I'm with a lot of people who saw this on channel 4 years ago and never seen it since. Forgot how good it was! Hope they make a feature length film out of this as I think a lot can be done with it (if done in same fashion as this short film)!
IMO it would have been scarier if we had seen even less.
like, rather than seeing a dark man-like form that hits him in the head with a pot, just have him turn and scream, and then show a blood trail leading out the now-normal looking door and the lightbulb outside
That was some creepy-ass stuff right there. I've never been quite as scared from a "monster reveal" shot. It's up-close, slightly off-center, and instantly in-your-face, but it's still impossible to make out what it is,
For those of you who also saw this on Channel 4 a few years back, does anyone remember the animated film that was also on that night, about a little boy whose mum had died, and he had a dog and a very sad and slightly creepy dad?
Can't find it anywhere and wouldn't know how to look it up as I don't remember its name, but I'd love to see it again.
So cool! If that had happened to me I wouldn't have opened the doors, I'd have checked them from the outside, filmed it all, shown it to people... And I'd probably never sleep again hahaha...
That chest-up shot of the creature is fucking masterful. It's slightly off-center, so you don't have a familiar visual frame of reference (ie the wide-angle zombie shot, or the end-of-the-hall The Shining girls shot). And it's not just dark, but *solid black*, so it's instantly off-putting and malevolent. And it comes out of nowhere. Just...gaaaaaaaaaaah.
I too saw this years ago on the KQED shorts program. Scared me _ _ _ _- less too. It's so simple and technically straightforward, but it still works. A great all-time short for sure. The compression artifacting here is bad. The closeup of the dark figure was freaky at higher rez. You could make out the shape of a face, and for sure it was just a guy with a tight black bodysuit but it was freaky. Low budget but extremely effective. Something to be proud of for a short.
i watched this film about 7 years ago on channel four at like 3 in the morning or something, i've only ever seen it that one time and it scared the shit out of me, truly brilliant film

I wonder what he would have seen looking if he had gone outside a normal door then tried looking into his house through the french ones...

As scary as this is, it quickly becomes comical when the shadow man whacks him with a freakin' sauce pan. I mean seriously, lol.

I can so imagine what the guy is saying at 2:42
''....I am so going to sue the company for that.....''
I'am not easily scared, but that was one hell of a bumb I got, and.. I kind of felt sorry for the guy at the end =/
