Finland kicked the ass of the USSR! Outnumbered, outgunned, and with less tanks the Fins did something that nobody expected: they beat the shit out of the advancing Soviet armies! :D

Finnish government didn't invest enough money for defence in the 30's. Mannerheim continuously demanded more money to be put in defence. If the Finnish Army had been reasonably equipped, the Soviets could have been kept at bay much better. The peace treaty terms would have been much more pleasant for Finns if our Army had been in reasonable condition. Nowadays they're also "saving" from the defence budjet... I hope it doesn't turn out bad...

Well, Finns didn't gave up the Jews to Nazis which is ok. But they gave up Soviet prisoners to Nazis according to Wikipedia, which is despicable and just as bad, in regard with Hitler's views on Slavic peoples.

@NikNovi Finns tried to buy weaons from all allied nations between the wars to survive. The only weapons, they actually managed to buy were second tier Fench tanks, Stug 3 and spare parts from Sovjet tanks from the Nazi Reserves.in exchange for Finnish SS volonteers and Sovjet Prisoners. I would not use the term despicable for anything done out of immediate desperation.

And Finland was dependent on Germany, it would be foolish to make Hitler angry just because we wouldn't give our enemies, that just had tried to invade us, to him, for our "friend"

It's interesting to think how much this war actually backfired for the soviets, not only did it strain the soviet army far more then expected at an cost thousands of soldiers life and millions in damaged and destroyed equipment., the war also was a key reason why Germany launched Operation Barbarossa. Stalin was a extremely incompetent leader.

@darthbandon10 Well back then it was the Imperial Russia with monarchy, which was defeated in the russian civil war by communists who formed USSR. Russian Grand Duke Nicholas II granted finland it's independence. He was executed by the commies.

i think this was where the soviets learned how to defend. marksmanship was a big part of the defend of stalingrad, because its a metal weapon. you never know, if somebody is watching you through a scope... bad feeling.

The geographical mistakes of this documentary is dissapointing... For example, when the narrator says something about the Isthmus beign the main focus of the soviets, it shows eastern Finnish Karelia, not the the Isthmus, and shows that Terijoki is in north-western Karelia, when it really is in the Isthmus and right next to the border.

Enjoyable documentary otherwise.

@rmkt2 Actually finnish volunteer's battalion in waffen ss were used for tasks that germans couldn't fill. Great example is the hill 711. Watch my video: watch?v=ah71nonTtKg. Also when germans were on finnish Lapland (AOK Norwegen with 2. D and 3. D, 36th army corps with SS-D Nord ja 169. D). Russians attacked against germans rather than finns. There is many books which reveals what russians thought about finnish and german soldiers. Great example is also the Lapland's War.

Not the best document of the subject. Maps shown aren't good and have some mistakes. Large part of Soviet footage seems to be from 1941 and later, no T-34s were used in Winter War and only few KV-1s saw action in late war. Three stars.

But to be correct, the Nordic countries is not the same as Scandinavia.

It is like the Baltics vs. Europe, in a way (not quite).

Nordic C is also Iceland and Finland, a bigger territory.

Finns were lucky because they fought inexpierenced conscripts and new offisers thanks to the perjes. They had guns and they knew the terrain. So they had great advantages and the russians had big disadvantages. Even still they did a fucking great job. Simo Häyhä is amazing.
