  • I thought it was an excellent movie, I totally love Paul and his work, as the americans were nowhere near this battle and didnt come in until the last year of the war.

  • I just discoverded this film. I love war movies of the WW2 specialiy about american soldiers but this one is wonderful and we discoverded the courage of canadian soldiers to. Big thanks to Paul Gross for directing this and for his superb play. I put a video on my YouTube of the moment Michael find the nurse Sarah in Passchendaele. It's so beautiful in all this horror.

  • WWI, WWII, my grandfather fought in both. How exactly does a race like that make ammends for such horrors?

Personally, I would be asahmed to be be German.

  • @thm149 well that makes one of you....

  • @thm149

First off son, World War 1 was not started by Germany. The makings for WW1 could be traced to a decade earlier as tensions amongst the Great Powers came to a boiling point. Nationalism, militarism (Europe had been in an arms race for over a decade) and imperialism were major factors. In actual fact, the war "started" in the Balkans after a Serb nationalist assasinated the Austrian Crown Prince. Serbia, Austro-Hungary & Russia were competing for dominance in the Balkans.

  • @thm149

And secondly, the Allied powers are as responsible for the 2nd World War as Germany is. After placing the sole blame for WW1 on Germany, which could not be further from the truth, they subsequently placed a crippling war-repayment debt on Germany, which even by todays standards was ludicrous. Then the Great Depression struck and Germany felt it harder than any other nation. Mired in social decay, poverty and humiliation, the perfect ingredients for extremist politics were in place.

  • @thm149

During the 1919 Treaty of Versailles process, US president Woodrow Wilson pleaded with the French and to a lesser degree, the British, to relax their demands on Germany, citing his "14 Points". After the terms of peace were outlined, most of these poinst were ignored and Wilson feared peace would not last long. He was right.

Personally, I'd be ashamed to be so blinded, poorly researched and as naive as you.

  • @thestaggie Oh, honey, hardly.....nice synopsis on the history, though. But since I already have a PhD in military history I really don't need your tripe. Bye bye now....

  • @thm149

Seriously? Well, I may not have a PhD as you claim, but I do have straight A's throughout my school career in history as well as a healthy collection of books on the subject matter of the World Wars.

Anyway, I'd like to know where you got your PhD that claimed Germany was solely responsible for both wars? Anybody with the ability to research history unbiased will see that. Sounds like a PhD in bullshit to me.

  • @thm149

And another thing, the causes for the wars were not just military, there were social, political and nationalist reasons at play too. So there goes your PhD in military history giving you the complete knowledge of the causes for those wars. Or do you have a PhD in social studies and political science too? Maybe you majored in German history as well?

  • @thm149

Personally, I would be ashamed at spelling ashamed wrong.

  • I don't no why we even fought wars any how, i mean yea hittler wanted the whole world but still!!.

  • @IMSANTACLAWZ Passchendaele was an awful battle in WWI. Hitler was WWII.

  • my cousin was in this movie! he is gonna try and hook me up to be a modeller or an actor!

  • I agree with the stereotyping of all Germans as souless savages being ridiculous. Maybe SS men where like that but not regular Wehrmacht men. Alot of the German men were just fighting for their country, just like every other soldier. They had wives, kids, mothers, fathers, brothers & sisters too. They suffered as well. They need to seriously make a film from the viewpoint of the Germans. Maybe set in Stalingrad, while they were surrounded, or the final defence of Berlin. Show their human side.

  • All Quiet on the Western Front lols

  • @thestaggie they kinda did, but not exactly. they made a ww1 movie with the viewpoint of the germans. its called all quiet on the western front.

  • this movie made me cry! OMG...

  • me to, it seems i can't help but to shed a tear or two when the credits roll...:(

  • OMG ! if i was there i woud get shellshock in 30 mins

  • iam canadian but the germans are ppl 2 not evil beasts they have soles they feal and they 2 lost lives in this horrible war

  • people just think of germans as rolling beasts of pure evil but in movies such as this and saving private ryan it shows that germans were just as much a person as an allied soldier

  • Haven't seen Passchendaele, but I think Saving Private Ryan is a movie that glorifies war too much.

