it's impressive but i would rather use a traditional sling so that i can improve my skill with that instead of this. nothing against this one, i just like the traditional ones more
There is little reason to build slings out of makeshift materials when paracord is plentiful and inexpensive. Shoelaces and old wallets sound like a recipe for disaster, or at least, slings with very short lifespans and low reliability. I go with paracord all the time because IT WORKS.
Just fuckin make one. If you have string and denim you have a sling. Leather works better but, you can use pretty much what ever you want. Or go to a leather store and buy a small scrap, that would cost you nothing.
Sorry to burst your bubbles, but a normal sling is WAYYYY more powerful than a staff sling, plus normal slings get GREATER range than a staff sling will ever get!!!!! I use a 13 foot sling that uses 5 oz ammo. So face the facts everybody!!!!
actually genius, the staff sling was invented after the sheperds sling, and has distinctive advantage over a sheperds sling because of the longer arm and therefore, increased velocity. the only reason your sling MIGHT be more powerful is because it is rediculously long and inpractical.
Why do you think it is impractical? If you havent read my other comments, i stated the record slining distance (1563 feet) so that means more velocity!!! A staff sling cant get more than 150 yards.
the record slinging distance with a shepards sling was set with a 51" sling and a 52 gr. stone, a distance of approx. 430 yds. which is none the less impressive, but the sling was meant to be a tool and weapon. a 13 foot sling requires a tremendous area in which to swing it up. therefore by the time you have swung it up your game has bolted and as an ancient representation of a weapon it is large and impractical. that leaves only one use. a toy.
Ha,ha lol, a toy are you kidding me?? If i wanted to sling at an enemy, I would be up close at point-blank range (because accuracy is limited) using a certain tecnique that I use for the 13 foot sling I have, and then realease a 5 oz rock going 250 mph or more, and, well you know what would happen next (hole through head). Check out my channel for the tecnique i use.
Why would you try to hit game with a sling from 430 yards? Even if you hit it, there would be so little energy carried by the stone that it would hurt, but not kill. If you're hunting with a sling you try to be about 25 yards at the greatest. A normal sized sling (mine is about three feet) can do great damage with great accuracy, depending on the casting technique. But I agree, a sling 13 feet long has no practical application, not even in war. Staff slings were seige weapons.
a stone leaving a normal sling (mine is about 2,7 ft long) moves along between 110 and 180 mph. even at 200 yds., as a weapon of war a rock traveling that fast from the start is still going to be moving along relatively fast. even at 80 mph a 1/4 lb. rock strinkes with 53 ft*lbs of energy. roughly the equivalent of a .36 caliber civil war cap and ball revolver. even if it isnt 100% lethal, it is incapacitating. it is a viable weapon even at those ranges.
and as for accuracy, slings stopped being used as an accurate weapon and was used in volley because of the advent of the bow volleys increased the range at which missile attacks would be executed. the idea was not to hit an individual person, but to throw enough stone that combatants are bound to be hit and incapacitated. i do agree that to attempt to hunt at long range is absurd. for me the animal would have to be inside 15 yards.
I had not heard of a staff sling before. It seems to be a handheld trebuchet with impressive range. How accurate it is compared to the regular slings I played with as a kid?
Honestly, I haven't used the staff sling much at all since the day I made this video. I am much more interested in using the handheld finger-loop version, and I have been getting nice distance with that, and improve accuracy.
But truth be told, I haven't been really going for a "target" yet. Really just getting the feel for it. I'm confident that the staff sling, in practiced hands, is capable of both great range and great accuracy.
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!! Your completely wrong!! staff slings suck!! Normal slings are way more powerful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And normal slings get better distances!!! Havent you heard the world record distance for a normal sling? Its about 1563 feet! Staff slings dont reach distances more than 150 yards!! Now thats totaly pathetic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hey, i didn't say staff slings are supperrior, or more powerful (although it is) and you do realize that staffs slings are like our modern day snipers, or rocket launcher holder dudes, so in other words, a staff sling would be in action right next to a ballista. besides, how long was that sling, and what method did he use?
well, the staff sling is a 2 fet sling on a 6 ft pole, so in other words yo have a 8 foot sling that is more controllable then a single sling at 8ft. going like this then you can put even more force to it. a person here has a 13 foot long sling and he had to whirl it around his BODY. with staff sling you do not have to whirl it around, thus putting all your energy in it.
in more scientific terms, the staff sling is long and controllable, therefor maximizing power
Hey, today I was out (11/02/08) slinging golf balls at this amphitheatre again, this time without the staff, using a Figure-8 technique.
See that amphitheater down there? I was regularly pelting the middle of that wall with line drives--and I had one or two go OVER the TOP of the thing... :-D hahahahaha!!
If you listen carefully, at 01:42, you can hear the golf ball whack the backstop. I think it hit the wall just in front of the stage on that shot. :-D
Sorry that the neon-yellow golf balls I used for ammunition don't show up in the video. (I was using my still camera to shoot the video and it's not nearly as good as a dedicated video camera would have been.) Just to let you know, I was ~easily~ whacking the golf balls against the bandshell and the stage from a distance I estimate was 50-75 yards away, possibly more. And I was not max-ing out the potential of the sling!
can you show us how to make the pouch because slinging. org is not helping me at all

@MonkySyndrome This is a tradational sling. And it was more popular, and more effective than the David & Goliath type sling.

You need to go to a traditional, or cultural store, perhaps some museums. Though is preferable for you to make it yourself, it's not that hard,
