@TinyKurds Sorry? Say again please. You say he "has no clue what he's doing"? I don't see how you made that connection... Its called "Improv" something that Paul is very good at.
@SanctuaryShred I was sarcastically mocking those who are saying that this solo is poorly done. Of course PG knows what he's doing. I'd consider him to be in the top three best guitarists in the world, and the best teacher I've ever seen.
As far as the BS "shredding" comment goes. I do believe they were playing 16th notes in the original solo as well and I don't see anything wrong or distasteful in Paul's version. Plus, no mindlessly repetitive "fat rock" (boo-diddy, boo-diddy) string bends either. There's no overplaying here and his phrasing is even better than Skynyrd's. To top it off, his rhythm work is better to boot. Hey, I grew up listening to this stuff and wore this tape out, so I'm not talking out of my A.
@hansrogernorden I understood it to be he has a bit of hearing loss currently, and now wears the special headphones with volume control on the inside and total blockage of the outside in order not to lose whatever normal hearing he has left. Never knew of the T- thing... like Townsend.
A guitarist that's been playing for over 30 years and has the music theory to prove it doesn't understand that YOU think there are too many notes in a solo? Stupid argument.
I assume you think playing slow means you have more soul too.
And I also assume you don't know what an opinion is.
I understand it's your opinion there are too many notes, but fucking seriously? Mr.Gilbert knows a shit load of stuff billions of people don't know.
Don't get too upset . I've been hearing this stupidity since EVH came out. They used to say really moronic things like: “I could be that good too if I had his effects” or when Gary Moore did End of the World, “He’s playing through a computer.” Retarded right? They couldn’t wrap their brains around what was happening so they made disparaging excuses. Now, ever since the 80’s, it’s all about the quantity of notes.
Also, In my opinion, if you’re not good enough to play what someone else does, you have no grounds to knock it, whether you “get it” or not and as an educated, practicing guitarist, if you don’t equally love Malmsteen as much as SRV, you should put the guitar down and pick up a shovel.
I think the solo was very melodic, and he kept up with the rhythm of the song without going complete overboard with it. Like some people said, this is just his take on the song... if you can do better, then you can bash Paul Gilbert.
man can he play a worse skynrd tune?....why dont he do "workin for MCA" or "saturday night special" sounds like he dosnt really know skynrd like the rest of us lolz...cause those are some rockin ass tunes...this is prob one of their worst tunes despite it being called "one of their best"
ok everybody has the right to have fun, Paul is surely a nice guy and he has a lot of talent but he's a terrible singer !!!
plus his solo on this one is very mechanical, no feeling at all, it sounds like he tells a poem without thinking what he says !! the problem is not the sound but what the music means and what you're feeling when you listen to it ... too much technical skills sometimes kill the feeling !!
There is a reason Skynyrd was so good. It's because they were one of a kind. Only they can reproduce their sound. This is just Paul's take on a song he likes. Skynyrd is Legendary and there is no comparison.Paul can't do what Skynyrd did and Skynyrd probably can not do what he does. It's always nice to see people appreciate other artist's music.
@safenders I'm a little offended for Paul there actually, I recon Skynyrd are the only ones who can produce their sound, but I'm sure it's not that difficult to reproduce any sound. I think to say Paul can't do what Skynyrd is an insult, especially when coupled with the remark that Skynyrd could 'probably' not do what he does.
@safenders I'm sure there are major differences that set these two bands apart but I always thought Molly Hatchet sounded a lot like Lynyrd Skynyrd. I'm no expert though I like Skynyrd but I'm not nuts about them, and never cared much for Molly Hatchet.
@SomeDude0nline I grew up listening to them so might be my emotional connection to the band But I think Skynyrd is one of the best bands. If you have not listened to them much I would suggest you listen to some of there songs like Simple Man or some of the less popular songs which to me are the real heart of their music.
@safenders Oh no I do like Skynyrd a lot and know most of their songs, I'm just not crazy about them and never really cared for Molly Hatchet so I can't really say definitively that Molly Hatchet is comparable to Skynyrd but I saw that you said there's no comparison and what I've heard of Hatchet sounds a lot like Skynyrd to me therefore I see them as comparable.
@SomeDude0nline Oh okay. I only know one song of Hatchet's that I would say sounds like Skynyrd. I'm not much of a fan of them. But I see what you mean.
@Brentypooz I would say the opposite would be true. Skynyrd was one of the biggest acts of the 70s, they are still considered one of the best bands of all time, their song writing ability was far more developed, Paul is a good technical player but he will never do what Skynyrd has done.
Fantastic song, great cover. But, the solo is so generic, everyone is so focused on speed rather than feeling. Maybe its just me but i'm not feeling the solo there, needs more soul. BTW just so you know i love Gilbert.
