I love the way Mattei physicalizes this section... Figaro can just taste the gold and Peter relishes the music... especially at 2:45, like he just can't wait to party. So expressive and hella sexy! This Figaro is one wild and crazy guy - but the charm is that it comes across as believable and real. A brilliant accomplishment!
Joyce DiDonato and JD Florez will be in LA to do Il barbiere this Fall. The only thing missing will be Peter Mattei. Too bad, because you'll have to put up with the beautiful beautiful Nathan Gunn instead :)
haha to anyone listening i'll pay for a tivo'd copy or whatever format that i can watch it in..the only version the Met has out in DVD is one taped in 1988 w/ Kathleen Battle + Leo Nucci
Is this out in DVD yet? Is it comming out? Where did this video come from? I saw it at the movies, and I hope it's comming out on DVD, anybody know??? Thanks poster!!
Keep checking the Metropolitan Opera's website. They have released a few of last seasons performances on DVD so hopefully they'll release this one soon!
I regret that no plans have been announced at this time to release this production on DVD. However, this production was aired on PBS and stations occasionally re-air our broadcasts. You may want to contact your local PBS station to see if they have any plans to broadcast this production
NOOOOOOO! Well, thank you for informing us. But I just thought of something. Doesn't PBS often offer their programs on DVD? And if not, can't we get somebody "cough cough LUINDRIEL" to Tivo the WHOLE thing, and then upload it?
Ok it's embarrassing to admit, but when i listened to peter mattei's recording of swedish songs (stenhammar) i started crying. It's one of the most beautiful performances i've ever heard.
This is from the MET in New York. Mattei dominated these performances in 2006 in spite of the presence of Florez and Damrau. Quite incredible in fact! He's totally unbelieavable. Having said that ,don't forget to check out Florez and Damrau...
I just don't get tired of this! I love how the stage wraps around the orchestra. I love when the door opens & we see the girl-on-girl action, and then they suddenly realize the doors are open! And I love how Figaro's expression is like, "Isn't this the life?" when he sees them. I love how they end at exactly the same moment. Thanks again for posting this!
Mattei is always awesome. The first time I saw Mattei was at the Met a few seasons ago as Don Giovanni. I had never seen anyone so commanding or powerful of the stage, and I have seen many to rival. No one will ever truly be Don Giovanni for me again. With him charming, who needs a Prince? I have loved him ever since.
You can make your own DVD if you happened to TIVO it or if you know someone who did... sadly that's not me... I'm stuck with my old-fashioned VHS version!
Oh how I wish the Met would put this whole production out on a dvd. I understand they are repeating it in the 2007/2008 season. It sold out completely, not just at Lincoln Center, but in the HD presentations as well. I LOVED it!!!!!
i was at Barbiere in March and there were cameras everywhere. to me it looked like they were taping for a DVD!!!!! it may or may not be true, but it certainly got me excited! =)
If you were at this particular performance 3/24/07, it was being HD'd that day. I was there sitting right in front of on the rear orchestra cameras. The HD audience has an advantage over the live one; during intermission(s) there are always backstage interviews and you can see what's happening on the set. It also costs a fraction of the ticket price at the Met! I taped my copy off-air when PBS aired it.
TERRIBLE AND MIC'D.

Has this been released on dvd or blu-ray? I have watched it a million times on Metplayer, but I really hate sitting at the computer listening to it.

Peter is the best. As Don Giovanni, he is incomparable. He is extremely talented. He commands the stage whenever he is on it.