Most germans in Saving Private Ryan remain faceless so that it becomes easier to identify with the US soldiers who kill dozens of them.

I'm not saying that SPR shouldn't depict the US troops as the good guys and the nazis as the bad guys.

What I don't like about it is, that it turns a horrible war into a glorified adventure for fearless heroes.

  • i agree with all of that you are exactly right

  • @Molo9000 hell they should be glorified. millions of young men being taken from all corners of the country to fight for their country.

  • I've heard of the First World War trenches described as weeks of boredom and anxiety punctuated by short periods of shear terror and confusion. To me this movie was weeks of eager anticipation followed by hours of growing disappointment and frustration

  • i just watched this movie today it was so good every grade 12 and some grade 11s in our school had to go to it

  • i am canadian, yet i have not seen this movie yet. i want to lol.

but i was thinking.. they SHOULD make another perspective. sure the canadian perspective is something different than the usual americans saving the day... but honestly. it'd be very interesting to have a german point of view, more preferably of ww2. not all germans wanted to fight that.

  • an interesting comment roflmao88

It seems to be another stupid hollywood movie were germans are killed by thousand and always a company of ten men win the day.

Germans soldiers were more than that. They too fought for love and country.

  • Yes they did, if you´re interested I can recommend reading books about the Stosstrupp. The thing I would say stopped germany in WWI is the fact that the rest of the world was against them. Though I do not wish they had succeded, cus then france, belgium, holland, england and italy woudn´t have excisted in the way they do today.

  • if u are still wanting to see a german war movie watch valkyre it shows not all germans were hitlers

  • Hahaha yeah but Tom Cruise is in it, and it wreaks of Hollywood and the pronunciation is horrible, why not hire german actors that would give the movie a more authentic feeling.

  • ya to true lol. Damn you hollywood ruining good movies. DAMN YOU

  • Have you seen Stalingrad? That movie is awesome, and it feels so real.

I totally agree with you, and it´s so nice that you are canadian and can take a step back and see things in perspective, I mean since the movie is canadian, some people here can´t.

  • It just came out were I live.I thought it was more of a romance movie that a war movie although the action part in the middel was freeking Great.

  • The movie is great. I've seen it. I hope you guys get to see it in other parts of the world. It's really an incredible story of the carnage of war. While you're waiting for the movie to come, you could check out the book PASSCHENDAELE: CANADA'S TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDY ON THE FIELDS OF FLANDERS, by Norman Leach, the guy who was the historical consultant on the Paul Gross movie.

  • ya i saw it to.. it was great

  • I really loved this movie, but by the end I was so emotionally drained...only thing is i wish they showed more of Passchendaele (as in the whole conflict), since we have so few Canadian perspective movies about this time, this movie has to supplement for the entirety of WW1, of which it falls short...now if a canon of movies about Canada were made exploring these wars, then it would be perfect!

  • i relly like this movie i saw it today

  • Let´s do something different for once, tell the german part of a war for once! The Stosstruppen, they where actaully elite trench warfighters not "fighter-screamers from overseas in slowmotion"

  • elite trench warfighters? they lost twice you ass; look where that got you, inbred with russian peasants soilders, wow thats elite

  • Wow, do you know anything at all about WWI??

The Germans revolutionised warfare. The movie sucks balls, BALLS!!! It´s cheesy as fuck and the battlescenes are poor, the movie isn´t even about Passchendeale, it a lovestory. And what the fuck do you mean you? And wtf do you mean inbred russian peasant soldiers. Stosstruppen- Stormtroopers, sound familiar, yeah, it isn´t without reason. The movie even tells in the end that Passchendeale was recaptured some weeks later. Reason? Stosstruppen

  • Wow there lad, no need to flip a bird. Yea they took the lands back but there you have it, the film wasn't made on a glorious full of shit tip, and the love story was thrown in to show why most young Canadians went to fight in europe in the first place man. Don't start poppin off at the keyboard with who the real stormtroopers were,,psstt all had their glorious days, you need to acutally sit back and realise that war is shit period, and there are many proud Swedes and Germans in Canada, relax!

