@nwoodworth1390 It was to improve grazing underneath, as the trees have grown in the area they have reduced light to the grass underneath and Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) is not a very good tree in the UK. The leaves are thick preventing light penetration and they do not support a lot of wildlife either. It is supposed to be parkland style planting but it needed thinning to keep the grazing. I should add more trees were planted in other areas too mainly Ash and Oak.
dont get me wrong, chainsaws are faster than axes, but you dont get the satisfaction that you get when you fell a tree with an axe. i love axes, and the sound they make when chopping a tree. plus they give you more excercise and they dont pollute. however, a chainsaw works better for dividing the tree up after its down. or you could go one better and get a lumber saw.
@3xAmigosProductions I do recommend this axe, had no problems with it so far, well made and strong, keeps a deadly edge, swings nicely, not to heavy. I would only get this if you are planning on chopping a few good sized trees down as it's a bit big to be carrying around while camping.
and the reason for cutting down a living tree was?

Set that back wedge a few inches lower next time and it'll come down easier... let the tree do the work! Nice job though!
