  • Smith can look back at this moment today & just shake his head because he would later win 3 Cups with Oilers but at the moment it was absolutely devastating. This was a strange series because Flames were always able to thwart any momentum Oilers were developing but Edmonton clearly had a superior team. Everyone was waiting for Oilers to seize control but Flames keep playing over their heads. This was a series that was going to be decided by a single mistake & it was a doozy.

  • I feel sorry for Smith, I really do, it was just an accident, though. Flukes, unfortunately are part of the game. The Flames formulated a specific game plan to neutralize Edmonton's style, and THE OILERS DIDN"T ADJUST TO IT. All Smith did was administer the coup de grace staged by his teammates. Edmonton had plenty of time to get that goal back and they didn't. They lost as a TEAM.

  • (Al macinnis, 70 yrs old):

    (Using really old man voice)

Ya know, back in the ol`days, whe (Flames) moved on to the Playoffs Finals all because a idiot (Smith) scored on himself`

  • If the Oilers win that game they probably win 5 Cups in a row and 6 out of 7, poor Smith, never lived that down

  • You're welcome Calgary we handed you you're first Stanley enjoy it

  • @TheWillyWalawala That was 1986 bro, Calgary didn't win the cup until 88-89. The only thing you handed us was the laughable anecdote of the NHL's most embarassing goal.

  • When he went behind the net from that point on the rowd would yell "shoot !"

  • Looks good on the clown that cut Pavel Bure's career short

  • My dad was at that game.

  • This 1985-1986 edition of the Edmonton Oilers rank high on the list above the 1992-1993 Pittsburgh Penguins, the 1995-1996 Detroit Red Wings & last year's Washington Capitals as the greatest teams that never won the Stanley Cup.

  • It was depressing lol...after the game I said to my brother, they should've trade him, not Larry Melynek.

  • This guy and his family live in my town

  • classic battle of alberta

calgary needs us to score on ourselves just to get a win lol

  • I remember watching that series. Isn't that the same game (or series) McSorley speared the guy from the bench? Steve Smith blubbered in the camera like a two year old after that goal.

  • @fenderbassfan No,you're thinking of the series 2 years later when Edmonton exacted revenge & swept Calgary.McSorley had speared Mike Bullard as he was heading for the bench.

  • To put it all on Steve SMith is ridiculous. They had almost 15 minutes to score, they are suppose to be the greatest offensive team ever. Not to mention, is it Steve Smith's fault that they lost the other 3 games that forced a game 7?

  • Pure skill there by Calgary. They win by fluke, wow, what a proud moment for Flames fans.

  • @Mineav Pushing the Oilers to 7 games, let alone beating them, was no easy feat in those days nor was it a fluke.

  • @landrykkb Point taken. They deserve respect for what they were able to do.

  • Steve Smith was dubbed the biggest idiot in Edmonton after the '86 Campbell Conference finals!

  • All hockey players put the puck into their own nets at one point or another, if not several times in their careers but for Steve, it just happened at the worst possible time.

  • smith was only in because Fogolen was injured.

  • @atranos excuses, excuses, and more excuses.

  • @cwcwful nope, just one!

  • BOYLE

  • ....on his 23rd birthday!!!

  • Flames suck

  • Daffyhgrhg

  • This play may have possibly stood in the way of 5 straight cups.

  • Comment removed

  • landrykkb, what are you talking about? I just said this play stood in the way of 5 straight cups.

  • What I meant to say was that didn't end a dynasty because another one started the following season.Don't take it out on me because you're a miserable Leafs fan!

  • Thanks for wasting my time.

  • if you were any better than me,you wouldn't have wasted your own time by replying!

  • @leafyutube Maybe. Will never know.

  • I had watched this game in its entirety recently and Neal Sheehy nearly gave the Oilers the equalizer in their own zone themselves but Vernon managed to see it just in the nick of time.

  • by himself, he lost the entire season and playoffs for his team, yep, id call this a FML

  • That is a very shortsighted point of view!No 7 game series is ever decided on the basis of one bad play!

  • Send me the video in which Mac T. rips the tongue out of Harvey the hound.

  • lol i hope his son, Barron learns to make a bettter outlet pass...

  • The same year as Bill Buckner.

  • same year as donnie moore too. and the challenger explosion. and the insider trading scandal. and len bias dying two days after being drafted 2nd overall. but it was also the year of jordan's 63 in boston, clemens' 20k, the bears super bowl sweep, mike tyson's demolition of the heavyweight division, jack nicklaus' masters comeback, and maradona's amazing goal against england.

  • FML worthy?

  • @RichV20 FML Means what?

  • There is little doubt Steve Smith was great player. He played great for the hawks later on. That is probably considered the biggest mistake in NHL history. Oh no wait, that was Gary Bettman! No Cups for me, although a guy from my home town won it with the devils in 95'.

