Scorpion and Sub-Zero are not brothers. Scorpion's Japanese and Sub-Zero's Chinese.

There should have been more in the story later about Scorpion's wife and child he left behind.

Sub-Zero didn't really intend to murder Scorpion. He just kind of got in the way of a mission and would have been killed himself if he hadn't. This mission would lead to his meeting Shang Tsung.

...And the uniting of Tsung and Quan Chi.

Quan Chi just got Sub-Zero to do dirty work that defied Lin Kuei.
