Im confussed as to what eee pc i have.

the chasis looks like the 900, but it has the specs of a 901 apart from the 6 cell battery and the hdd

it has 128mb graphics card, so yes it runs aero with no lagg or anything. And the celeron processor handles vista pretty good.

On my desktop, I could barely run more then 3 applications reliably. Of course, I've not touched the desktop for a long while, so I didn't have a clue why it was going so slow. I thought it was just Vista, since it was just very slow for so long...

Discovered that a virus scan was slowing down the whole system... for 5 HOURS. My desktop was rendered unusable for 5 HOURS. Of course, I don't run virus scans on my Linux laptop, so I didn't know it was scheduled.

Vista was fine after, but DAMN...

Good vid. I installed Vista on my eeePC 904HD and it works fine. The Atheros AR5007EG was a nightmare to get working, lots of Google searching finally find me some drivers. Still don't have Ethernet - but have no need for that :-)

I agree. AMD and Intel used to be about even back about 5 or more years ago, but now Intel is really putting out some superior technology. My next computer would definitely be with an Intel processor.

AMD still makes fast CPUs, but the Intel CPUs are much more efficient and thus create less heat.

When the Intel Core 2 Duo came out and was directly compared to the AMD X2 processors, it was found much more powerful. I recall a direct comparison article that I read that found Intel's 2nd-best chip being faster than AMD's 1st-best chip. The Core 2 Duo has 40% more performance and 40% less power consumption than a Pentium D processor. Do some reading, and you'll find the AMD chips do indeed run hotter than Core 2 Duos. Also, the Phenom had core speed problems when it first came out.

Keep in mind that you should compare AMD X2 to Intel Core 2 Duo and AMD Phenom to Intel Core 2 Quad for it to be a fair comparison.

apparently the Phenom II 950 at 3.2 Quad is pretty evenly matched up with the equivalent C2 Quad, I'm thinking about picking one up just for the sake of it being over 100 dollars cheaper and the fact that the multiplier is unlocked, i may OC it to 3.6 ghz which is apparently doable on air cooling

Sounds cool. I've always gone with AMD in my computers because of the price/performance ratio. AMD gives enough performance and usually has a much lower price. AMD should have fixed the core problem on the Phenom by now I would think. The stuff I told you about before I read about a year or more ago, so AMD could very well be close to Intel in performance now. I don't know why you need a quad-core processor, but it should be fun to have that much multi-tasking ability.

Right now I'm using a laptop with a 3300+ Sempron (32-bit, 2.0 GHz), integrated ATI Xpress 200M graphics, onboard audio, and 1GB of PC2700 DDR1 memory. My gaming rig had a 3200+ Athlon XP (32-bit, 2.2GHz), NVIDIA 7600GT (AGP 8X), X-Fi XtremeMusic audio, and 1GB of PC3200 DDR1 memory. I literally use computers that are almost 5 years old in specs. I don't even have my gaming rig anymore because I don't play games anymore. I have no need for a fast computer since I just do office work.

@JKK, I installed Vista on my 901. When I boot up, I get normal sounds and lights. But no picture. I put it in standby and the display works fine. It does this with Windows 7 also. But not XP. It works fine until you reboot. Every time you reboot, you have to put it in standby. What gives? Can you help?

Vista's not recommended for this because netbooks have slow processors. The 901 has 1gb ram, enough for Vista and a 160GB (I checked on Amazon).

you're wrong, the 901 has 4+8 GB Solid State Disk. Vista or Windows 7 runs smoothly on these little machines when doing simple tasks. But installing Vista or Windows 7 on the 901 is tricky, almost impossible.

The best methods include getting the video/touchpad/wifi drivers from the manufacturers ahead of time, installing a 1.8 inch HDD and utilizing an external optics drive (or buying a SATA/IDE to USB cable and leeching off your desktop). For performance, best pick up 2GB of memory, which at maximum speed supported by the EEE, costs $20 for G.Skill at freaking 4-4-4-13 timings. Can't beat that.

Hey, thanks for this vid! I've just ordered eee 1000H and I was worried that I wouldn't be able to run vista on it. I've read that eee1000 uses the same graphics chip (and the same asus chipset in general) as your 901, so I guess it will work out just fine! Actually your little machine runs vista better than my desktop computer! It has an integrated intel graphics chip and 1 gb of system ram, and it doesn't handle the transparent theme at all! It's also a bit slow on general performance...

@Fateel in the eee 900 there is a 900 MHz Intel Celeron-M ULV 353 CPU, in the 901 there is a 1,6 GHz Intel Atom...

I also own a 901, i run Windows 7 ultimate on it, it works really good, the only problem was to update the bios before installing W7. An other thing was that it's a bit hard to get the drivers for windows 7. I recommand to look for 'eee 1000h windows 7 dirvers'. (1000h has the same hardware as the 901, the only difference is that the 1000h has a HDD and it has 10" screen.)
