For the record, I know the folks that played on this ad and the contractor that hired everyone for the gig. There were, I believe, two studio sessions to pre-record the music using the 'car-instruments', then one day of live filming to create the commercial. So, yes, they're overdubbing, but it's 100% using these 'instruments'.
Thank you for that mate, whether or not it had been real which I believed it was anyway this is a very imaginative concept and one of the best uses of a ford focus I've ever seen!
"...the ensemble itself does play live; thats the point. Crave had wondered if the instruments were just for show. Theyre not.
The assumption had been that this was footage of these instruments with conventional instruments providing the sound, and thats not true. The instruments you see in the ad are the instruments you hear in the soundtrack."
I don't buy it. 1) were they really playing, the video would be better synced with the instrument featured. Not the whole time, but once in a while would be nice. 2)getting that many musicians to play THAT well on those instruments, with such overacted emotional display, is the ultimate hint.
Yes, it's overdubbed. However, that doesn't mean that it wasn't played on those instruments. I've seen posts from several musicians who recorded the overdubs and they make it quite clear that they were using these instruments. The "London Tour" video is live, and is fraught with intonation problems. So what? You're surprised that a studio version sounds better than a live version? What rock have you been living under?
I assume those who think music was played on the "instruments" shown, or wonder if it was, had tongues firmlly in cheeks. The alternative would be sad.
Sorry folks. it's a nice idea but I'm fairly certain the music you hear in this ad is overdubbed. I play the cello - which is the instrument with the melody line in this song. When I saw the windshield wiper used as a bow, I knew what we're hearing is not what those instruments sound like. Metal does not resonate the same way wood does and none of the instruments have pick-ups (like on an electric guitar.) Those mics are too far away from those instruments to pick up what little sound there is.
Fair point, but the rating is 5*, so most people like it. And why would anyone come to the video if they hate it.
Oh, and its spelt 'who' not 'hoo'.
I suppose it helps if you have a little understanding of classical music, or any musical theory knowledge. The advert itself may not be too interesting or exciting, but to make such great music from pieces of a car is incredible.
Not to be too obnoxious -- but if you are going to correct someone's spelling errors, be sure not to make mistakes of your own. "Spelt" is spelled s-p-e-l-l-e-d. I believe spelt is a flour substitute.
"Spelt" is the traditional British way of spelling it. "Spelled" is the American spelling. "Spelled" is now creeping more and more into UK English. However it is, it should be pronounced "Spelt". It is the same with Learnt and Learned.
I love the part where they make the instruments! Up till seeing this I always thought that this advert was just being played by ordinary musical instruments. How wrong I was.
This is so awesome. I just saw them talking about it on the news this morning and I knew it would be great to watch and listen to, all the way through. 5 stars for Ford!
Sounds much like toned down carnival music, but with interesting looking and sounding instruments.I seem to follow the music better each time I listen though.
Einfach nur gut. Bei mir mit Gänsehauteffekt.

And, check out the "London Tour" video. Certainly not the same caliber of recording, but obviously NOT the same quality of natural sound either.
Nope.

What you hear is produced by those instruments.