  • I´m just tired of the unfair picture that is constantly shown of germans in transatlantic movies. I don´t think the movie shows anything at all but a setting from WWI, I mean, the Jesus on the cross scene? Come on.

And still, the Germans where the stormtroopers. It´like saying the SAS is French.

  • absolutely right UlfLundel. I was expecting a much better portrayed movie in the battle scene. Instead it reminded me of the 1960s American WW2 war glory movies where the US were superhero soldiers and the enemy a bunch of idiots. People here don't understand or are not too sharp to see how the battle scenes JUST show Germans killing Canadians in the back directly or running around cluelessly.

I'm Canadian, but desire to see war movies made objectively and not biased.

  • just got back from watching this movie, pretty good movie actually...

  • The negative statements about the US military are actually a testament to the capable and remarkable abilites of the US military. I wonder if your remarks are an indictment of your military as lacking or just a simpletons pride? We are allies and rightly so. Why compare your military to an ally in negative terms compare it to an enemy. I feel pride in the abilities our allies and our similar cultures that have afforded our way of life to produce such amazing armed forces.

  • I agree my friend. Canada and the US are probably as close an ally than any other in history.

I was a proud member of the Canadian Forces and have served with my friends in the US. We are great neighbours and great friends, it's too bad so many people on this blog lack the education or the experience to know the truth.

Truth is, the US came in just at the right time in WW1, since France's military had all but been decimated and the Brits, well, their officers messed that up.

  • cant argue there, but your one of the only americans who can admit that, most just care about thier own and thats it

  • cant wait 4 this man its gunna own canada was what amercia wanted to be in the wars

  • its funny cuz after we captured passchendaele the british lost it after 2 days of fighting.

  • its not funny people died

  • does anyone know what its rated or what its going to be rated?

  • Finally a movie that tells the heroic story of Canada in the first world war and tells of how our nation, almost single handedly defeated the German tyranny on the western front.

France and Britain failed, but Canada was victorious and the whole world should know the truth, that it was CANADA, not Britian or the US, that defeated the Germans. Although the US played a significant roll at the end, it was Canada that the Germans feared the most.

  • SHEIZAH, EIN CANUCKS!

  • a canucks! that makes no sense

  • canucks is a canadian hockey team from vancouver...

  • i know right! some people are so stupid!

  • no i meant that ein canucks doesnt work because ein means a . die means the so that would work and he wasnt talking about the hockey team the term canucks was around before the team. the canadain comic book hero from ww2 was johnny canuck and im from vancouver by the way

  • the germans called us the crazy canuks

    .... and for good reason.

  • @megachaul18 The Germans gave the Canadians the nickname "Storm Troopers"

  • This movie gives me great pride in being Canadian! Throughout history Canada's involvment in every war has been astonishing!

The war of 1812, In World War 1, the battles at Vimmy Ridge, Psschendaele,Mount Sorrel, The Somme and Ypres. In world war 2 we helped capture Italy and on D-Day no other nation pushed so far ahead then the Canadians and liberated so many. And even now in Afghanastan The canadians are one of the only ones fighting in the south the other nations are hiding in the north!

  • i know were amazing figters we have an amazing military but i hate how the world looks at us as this under armed under trained military

  • Not true at all. Other soldiers from other countries respect the training and the courage of Canadian soldiers. We may not have a big Navy anymore either, but we have some well equipped ships patrolling the Gulf, and doing our job. Under the liberals we did no heavy lifting in NATO, and now we are making up for it and earning praise and influence in the western world. Canada was forged in war, not the blue helmet - Afganistan is proving this fact again, sadly, but proudly.

  • Yea man for sure..i meeen the Netherlands (i might be wrong) are still extremely thank full to us for getting the Germans out of there country. I guess what i meant is Its really really amazing to finally see the Canadian Forces in a movie instead of the Americans and the British

  • but here's the thing though. Canada doesnt need a big army to get the job done. it takes strategy and wits and courage. we have ALL that! so why would we need a huge friggin army like the americans eh?

