Everybody has something that they must give up in order to be able to have faith in God. In this case, it was a rich man's money. He loved his wealth more than anything else and so he refused to give it up for God. We must give up the things that hinder our walk with God, and if money is one of those, then yes, give it up. If he wanted everyone to sell to the poor, he would have said that to EVERYONE that asked him the way to eternal life. Jesus said the same basic message to everyone he came across, which is to have faith in Him, and love him and show him your love by following his teachings. When he spoke to Nicodemus in John 3, he told him that he must be born of water and spirit, that is, born again in Jesus Christ. It's the same message, just worded differently according to the situation.
