Just bought a '92 last week. Same paint scheme as this one. Since my income is limted (I'm a student) I'm going to mod my truck slowly over time....right now the plan is to first buy gauges, then do some pump work, larger injectors, and then I'll go from there. Any suggestions?
for the most part the comment section hurts to read, sooo many fly-by night jerk offs who dont know shit or read a couple of paragraphs out a magazine and are all of sudden master tech's...fuck off.
@NathansBackwoods Only to ignorant dolts. There is nothing good about "rolling coal". It doesn't look cool and its actually very harmful to every diesel owner.
If you like having the option to buy a diesel at all then "rolling coal" is the LAST thing you should be doing. It makes the public believe diesels are dirty, smelly and noisy which in turn reduces sales of diesels and reduces incentive for manufacturers to offer them.
@kdiesel4255 I have to disagree in a sense. Dont want to be a jerk though. When your burning fuel, it does produce smoke. But, excessive smoke such as that is unburnt, for the most part, and is due to not enough timing, too much fuel, and not enough air. My truck smokes a decent amount, but as soon as the turbo lights, it clears up to a light haze. Dont get me wrong, i got nothing against some smoke on the dyno, maybe a ricer or two, but not everyday driving.
@Turbo617 dude thats the funnest part "ROLLING COAL" its not harmful to shit but the earth its harmful to you if your face is by the pipe when its smoking other than that it's my dream truck if you don't like then fuck you!!!
@NIGHTRIDER995 Thank you for demonstrating your amazingly low intelligence. Please come back when you are able to communicate in English that doesn't involve lame obscenities that offend nobody.
I love the stance of this rig!!! Everyone seems to put like 285's or 265's on these old 1st gens.... they look anemic... are yo runnin 13.50's or bigger, either way they look perfect on that truck.!!
@denrocks2 you can only compare this engine to the 5.0 V10 diesel from the Volkswagen Tuareg and only then tell me if your consider this engine a masterpiece.
Is this one efficient? NO!
Is the Cummins refined? NO!
And now let's ask the same questions ,this time referring to the Cummins's european conterpart.
Is the VW V10 efficient? Yes, sir!
Is it refined? Yes, sir!
It's just a matter of finece, a notion you americans clearly can not grasp.
@MrRmjjmr why the f**k should I do a sled pull with a refined, efficient, luxury ,technology packed SUV? And as far as I know, sled pulls are generally for tractors :D. I just don't get you,. How much fun can it be to step a bit on the gas and have clouds of smoke coming out of the exhaust? I just guess that's the american way.
We dont get the diesel goodies you all get in Brittain/Europe

@tudordanyel93 However the 1100lb longstroke I6 cummins is one of the toughest SOB mills youll find in a N/Am. pickup.... and a few have found thier way into some big bodied classic cars too...
You need to realise... the Cummins was an industrial engine.... so is the 6.9/7.3 Ford/International. The V10TDI is purpose built..... for cars and suvs.....and i guess vans over there... a 5.9 cummins can be found in vehicles with 15000lb+ GVWR..... so.... whatever dude..... i choose torque..... your engine doesnt make enough, for the HP it puts out

Dont chirp me back fucknut. You dont have the fuckin required equipment
Put up
or shut the fuck up!!
1st gen man's truck is fuckin awesome. And you fuckin know it.
I think we're mostly in agreement, just a little different view. I agree that this truck smokes excessively, and that it should not be driven on the street. That being said, i still say you cannot build that power level with a mechanically injected diesel and have no smoke. It simply won't work. The fuel needed to drive a turbo that can support that level is simply gonna smoke. Period. But like i said, i would rather see a clean 400 hp, vs a extremely smokey 600. BUt i like them both!!!
Well, no. ALthough i'm with you on the honda thing. However, in performance diesels, especially high hp mechanically injected engines, you're gonna have alot of smoke. Part of it is being heavily overfueled as you said, but another part is typically they will use a large turbo that doesn not spool up until higher rpm and a heavier load. This will cause smoke before the turbo comes up. There is no way to 'tune' a clean 600 hp diesel. Unless we're the almight you, of coarse.
A diesel can runaway if the oil seals in the turbo blows and it pumps oil into the engine and it burns the engine oil and will continue to rev higher and higher.
I don't know EXACTLY what causes it, but in a diesel the entire fueling/ignition process is controlled by a mechanical pump (on older ones) and a run away is where the pump won't de-fuel. so the pump fails
A run away is when a diesel gets it's fuel from an outside source and just accelerates higher and higher until it runs out of fuel or seizes up. Diesel's do not have a throttle, they are only accelerated by adding fuel. If the engine gets it fuel from an outside source (typically from oil in the intake from a blow turbo) it just accelerates as fast as it has fuel to support it, and there's nothing you can do to stop it. I've seen it up close, and it sucks.
I know that. I merely meant that unless you have the hood open, the intake off, and a clear path to the engine, you can do nothing. It's real easy to sit there and say, just cover the intake. easier said than done.
ive see a few 24v mills run an linear actuated gate valve..much like a sliding damper for a furnace. Im pretty sure it was air powered. So if the prick starts running away, you just dump the gate shut and itll choke the engine out before it grandes..
you have to cut larger valves to even get close to a 24v stock! stock for stock the 24v outflows a 12v 20%. iv had both on the flow bench and have one of each ported and polished, valve grind, intake off. i was even able to get 5% more flow out of a "schieds" port and polished 12v head ;-) the 12v is more desired due to it having less moving parts for use at higher rpm.
Yikes, I feel real bad for that, or those, turbo's. With EGT's that high (and they would be real high with that amount of fuel), with it shutting down like that its going to cook them in no time.
thought u could avoid this by bein easy on the throttle let off??? cuz i turned my pump in this much and it did that on me(with no damage) but learned not to just let all off on the throttle.. guess i shold look into it more
what the hell happened averything suddenly stoped oh yea and is the motor the stock 1st gen 12 valve or second gen p pumped 12 valve cuz i know people like to do that swap alot
Head and rotor. I had the fuel screw a turn or two to farr, thats what caused the runaway. But the reason it shut down was because the 14mm head and rotor seized. The vane pump in the pump cant keep up with the amount of fuel that the 14mm h&r can flow. Even with massive fuel systems and fuel coolers its still possible to seize one up.
Yea i prolly had 2000 miles of driving time on it set the way it was. I never really did get on it tho. I just screwed it in far enough to where when you reved the engine it would hang or the rpm would start to float so to speak, then id back it back out a turn. My tach recalled 4700rpm.

Nope, everything except the head and rotor in the injection pump survived.
1stgenman 3 years ago
how did the injection pump fail, was this failure cause of runaway if it was a runaway?
bosch ve pump or big 7100 thing?
tpvalley 3 years ago
Its the bosch VE, yea the runaway was the cause of the failure. The 14mm h&r's dont like alot of rpm.
1stgenman 3 years ago
h & r's??
I know if u over adjust them the rpms can stick, I have a VE running up to 5000rpm no problems, on a smaller engine of course.
tpvalley 3 years ago
Head and rotor. I had the fuel screw a turn or two to farr, thats what caused the runaway. But the reason it shut down was because the 14mm head and rotor seized. The vane pump in the pump cant keep up with the amount of fuel that the 14mm h&r can flow. Even with massive fuel systems and fuel coolers its still possible to seize one up.