  • Oh wow the Flames win a fluke! Whoopty-doo Basil what does it all mean?

  • Flames are still better then the Coilers.

  • You forgot this, Edmonton still had morethen 14 min to score. I am not a calgary or a Edmonton fan, but you sound like a whinner to me. Give Calgary credit, they had to stop edmonton from scoring, wright?

  • Buddy: still had 14 minutes to score eh? Who cares it was stupid Steve Smith who screwed up if he didn't score that fluke goal on net the Oilers would've won the cup that year. And dude, learn how to correct your spelling "misteaks" lmao!

  • Also it been more then 20 years, get over it already.

  • Your a Baby. You win, and lose as a team.

  • Your a whiner. Stop being a baby.

  • @oilersridersbluejays Notice your other thumps down? It not just me.

  • @cw1310 Using commas, every second, or third word, is really, annoying. Please learn, how to properly, use a comma.

  • @oilersridersbluejays It means it counts, just as much as a nice goal. Is that good enough.

  • my parents almost named me steve. thank god they didn't. i would have been little steve smith. that was the worst screw up in nhl history

  • We all make mistake. By the way Steve Smith did, I believe the next year get this name on the Stanley cups. How many times does your name, appear on the Stanley cup. Did you say zero.

  • Steve Smith would have his name engraved on the Cup the 2 following seasons and again in 1990.They were all with the Edmonton Oilers,by the way!

  • @landrykkb You are right. I forgot about1990.

  • Anybody who thinks that Steve Smith costed Edmonton this series & ultimately the Cup,is very short sighted. If you recall,Calgary had their way with them from Game 1.They either lead or the series was tied.Montreal was destined to win the Cup that year, regardless of whether they played Calgary or Edmonton in the finals.

  • A monumental screw up... the Oilers lost their dynasty of the 80's and the Montreal Canadiens won their 23rd Stanley Cup

As a Montreal Fan... Thank You Steve Smith!!!!

  • ahaha this was on his birthday too lmao

  • flames suck cock

  • thats why Steve smith put it in his own net right?

  • NO, what are talking about? Did you see that I wrote, give Calgary credit?

  • oh my god, how bad would you feel after doing that?

  • i'd feel awful. what's even worse is that they were the defending champs and he was a rookie. he went on to win three more (i think...) with them.

  • yeah, the oilers went on to win 3 in a row after that i think.

  • Nope, just two. They won two cups before this, and two cups after this.

  • and the fifth in the 89-90 season

  • This I know, I was just somewhat indicating that the Oilers did not win three cups. I should have indicated that fifth one. For some reason, I had Gretzky's cups in mind.

  • Like he did probably...

  • I love how a little over a decade later Steve Smith was the Flames captain

  • RIP Don..this is my first real big sports memory as a Flames fan.

  • no, Calgary lost in the finals to Montreal that year

  • no, Calgary did win

  • 1986 Montreal won the cup. It was 89 that Calgary won the cup in Montreal. The only visiting team to win the cup in Montreal.

  • The only visiting team to beat the Habs in Montreal. I think the Rangers beat the Maroons back in the 30s in Montreal.

  • The Canadians and the Maroons were 2 different teams. The Maroons were only around for 14 years, The Habs have been around for 100. To think that the Canadians have won 24 cups in a hundred years and only had one visiting team win it in Montreal is pretty amazing.

  • is this the year calgary won?

  • YEAH BEREZAN REPRESENTIN!!!

  • That cost the oilers a stanly cup. They would of destroyed patrick roy and the montreal canadiens that year in the finals i dnot care what anyone says.

  • i say you fucking wish

  • Chris Phillips just pulled a Smith a few moments ago. As soon as it happened I thought of this. Hilarious.

  • Only that game ended by a margin of more than one goal. Smith's blooper cost them the game, they were tied before it happened.

  • Your wrong. How do you know Calgary would not have won the game any way? You do not. Now stop whining, and grow up.

  • It's spelled "you're" in that context, cw.

  • cwcwful: or Edmonton could have won Being 'grown up' should exclude bias.

  • @eldorado61guy I agree, so what. Could have, should have, Would have, once again so what.

  • Poor Steve Smith. He got over it though, and had a great career. Funny that he went on to find a home with the Flames organization.

  • @mac100100 That's the Steve Smith everybody should remember, and not this one!

  • Did you know it was Smith's birthday that day too??

  • @Lonestarr022 Smith was in the giving mood on this night instead of receiving.LOL

  • bummer

  • classic

  • if anyone has better footage please post

  • Speaking as a HUGE Oiler-hater, there is no better footage than that! :)

  • lol
