I actually find it upsetting that so many have reduced the memory of so many heroes to nationalist bs - I'm British and I hate it when Americans claim all the glory for WWII (and WWI for that matter but that's another issue) but I know that grit, ingenuity and downright stubbornness couldn't have beat the Nazis without arms, manpower and logistical support from ALL the Allied countries, especially the USA.

The British empire were fighting a global war at the time with the French and Spanish empires as well as local conflicts with the "League of neutrality." The loss of the 13 colonies was considered small in comparison to india or the W. Indies. Also the Reb's used irregular militia that used hit and run attacks and couldn't/wouldn't fight the regular army. How can you tell a reb from a patriot in civillian clothing? You can't.

In my own opinion they may of been able to do it but the loss on their side would of been so great and they realised that. That's why Hitler never really gave it 100 % with us.

Oh well, this question will always be there as we can't go back and test our theories...

As for the present though....

USA & UK & Australia & Canada are all cousins and will/should remain allies until the end.

Sorry but no. England had won its sovereignty without significant US help by September 1940 and Russia could never be conquered by the German Wehrmacht due to its poor forward planning and Hitler's rigidity.

Evan Raeder the German navy commander said it would be inpossible to invade Britain amphibiously. also a RAF pilot invented the radar during the war and every RAF aircraft had 1, unlike the germans. so Hitler threatend Britain with sea invasion hoping like hell that the British would surrender. The united states decided to take Canada from England. That was the basis of the war of 1812. You lost and signed the treaty of Gaint which ended the war. Kind of like Korea, Vietnam, Iraq...

The War of 1812 was started by the US invasion of Canada and despite the loss of the battle of New Orleans in January 1815 the British suceeded in their war aims of keeping Canada under British control and burnt down Washington DC to add insult to injury. Not a defeat by any stretch of the imagination.... Also in the revolution didn't the British army win almost ALL the engagements on land... save for Saratoga and Yorktown. What of Bunker hill? Germantown? Philedelphia?

With regard to the American War Of Independance, it can be argued that there are definite parallels betweeb the AW of I & the US experience in Vietnam. The British won nearly all the major engagements in the War Of Independance, just as the US won the main engagements in Nam. Like the US in Nam, the British failed to join their victories up into a STRATEGIC VICTORY. The Americans like to forget that they would have been defeated without the major support provided by France.

Without the production, manpower, machinery, finance, munitions and more, lots more from the USA, the British wouldn't have been in a position to break those codes. The British "Bombe", was derived from the pre-war Polish "Bombe" (bombs) machine, developed by Polish code breakers who slowly deciphered pre-war early type Enigma messages in 1933-1938

Whilst you are correct to say that the Bletchley Park team used the Polish Bombe you neglect to say that it was developed further by the British and that other machines were built to crack Enigma, one of which was "Collosus" - the world's first programable electronic computer. This was all done WITHOUT any particular input, either financially or technically, from the USA. I suggest you read Hugh Sebag-Montefiore's excellent book "Enigma - The Battle For The Code"

The US did NOT win WW2, it required a conserted TEAM effort to defeat Hitler's Germany. The Russians did far more damage to the Wehrmacht than the US army ever did. Overall, the German troops were far superior to the US infantry, who were actually (too be kind) VERY average at best.

I'm not sure it would have made a difference to the war itself. The British people had suffered a defeat at Dunkirk and would have wanted the army to fight on after all the British do dislike a Dictatorship especially one that is threatening.

The survivors who fought in France knew the capabilities of the German army. The UK would have been conquered in no time. I guess Churchill preferred to choose the toughest option.

But the Germans had to get across the Channel. The Luftwaffe's record against surface ships was not great and the Royal Navy could have sunk a chunk of an invaision force.

Britain had been taken by an invading army since 1066 and the Army would have stood its ground as long as possible. The first wave of German troops would have had a tough time of it especially with limited heavy equipment.

I think the Germans made a series of mistakes. They should have annihilated French and British troops massed in Dunkerque in the first place. They should have also tried to concentrate their efforts on taking out the Royal Navy, too...clearing the Channel from ships and sending massive air groups to cover the operation would have resulted in a successful landing, IMO.

Excellent British tacticts and not so good German ones. That's what led to the German defeat.

Yeah i think had the German army advanced and fired on the forces on the beach it would have become a blood bath... But the Panzers crews and infantry were tired and strained and needed rest, i think this would have lead to unnecessary german casualties.

When they tried to clear the channel in the early stages of the battle their losses did not outweigh their gains in ships sunk and RAF planes destroyed. The RN was withdrawn from hellfire corner out of plane range but not ship.

Sending wings of Bf-109Es and Ju-87s with Ju-88, He-111 and Do-17 support should have been enough, IMO...
