I got to see them years ago at the long lost Bottom Line in NYC. Sat right up against the stage just a few feet from Trey and was blown away by what I heard that night. Really stunning.
Very tight work, Trey clearly taking after Tony Levin's work on the Chapman Stick (the Warr Guitar & the Chapman Stick are similar....). I'd like to see Trey do more of this clean austere style.
As a jazz musician, I think rock fans have something to learn from jazz. Jazz artists borrow and trade licks all the time, that doesn't mean they're bad or unoriginal, they're just using ideas of others to build upon their own, just like in this song.
i wouldn't say this is borrowed from crim, and i know their music pretty well. trey was in crim (c) 90s -2k, and def has his own tone. maybe that's what you're recognizing?
anyone not overly familar w/trey gunn i recommend his albums 'the third star' and 'the joy of molybdenum' highly.
Unbelievable that anyone could play like this. Also, after listening really hard, I couldn't really hear any KC and the Sunshine Band influences, so I don't know what people are talking about...
Met Trey and Pat after a King Krimson show here in ST Louis -- two nice guys and great musicians. How can they help but be influenced by Fripp and Belew?
Discipline is NOT an end in itself... remember... it is a MEANS to an end. Trey has picked up the ball and is moving it forward from where Fripp last dropped it, lol... this is unbelievably good, whether or not he borrowed a theme from KC.
@aliendogbrain I agree it is indeed pretty damn good as well as derivative.....but i would argue that Fripp has not exactly "dropped the ball" AFAIK... :-)
I've been listening to both this and 'sheltering sky' and to be very honest, I cant figure out how one can call this a ripoff of 'sheltering sky'. Good tune. The drummer is the pick of the lot on this tume. He can play both the tabla and the drum kit and sound good. Incredible.............
@shelterit Honestly I cant fiugre out. Anyway listened to this after a good few months, and thanx for bringing me back to this wonderful piece..............
Your so damned lucky you can see that LIVE ! Why can't we get this here in New Zealand
Too small a country I suppose...still Brilliant music and MANY thanks for posting this clip...

I gotta say, Trey Gunn becomes his usual impressive when he gets to 3:20.

I don't think I've ever been so mesmerized by a hand-drummer.

That is something else... Definitely can hear some Discipline and Red influence in there.

it's not a rip-off, it's a direct use of a king crimson riff from the song Discipline. it's done on purpose, it's fun

Plus, from 2:15, the "Red" middle part, to 3:14.
pky666 2 years ago
I stand corrected - it was "Waiting Man" that I heard, but yes, it is very much "Discipline" soaked as well.

Me: 'So you must really be into King Crimson, eh?'
Trey: 'King who?'

This is fantastic! Loving the overt KC influence.

Wrong song. It's not close to KC's "Sheltering Sky", but it certainly borrows from "Discipline".

@drhowarddrfinedrhowa I also hear a lot of "Waiting Man".

Pretty close rip off of "Sheltering Sky" by King Crimson.
pky666 3 years ago
no it's not. maybe you meant to say "Discipline" becuase it sounds like a pretty close rip off that one to me. Frame by Frame too.
