If it's like Australia the bastard politicians get drunk with the revenue these things bring in and instead of fixing policy and doing their jobs properly see this kind of extortion as an easy out to reduce Government dept. We just had a state election and the Government changed.During the campaign the then opposition claimed the way the cameras were being used, by the Government, was a rort.First thing they did when they won the election was to install dozens of new speed cameras ARSEHOLES !
Yes I'm proud to be a speed camera oporator and only have the best interests of the public in mind, it makes me feel proud to think that may daly activity is saving lives and preventing accidents and fataleties .Shame on anybody that claims we are simply revenue raising .
@Heennrriiicckk You might not be but your employers are somewhere down the line, not every single camera is pointless IMO but a good 75% of those out there are, if you ask me anyway.
@liof16Red light cameras, providing they are working 100% improve safety, modify behavior at intersections, I do believe that .When they first introduced speed cameras locally they had strict rules to govern their placement and operation eg: Not on sloping roadways,Hills. Not within 500metres of visible speed sign.Gradually these regulations have been relaxed and I notice the cameras are placed not in real danger spots but where most likely to nab as many ppl inadvertently speeding as possible.
@Quontomleeeep Yeah that's what I mean, I can understand their purpose to a degree... it just so happens the reason I've been watching these videos is because I thought I set off a Gatso the other week at around 34MPH (funnily enough, placed at the bottom of a slope) - don't think I did set it off though as it was on the other side of the road and the lense was facing the front of my car, not the rear... at least I hope that means nothing will come of it.
@liof16 Sometimes the camera will flash during setup , I saw one flashing every time a car passed when I was walking the dog once, asked the guy sitting in the car why it was flashing cars that were obviously slowing down seeing the camera flashing away . He said he'd just set up and the was setting up the system ? Who knows, they did tests locally on fixed cameras governed a truck so it was impossible for it to go above 60 kph he drove backwards and forwards through the camera all day.
@liof16 and got a ticket for doing 10 kph over he limit. When confronted with this the smart arse Traffic Camera Office blamed it on a tail wind . LOL Shonky idiots .
Never mind the fines... you're also getting two penalty points every time you get caught. Insurance companies raise your premium if you have points on your licence. If you get 12 points on your licence the Gardai take away your licence and you're banned from driving for six months. To get 12 points on your licence you have to get caught speeding just six times.

I KNOW THE FUTURE.The next step is to REDUCE the speed limits on busy roads towards airports, ferry ports, and cities, where people are in a hurry, to about 10km BELOW what is a sensible speed. This reduced limit means they have plenty more people to TRAP, ordinary folk going to work etc. Then they hide the speed limit signs behind bushes etc for confusion.SORRY but cameras have to earn MONEY otherwise they won`t pay for themselves, and there`s not enough very dangerous speedsters for BIG CASH.
@denny174 There are enough speedsters in Ireland for this to make money. One speed trap caught 150 vehicles speeding out of 171. In was in the paper today that the fines will mount to €70 million anually.
Everytime you're caught speeding it's €80 fine and two points.
Insurance companies are set to cash in too as they're planning on raising insurance premiums by €100 for each point you have on your licence (but if you're under 25 it'll be €150 for each point you have on your licence).
bastards trying to get every little penny out of us Irish. Have they not fucked us up enough as it is. I'll wipe that smile off that cunts face with a 20lb salmon
Ahern is imagining rubbing his grubby little hands together with the thought of money. There is no incentive for the companies operating it... but there are for the government!! I don't see the point of putting them on the motorways because they seem to be the safest roads. AND why isn't it the law here, as it is in on the contenent, that all cars need to have winter tires during the winter months! I'd say allot of the accidents last year from the ice wouldn't have happened if this was the case!
@Tayto35 They're not putting these speed cameras on the motorways but the Garda Traffic Corps will be on the motorways with their hand held devices though. I passed one of them on the M9 motorway when going from Waterford to Dublin in October and saw another one when going in the opposite direction later the same day.
@cathalferris.couldn't agree with you more.them shower of bastard's need the biggest kick up the arse.they could start with cutting their salaries and changing their fancy cars.I hope very soon a new government will take charge and change the clown system.we'll drink to that!
@tom995649 Because its a big money making scam. The cameras love motorways because they know 90% of people will be over the limit. There is no money to be made on the dangerous backroads.
while I am all for road safety.Dont fool yourself these cameras are still a money making machine for the goverment.Take note that if you go over the speed limit and recieve your fine in the post you can add an extra 25 euro for administration.so in theory the more they catch the more 25 euros they get.
I'm afraid that TD Ahern's obvious contempt for the Irish motorist as he is demonstrating here is symptomatic of the contempt that his party has shown for the Irish people and the Irish country. Dev would be spinning in his grave!
I would think that it's about time to kick those useless numbskulls out and give someone else a chance - this crowd of muppets have had their chance and they've screwed us all...
Cant believe the day has come where PRIVATE companies can fine people for speeding on motorways. What a profitable business. And the excuse they use is to save lives.Of course a lot of the dumbed down Irish public think its its a great little scam they have going here. Its all about money be under no illusion here.Accidents have always happened & always will.Thats why they are called ACCIDENTS.
@UndefeatedArmy09 They are paid by the hour not the amount of cars they catch so that point isn't valid. Isn't it true that most accidents are caused by excessive speed? Therefore reducing people's speed should reduce road deaths.
@IngazZagni Thats where it all starts.I gurantee you these assholes will be on commision in a years time.Mark my words. As for speeding there are many factors involved eg. weather, road conditions, tyres, car, how experienced the drivers are etc.
@UndefeatedArmy09 I doubt it but we won't know until it happens or maybe (hopefully) never. As for your second point, this is very true. Going too fast for the current weather, road conditions, tyres, car and experience. If it was feasible we would have dynamic speed limits where it would reduce in poor conditions, maintenance works etc such as in the Port tunnel.
Reminding people about road safety is about a high visible presence of Garda, sending a ticket a week later isn't preventing speeding on the day. Typical Irish response FFS.
@artliam Once you get that ticket a week later however, won't it hit you where it hurts? In the wallet that is and will certainly be a good kick up the arse to remind people to watch their speed in future. Your idea seems very costly to the tax payer and besides don't the Gardai have better things to do than sitting on the side of the road eating donuts waiting for a speeding car to go by? Wait, are you encouraging that?
Funny the Speed thing. In the West the big problem (BIG) is slow drivers and bad drivers. People who drive fast are usually confident and compitent drivers. The SLOW drivers cause the problems, doing 40 in a 100 zone. Why not fine the slow and bad drivers?
do these suits chatting get any of the money from the speed cameras? cus seemed to me then theyre just the bithes collecting ti for someone else
