the instrument itself could cost around 15000 PHP. Agong and gandingan around 20000PHP. you can find sellers online if you google "kulintang buy" :) Alternatively, you can ask around for sellers if you live in Cotabato or Marawi (may be much cheaper), or if in Manila, go to Tiendesita's Mall in Bonifacio, they have a kulintang shop there :)
I live in a city with high Filipino demographics, and they hardly know what this is. What the university downtown did was they sent their etho-musicology majors down to our high school to subject us to other forms of music other than the popular radio rubbish, and one of the presenters brought his kulintang ensemble down with him. I'm glad he did, and I was glad that he gave us all a chance to play around with them. (:
stupid Indonesian,Malay terrorists... they should leave the country stupid 'MILF' soldiers, like common what kind of terrorist group calls it self MILF?!?!
if you call liberators people who blow up markets and schools, take people hostage and make almost everybody live in a constant fear of death, that really sounds like terrorism to me.
@pyrosheen forgive me, nakalimutan kong sabihin nah p'ra sa kanila "liberators" sila... i'm a muslim p'ro ni isang beses ay hnd ko nagustuhan ang pamamaraan nila... at oo mga terorita cla... hnd lng mga christians ung naapektuhan pti rin nmn ung mga muslim na gusto ng mag-move on...
i just posted a video response; of my daughter having a go, albeit reluctantly, at the kulintangan. this was xmas last year :) it's also an indigenous instrument where i come from (sabah)

Hi campoxanto! Thanks for the comment! As to Ylang Ylang, I'm sorry but I have nothing on them.
Prof Aga Mayo teaches kulintang at UP Diliman. She has a website with a contact section. Since youtube doesn't allow me to post the web-address; search for "Kulintang | and the Maguindanaons" on google :)
My friend ("Melodique" on youtube) has studied under her. Give him a message and he could help you out a bit more too :)
Sorry for my late reply, but I hope this helps :) Maraming salamat ulit!
from the style of their clothing and all kind of 'modern things' available in this video, I guess this video either created in the mid 1980!
XD... I will download this video cause I likes it!... and dear Muslim brother, please don't arabized your culture like what had been done by Muslim Malay in my country Malaysia!
Suffice to say, the opinion of outsiders is relatively insignificant. If they wan't to move towards the culture of our prophet, they'd be doing a better thing than the americans do with jesus.
I don't really encourage them to give up their old cultures so long as they follow islam, but to actually di scourage it is rather insolent..
@sasunoosan Dude, this video is from a film taken by an ethnomusicologist who did his research in Mindanao in 1966. Check the info, its authentic! lol The clothing the women are wearing are traditional Maguindanao clothes. Thanks for the comment! :)
However, I believe Islam preserved kulintang music as a music form and the other indigenous malay traditions.. My only worry is that a lot of these malay traditions are being eased out by Arabic traditions. I so love the culture of Mindanao. Love, peace and respect from the Waray Nation.
i agree w/ you, friend. the rapid arabization of the islamic world has affected many moro communities as well as other islam-practicing communities. women were the traditional bearers of the kulintang music and culture and notice how they dont wear the arab version of the head wrap. now, so i have heard, many men in mindanaw are discouraging the women from playing kulintang and are now wearing burqas and the hijabs rather than bunning their hear, tandong, or whatever.
Just a little insight, kulintang music may seem Muslim to us Filipinos but i believe kulintang has been around even before the Madjapahit empire when muslim as a religion took over south east asia. Thailand which is a non muslim country also has similar embossed gongs as well as in Bali where the religion is predominantly Hindu.
This is similar to the Riau malays of Sumatera... they play a very similar music to the Kulintangan... Do you know why I think Kulintangan came to the Philipines ? During the overthrown of the Srivijaya malay empire by the Javanese majapahit... Many Srivijaya exiled to the South Philipinnes, bringing their tradition together...
Assalamu Alaikum Anak1, Thank you very much for uploading this, I grew up not far from Simuay, can't believe you have lots of this Maguindanaon videos!!!! I must say, one of a kind!!!! Because of you, my 4 boys will see what beautiful culture I came from!!!!! InshaAllah, they will visit this place....

Cesar Montano? dba bisaya din yun? pfff!! taz, sasabihin PRIDE OF THE PHILIPPINES! bakit di nalang PRIDE OF THE VISAYANS!? maruruming politiko, nsan ba? nasa LUZON!

First thing I also noticed was how relaxed the players were. Especially the dabakan (drum) and the kulintang players. Music was simply hypnotic. Sounds like Binalig but the agong rhythm sounds different.
