites.
Wonderful! It's one of my favorite Youtube videos... Today I opened my account and frankly couldn't wait to congratulate and thank you for uploading. ¿May a colombian cellist fall in love with indonesian culture? Now I've become a great admirer of gamelan!
I see the reason why Antonin Artaud wrote about gamelan dancers and musicians as models for the contemporary theatrical performers, who should express a brutal modificacion of themselves as if they were being consumed by a terrible fever!
The Barong is a benevolent protector, they bring blessings to the village and members of the community. The Barong mask is not simply an aesthetic master piece. The Barong connects us to the spirit world.... and this gives comfort to everyone... so in the temple ceremony, Barong is honored with offerings and prayer.
you can really see the influence ancient india has on indonesia. this dancing is very similar to bharatanatyam. even the drums used here are very typically indian, having two heads.
Yes, this is known as both Taruna Gandrung and Kebyar Gandrung. This was retooled by Pak Gandra (alm) from the original dance from North Bali called "Wiranjaya" (?)
Yes, the modern drum and bass movement has some connections to this music, it's true. But, the dynamics that are created here don't exist in the monotonous beats of D and B. This is organic music created by human hands, not a computer. Comparing the genius of this music to drum and bass is like comparing a home cooked 4 course meal to fast food.
maybe i wouldn't go that far....these two types of music are from completely different musical cultures and serve different purposes. true, modern balinese gamelan does have a lot of varying "dynamics" which are for dramatic effect (especially with the dance!)...western dance music such as dnb on the other hand has strong latin and african roots which include strong reinforcement of the pulse through repetition.....i love both gamelan and dnb too btw =)
the sound of gamelan always reminds me of the mystery and beauty of the universe(s), worlds beyond ours, and infinity. not so much being in love. but i'm an ignorant and misguided westerner, so whatever. P:
You noticed too? These rhythms and styles are way older than dnb etc, I'm sure a lot of these electronic djs / artists have a great deal of exposure to all forms of rhythm from all over the world, which they are inspired by / influenced by for sure. :)
Ooo nice! you should watch out for a new doc that should come out in 2009 called Bali - Sacred and Secret - I believe there's a website with that name
Superbe dancer, and talented musicians (though the extra hand/body gestures were at times a bit overdone, a bit cheesy, to my taste esp the beginning part, these used to be cool but now evrybody's doing them evrytime). I also think the dancer's flirting part w drummer is not very fitting.
I still prefer the orginal version of Terunajaya, however one wants to name it, but as a performance, it is awesome!!
"I also think the dancer's flirting part w drummer is not very fitting"
Well, there is a reason why this is called Taruna *Gandrung*... And don't forget that the original Taruna Jaya also has the flirting pengipuk section - it's just that most groups leave it out nowadays - a shame, really.

If gandrung translates to being crazy in love then, since the story tells about a young adolescent male (a teruna not a pemuda), the part would not even be appropriate. The flirting part actually alrdy existed in Kebyar Duduk/Trompong as seen in an old film of Kebyar Trompong dated 1976. The old audio recording of Terunajaya from Sayan (North Bali) also didnt include it. Since the North style (where Terunajaya originated) is more 'keras', it is posible that the flirting part was added later.
Which part is not fitting? in terms of what (melody, togetherness, or what?) why?
be more specific.....
This piece is originally called Wiranjaya (from north Bali/Buleleng). When Pak Gandra taught this piece to Cudamani on 2001, he named it "Kebyar Gandrung".
funny u put this on....i am related to cudamani....my grandmother is from there...and i started playing gamelan when i was 4 there....and half of the people there are in my family...lol
Also, it's the long-lost alter ego (if one can call a music piece that) of the ubiquitous Taruna Jaya, a dance piece of a similar nature that was developed around 1915. Plenty of videos of that piece here on Youtube.
@mightyafrowhitey Nope - completely different styles. And you have to consider that each island/region has several different ensemble types. There are over twenty different ensemble types in Bali alone.
@mightyafrowhitey No they are not.
