There are hair dryers with the warning label that reads "Do not operate in shower" Because someone thought they were smart enough to dry their hair AND bathe at the same time.

However, Bill Hicks has been dead for 17 years, and I think it's kind of moot for people to continue going on about it, so long after the jokes were originally stolen. People need to let it go.

And the fact that he's dead is irrelevant to the argument, if you even want to call it that. It's a matter of taste, meaning there isn't really a "right" answer here. So in that case, you'd be right about it being moot.

If all it took to destroy Bill Hicks' career was having ONE act (supposedly) stolen from a colleague, then he isn't really all that talented. If he were, it wouldn't have mattered that his material had been stolen, because he'd have had plenty of new material to take its place. Frankly I've never found the man to be amusing. I think it's sad when people get bitter about other people's success and try to destroy it, as opposed to merely trying harder to achieve their own.

Really? Number one, he stole material and recorded it as his own. Instead of creating something himself, he stole from someone else who was better. I've heard the Hicks version of jokes Leary "stole" (which is not as much as dolts like you exaggerate), and strongly felt he didn't deliver the punch as strong as Leary. And took too long GETTING to the point. Maybe the longer version isn't always better? Comedy is supposed to be quick jabs that are funny not long tirades that EVENTUALLY get a chuckle if you haven't lost the audience already.

Sure can. But did I say that? I sure didn't imply it.
Comedy isn't a set way of doing things, you know. The magic is always in the innovation... i.e. something Hicks did in many jokes and even his approach to it. Comedy might have a set, closed definition in your opinion, but as long as comedic performances have been around, there have always been different forms of innovation that have contributed to the evolution it.