  • your damn right.. im not against the americain but they all think there the best but really they just have a big army and good equipement.. but us canadian are less and have less equipement but we still get the job done as much as the U.S

  • That's not true. Most of the world respects our military, it's only Canadians and Americans that think the Canadian military is weak. Makes sense as the military in Canada doesn't flaunt its stuff on its own soil. Ironic, eh?

  • i think our military is amazing, amazing trained, best camo, amazing weaponry, amazing tradition, and i hope i get to fight wiht it one day but that dosent seem to be workign out

  • I was thrilled to be an extra in Passchendaele. I travelled from Kingston Ontario to Calgary and stayed there for five weeks to be in the movie as a background extra. For those who are wondering about how well it will be received, I would like to assure you that what I saw was thrilling. When special effects, musical score and all the other goodies are added I am sure that it will make all Canadians proud.

  • no country (apart from Britain to be fair) sacrificed more than Canada. more courageous allies could never be found in a thousand years searching. and no closer a comrade in arms.

  • ya its about canada ur most loyal allies and ur our best allie

  • forgive me if i my jus crap with accents but this story better be about Canadians!

because if its another self glorified war film about how bad the US had it then am gonna be sick. and they claim they won that war as well as WW2 utter arrogant bullshit. and if it is would be bullshit a country who clearly waited on the side lines to see which way it would swing and then dragged themselves to the war in 1917, 3 years after it started.

if this is about Canadians then forgive my anger

  • ya its all about canadians if u see the other trailer it talks about how only the canadian core was good enough to take ground from the germans and how the germans hated seeing canadians

  • Yea i think the CF was the most feared regiment in WWI

  • As quoted in the movie and qouted in real life by a captured German officer, "The Canadians are Stormtroopers" May not be the exact quote however this German officer did reffer us to Stormtroopers. Canada in WWI had only a population of 5 million (Roughly) and almost half a million had volunteered to serve in France. As the saying goes, "We might have lost the battle but we didn't lose the war!" Which is true we lost some battles but didn't lose the war. Which shows our determination in unity.

  • 8 million actually

  • So when's this movie coming out and will we be able to see it in the states?

  • CANADA CAN MAKE MOVIES TO AMERICA

  • what r u talking about???

  • I'm in this movie, as an extra. When they've won the battle and the doctor is announcing it in the hospital, the camera goes right beside my head as the main actress checks my wound.

  • The reason why she says "don't die" in this film is because that was actually said to Sergeant Dunne (played by Paul Gross) by his girl friend in real life. Paul Gross found out about this through reaserch, and he wants to make sure there is no historical inaccuracies. So now you can see why thay could not write a different phrase on the script.

  • "don't die."? lol how dumb can she be? obviously they don't want to die, and there is no skills needed to survive a war. you can be the most experienced man on the frontline when a shell bounces on you and wiped your head off while your friend is here for his first time yet survives the battle only to die in the next one.

  • Wow. Your a real ass. She doesn't want him to die, thats why she says "Dont die." You treat these soldiers with no respect.

  • well it's obvious she doesn't mean it literally, she's just implying that she doesn't want him to die. what you said is true but i sort of can't believe you took it that seriously...

Sorry for your loss of your friend in afghanistan though :(

  • she could of said, "please be carefully and try not to die." the way she said it kind of makes it look like a demand and sort of puts pressure on a soldier.

  • well yeah, but it's kind of meant to be a demand right? since they love eachother so much she's more of telling him not to die, even if they both know he could be dead the moment he stepped onto those fields. it's just hope really :P

  • No, honestly, it's not stupid. "Don't Die" could be a special thing they have together. Sort of an "inside". It could be something like an agreement. She doesn't want him to go, but he wants to serve his country, so the only way he can come back to his love is... well, not to die.

  • ure completely right cyndiannn. these people died by the thousand just to save your ungrateful ass ultradumbass? show some respect you dunce.

  • it looks so great, so want to see this movie

  • Finally someone is making a war movie about WW1. Its even better that its about Canadians and is directed by a Canadian.

Looks Great cant wait to see it
