@MrCrazyh81 I grew up with the death penalty- it was never applied indiscriminately. A lot depended on how expensive a lawyer you could hire, and most of them pleaded insanity to wriggle out of being executed. Trouble is- what if they're hanged, and later found to be innocent, like Colin Ross? What if they're hanged, and more bodies are discovered which looks like their work- but you can no longer question them? Solution? Make jail as harsh and horrible as is humanly possible, for life.

I don't know how it is in austrailia, but in the US, executing someone costs more than locking them up untill they die of old age. It takes so long that that's how most death row inmates die, too.
