Up to 10 - 12 ft. they'd give an even softer bark but keep their eyes in the gators direction just above the gunwales. anything larger and they would try to become one with the floor of the canoe and shake with fear. Time to leave the area!

This definitely broke my heart. Not only did I have to watch my dog be put to sleep, but I've always had a fear of my cat being eaten by like a snake or something. I UNDERSTAND that animals hunt and eat to survive, but that doesn't mean we can't grieve. And how can we excuse the actions of one creature by saying it's in their nature, but we can't say the same about humans? Isn't everything we do in our nature? Yes, we kill more than we need, but that's OUR nature, is it not?
The truth is, humans are just as much a part of nature as anything else. Sure we don't always make great decisions, but nature took its course and here we are. Nothing can really change that. We do what we do because that's what we know and what we've learned, just like any other animal.

It's not the animal's fault, but certain species of animals become especially dangerous if they learn to be hostile to, or comfortable around, humans. This is the case with bears and even elephants.

Leash laws and pet laws are the norm there but in most of the country pet owners allow their pets to run free and enjoy their existence instead of constantly being tethered to a leash or locked in an apartment all day. Dogs love to run and explore and swim. In most areas outside of cities they are allowed to do what they love.
Ok, I am an alligator owner, and I am also a dog owner. Bottom line - if you live near a big body of water inhabited by ANY species of crocodilian, keep your dogs, cats, KIDS, and perhaps YOURSELF OUT OF THE WATER! These are large, powerful, carnivorous animals that will ambush kill whatever they deem fit. I don't feel the gator should have been killed, but relocation would have been a good choice.
@ashcan6 Great advice! One of the best posts i've read so far, It does not say why or how they killed the gator, simply that they killed it. Had they relocated it, where would it go? I have heard the gator population is pretty strong down there and rather territorial.
I'm not for indiscriminate killing but at the same time, the story does not go into detail about why or how it was killed. Which I think would have been much more newsworthy than the garbage report we see here.

This definitely broke my heart. Not only did I have to watch my dog be put to sleep, but I've always had a fear of my cat being eaten by like a snake or something. I UNDERSTAND that animals hunt and eat to survive, but that doesn't mean we can't grieve. And how can we excuse the actions of one creature by saying it's in their nature, but we can't say the same about humans? Isn't everything we do in our nature? Yes, we kill more than we need, but that's OUR nature, is it not?

The truth is, humans are just as much a part of nature as anything else. Sure we don't always make great decisions, but nature took its course and here we are. Nothing can really change that. We do what we do because that's what we know and what we've learned, just like any other animal.

@skiddlerlover225 I think the issue is just that this particular alligator had learned to approach humans' homes, looking for food. It's not the animal's fault, but certain species of animals become especially dangerous if they learn to be hostile to, or comfortable around, humans. This is the case with bears and even elephants.

@PwnFlash Hahahaha, you must live in a city somewhere. Leash laws and pet laws are the norm there but in most of the country pet owners allow their pets to run free and enjoy their existence instead of constantly being tethered to a leash or locked in an apartment all day. Dogs love to run and explore and swim. In most areas outside of cities they are allowed to do what they love.
Now tell me who the "good" pet owners are.

Ok, I am an alligator owner, and I am also a dog owner. Bottom line - if you live near a big body of water inhabited by ANY species of crocodilian, keep your dogs, cats, KIDS, and perhaps YOURSELF OUT OF THE WATER! These are large, powerful, carnivorous animals that will ambush kill whatever they deem fit. I don't feel the gator should have been killed, but relocation would have been a good choice.

@ashcan6 Great advice! One of the best posts i've read so far, It does not say why or how they killed the gator, simply that they killed it. Had they relocated it, where would it go? I have heard the gator population is pretty strong down there and rather territorial.
I'm not for indiscriminate killing but at the same time, the story does not go into detail about why or how it was killed. Which I think would have been much more newsworthy than the garbage report we see here.

Yeah the alligator killed the dog, which is sad, but that alligator was simply hunting for food.
They had the lligator captured so why couldn't they move it somewhere else and release it far away from the area. There was no need to kill it.

Whether it killed a cat, dog, or any other kind of pet, it should not have been killed for it.
Human beings just can't accept that they are a part of nature, and nature is brutal, that alligator was simply looking for food.
We, humans, slaughter millions of animals each year for own own consumption and don't think anything of it, but people will bitch and moan about something like this case with the dog - the gator isn't evil at all and should not be killed, just moved to a different place

It's still sad! I still feel bad for the family who owned that dog.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a meat-eater myself. But an alligator that big if it could get a dog like that, it could snatch a human. And a lot of the time, alligators find their way back to their original hunting grounds. So, relocation isn't always a great idea.

@Keith6720 Well humans are the keepers of the world and while we must be good stewards of this earth, we don't have to subject people to living next to wild and dangerous animals. They could have easily moved it and i'm not sure why they didn't as the short clip didn't expand on that.
And had the dog eaten a baby gator that belonged to someone, the dog owner would have been in some sort of legal trouble.
