i work at a truck stop. One of our drivers was getting fuel and when I asked him his truck number he told me 309. I couldn't stop the little smile and he caught it. He grinned at me and said " i can't believe you caught that". Why was he so suprised? probably because I'm only 19. I love this song!
Me and my dad got stuck at those crossroads, the engine gave out. Phantom309 and Big Joe are real, I knew something was up; I had a cold chill when Big Joe locked it down. This is real, not fake; that truck gives off that sort of vibe.
....... omgoodness .... This the song Red musta wrote after watching " Pee Wees' Big Adventure " when Pee Wee was hitch hiking at night and Large Marge stopped her tractor and picked up Pee Wee ... Prob the scary est part of the movie ..
my dad drives truck and he said that hitchikers come in all shapes sizes, colors, ages, phsycle condition and every one of em have the same thing in common....what do you think that is?
When i got to the weigh station and told the cops who i was and what had happened, they told me that every few years somebody will come in telling the same story. Turns out there was a rtig that went off a bridge in bad weather, but no one found it for 2 or 3 days. the trucker drowned. myt description of the guy, his trig and what he said matched up to the guy who drowned. Man, I was never so happy to get to a bus station and buy a ticket for the rest of the way and never hitched again
@bmxstar43 Yeah. Just typing that story out gave me the creeps. I haven't told that story much, to family or friends, I thought that they'd think me crazy looney. I had never told my wife about it, neither, strangely enough (NOT the girl from Talahasse!)...when I told her, she stayed up all night with the bedside lamp on! Hehe..that ALONE was worth it!
@mogges1 I was hitchhiking down I-10 in 1985, going to see my girlfriend in Talahasse, it started raining on me just outside of Mobile,This truckergave me a lift all the way to the state line. We shot the breeze, just normal stuffWe were about 5 miles from a weigh station when he pulled off to the side and let me downWhen I reached back to get my bag, he turned and smiled and said, "when u get to the station, tell them there's been an accident." I didn't know what to think so i walked on.
my father was a truck driver and he got me in to this kind of music and my sister said to me why do you listen you shit like that and i said what sort of music do you listen to? she said umm lady ga ga and justin bieber shit like that and i laughed my head off.
My son has his cdl learners and he travling now calls me when he is gone so i wont worry to much when he is on the road. I worry about wrecks you here about tractor trailers wrecking a lot but he is with some one who better be experience. so he can keep my oldest son safe.
some might think im full of shit but my dad and i seen Phantom 309 it is a big black Mack when he passed us it was just a glow i never seen so many lights on a truck before in my life and i have been on the road with my dad for 19 years i love it iv seen it all and Phantom 309 is out there
@samllblockboy Hey, no shit. I run heavy too. I swear I think i have seen 309 but in my case it was south Georgia? Check out Tom Waits version of the song to, I bet youll love it
Yes, I would keep that dime! Every so often I'd speak of it,/A gift from a trucker I'd say/ A good friend to all on the line/If ever you meet Big Joe and Phantom 309/tell 'em Red says hello/And never forgets/That night in the cold/ When a drifter down on his luck/Met with a truck/And the driver inside/Who gave him a dime/And the knowledge/Of good for all time.

@MissWWE20 Wow! You are so unique for listening to such old music and only being 20. Obviously 41 people are really impressed by how different you are. I envy you! I wish I listened to this music a year ago, my life would be so much more impressive and then I could say something cool like that on this video!!!
i hated country music, then i got a job at a restraunt that played old country, it was western themed and i heard the oldies over and over then they grew on me and i like alot of them, this is one of them. good song how he took his own life 2 save them kids, good times and memories 2 this.
If technology increases at the rate it has in the last ten years, there will not be a driver in the cab before long...fully automated....which might be a good idea....
this song always brought tears to my eyes. My papa loved and drove mack b models for years. We still have a couple his and a restored one. He was killed when he wrecked his and everytime I hear this song I think about him.
Among my Top 10 favorite songs of all time . . . When it's the dark and damp in the middle of winter . . I play my album all the time . . : >) Definitely captures the mood. Simply a great story . . Even though the sound is a little watery here . . I can see the record spinnin' on the turntable : >) . . Guys who write songs like this are The Real Deal . . e.g. Been There / Done That . .
this is the first song i sung from beginning to the end and will remember it all if someone would ask. I did'nt know this song rings through for some. next time i think of this song I will remember that truck drivers are not only kings of the road but are also humbled by the road.
Now, I've heard of guardian angels and saving graces, but it is really diffrent when you hear about a guardian angel trucker who makes a run he can't finish. My ol' man used to drive a truck, and he was a teamster, right before he got laid off, he was cut off by some woman in a minivan.
mmm sorry to here that guys i had a rig drove it for about 10 yrs or so i stopped driven rigs when i was 37 but 6 months before i quit i was driven through this street and there was a mother and her daughter about 4 yrs old and she ran out infront of my rig her name was sally 6 months later i quit big rigs because of that just thought id say that sence everyone else is saying what happend to them
I bet you that ole mack with the airbreaks was a dm 800. This reminds me of something happened around here it was real foggy and a bus driver ran out in front of that loaded log truck that trucker swerved busted through that guard rale but if he hadnt of swerved and ran into that creek and died thst bus load of kids would all be dead.
howdy yall my handle is big texan and my daddy drives a truck and he all ways talks about this song and one dad i was looking for some classic trucker songs nd i found this one and i started playing it on our way back to texas and he had a great big smile on his face it feels good to see him smile he dont smile much no more it just a good thing to know people still care about trucker and the things they go thow my dads handle is phantom texas he is a car haller u see him talk to him makes him :)
Every truck driver knows this song, and the feeling. A special prayer goes out from me to you, in hopes we all come home to our loved 1's safe and sound!
i love this song , but their is a version of this song with female backing vocal's . think it was red sovine who sang it , i need to find this version it is killing me .
if u can help send me a link etc , i must find this version
i have looked everywhere and can't fuckin find it yet it bring's back such great memorie's of my childhood
This song takes me back my uncle sang it when I was little. We lost him over 27 years ago. But when I hear this song a can see him singing it like I was yeasterday. So I just wanted to say thank you.
I haven't heard this song since I was about 6 years old. I never was much into country, but every little boy loves trucks and good story. Thanks for putting this up.
I've never been a huge fan iof Red Sovine, but Phantom 309 is a classic.

this song always brought tears to my eyes.

Every truck driver knows this song, and the feeling. A special prayer goes out from me to you, in hopes we all come home to our loved 1's safe and sound!

I haven't heard this song since I was about 6 years old. I never was much into country, but every little boy loves trucks and good story. Thanks for putting this up.
