ATSF 3460 was built as part of a 1937 order. Its experimental streamlining did not take for several reasons. The added weight of the streamlining limited the 4-6-4 locomotive's performance and made for a rough ride.
With the debut of the Super Chief in 1939, ATSF began to dieselize. WWII slowed the process, but the fate of streamlined steam was sealed on ATSF. The Blue Goose survived until 1956, but its F and E unit replacements were stunning in their own right, splendid in warbonnet paint.
Nice concept idea, looks kinda like the CB&Q's Aelous (preserved de-streamlined) and the NYC's Commodore Vanderbilt (1st streamlined steamer) put together. I'd really like to see that in action!
@SouthwesternSteam Oh yes, I designed it with those two in mind. The idea being, that it would look good next to the Milwaukee Road Hiawatha, and the CB&Q Pioneer Zephyrs. I need to find a strong mechanism to build the shell onto first....
@boonpole84 No - I'd love to have one of those, but its the N&W Class J Northern. Bachmann Spectrum made it, but it doesn't like corners, and the pilot has a very low profile.
@Whizzer1 Thanks! The video on all my rolling stock is still to come, I've filmed it, I just haven't uploaded it. The engines shown here are just my steam ones.
The Dreyfuss Hudson is my favorite streamlined locomotive too.
