@abubenzeer Because if it was an English movie, we'd probably have a bunch of punks who think they are masters of the art. This movie is straight from the country of origins, as it should be.
@FearThisChannel yes but mind you donnie yen's original style wasnt wing chun and he didnt learn it for long.. its not as authentic as you think. but he is good.
I knew someday someone would make an epic martial arts film that actually matters. Those kung fu films in the past had those great fight scenes, but very few had a great story to tell without being cheesy. Films like these makes people really want to learn Wing Chun and take it seriously. Not to show you're tough and beat the shit out of people, that's kinda a given and what attracts you to it in the first place, just to calm and defend yourself when needed after you've learned it for years.
To all those who have to wear diapers when they think of being "In The Lineage"; Ip Man himself would tell you its about the Kung Fu, the excellence gained through hard work that matters, not who taught who what. If you approach Wing Chun openly, and study under someone who has mastered the skills and is skilled at teaching you can go through the sky. It is YOUR diamond-intent to master Kung Fu that matters most!
The main problem with Ving Tsun, is that it had so many successors... Ving Tsun, Wing Tsun (W.T.), Ving Tsun (V.T.), Wing Tzun, Wing Chung, Wing Shun, Wing Tsung, Wyng Tjun, Ving Chun (VC) and so on, each a little bit different, and every grandmaster claims that his style is "the true wing chun", which came from yip man when he was at his best... and everybody is right and everybody is wrong.
@TheGeekySkeptic There is no two instructors that teach the same, no matter what style of martial art it is. This is really the beauty of an art form. What fun would it be to get trained to become a robot? William Cheung sees the forms as Karate Kata. I would have to agree that it works for him, based on the number of street fights he won when he was young.
On the one hand of course, you are correct. Of course every one teaches it a little bit differently. However, I think we can also agree that Karate is very different from Ving Tzun, and that Shaolin Kung fu is very different from capoeira.
The main problem I see in respect to Ving Tzun is the so called "Descendant dispute", as it's sometimes called. Mainly, that the different schools vary quite a lot in their style. Not the teachers IN each school. It's kind of hard to choose.
@TheGeekySkeptic - I agree the descendant disputes are a problem.

If you approach Wing Chun openly, and study under someone who has mastered the skills and is skilled at teaching you can go through the sky. It is YOUR diamond-intent to master Kung Fu that matters most!
"Ip Man himself would tell you its about the Kung Fu"
Exactly, and yet his own students are hacking each other to pieces over who teaches the "real Yip Man Ving Tzun". Now if this isn't a heavy dose of irony...
This movie is amazing! I watched it online and I can't wait to see it on the big screen. It has all the quality of an epic WWII drama "Schindler's List" style, plus incredible Kung-Fu action. Donnie is a great actor and this is the role of his life. I hope the West embraces this movie. It deserves to be among the best, not just of action movies, but of ALL movies.
Haha! I hope not! My fingers are crossed that REading Cinemas will do the right/smart thing like they did with infernal Affairs, Kung Fu Hustle, SPL, Flashpoint etc. All great movies that I saw on their big screens. Support your local cinema!
Anyone know anything about international release dates for this movie? I'm lving in Australia and I'm desperate to see this, everything I've read about it says its one of the best martial arts films since Crouching Tiger.
i watched 3 times already.i really like this movie.sammo hung as the action director is the excellent choice.i had learn wing chun just for 1 year its really exciting.bravo to the whole team who make ip man as a successful movie.
Seen a few trailers for this movie and they've not really sold it to me, but this shows off more and makes it look a lot more worth watching, now I'm excited to see it too :)
Hands down my favourite movie of all time. Donnie Yen is suuuch a badass. Also, Sammo Hung = legendary action director.
