  • I've always loved Motown music, but got an even deeper appreciation and respect for it after visiting the Motown Museum in Detroit. it's hard to believe these great sounds came from an old house with l950s recording equipment and that the classic 'reverb' sound was created by leaving the bathroom door open.

  • @5BGVO4 I got as far as the front porch! They were closed on the day I happened to be there for a family function, but even from outside, me and my relatives were just staring at the place trying to reconcile how those big sounds came from that little building. Berry Gordy was incredibly kissed by good fortune to have people who were very knowledgeable about the techincal end of things- but still, it was smallness of the studio that actually ended up being a plus in the Motown Sound.

  • Not only a great classic from the First Lady Of Motown, but your video is superb. The editing is unbelievable!!! Cool photos that correspond at the exact beat. Very well done. Kudos and thanx 4 sharing.

  • @DaddyClb Wow! Thanks for compliment! I love this song a great deal and it's always fun meeting others here at you tube who love this music. Once I figured out how to have fun with the "movie maker" program on my computer, I've been having a lot of fun with it- what a great way to showcase these fantastic singers and musicians! Thanks again for watching- and stop by often!

  • This song is on Motown Memories LP volume 1, it was compiled by the dancers at Blackburn Mecca round about 1971 when they had Northern Soul nights on a Monday night. Trevor Hall was the DJ and he worked for BBC Radio Blackburn which was how he made contact with John Marshall who worked for EMI at the time.

  • While some people think that "My Guy" is her best, this is my all time favorite from the late Mary Wells. She was the original queen of Motown and I always think of a more simple time and growing up in the 60's.

  • @newhotman1001 Part of the problem is that radio today will only play a couple of Mary's classics with "My Guy" being played the most. That's a shame because it limits peoples' perception of how many great songs an artist may have. I don't believe many people are even aware of all the songs that came before "My Guy." While I do feel that "My Guy" was one of her best songs, I do feel that Mary definitely had so many more songs that deserve to be included in the "Winners' Circle" of her best.

  • @newhotman1001 THIS WAS MY FAV ALSO. IT WAS THE 'B' SIDE

  • EXCELLENT EDITING...Especially on the "well, well, well" and the clapping parts...very creative!!!

  • @AggiePrideATL WELL! I REALLY appreciate that! I never know if a lot of people notice that sort of thing, but I like putting it in there. Something visually to match the tempo and changes in a song. To me it's just a fun thing to do and when someone catches all the editing, well that's icing on the cake. Thanks very much for your kind compliment!

  • @comanchegirl1 hello! i've always had a big spot in my heart for Mary and I love that there are so many of us who love this woman.

  • classy lady

  • @joelperronful you have said all that ever needs to be said about this lady, my friend. pure class.

  • who played that great organ-one of the Funk Bros?

  • @u000drl Definitely one of the Funk Brothers and I'm guessing it was Earl Van Dyke.

  • A joy to listen to. I love the Temps' version too. Great video.

  • @utubemusiccritic Mary certainly had the charisma and charm in her voice as well as being beautiful to look at. I'm very happy you enjoyed the video!

  • Hey that's Marvin Gaye banging out dem funky congas!

  • This is just one about as good as "the one who really loves you" and Mary's voice is just too good for words.

  • @11xzxzxz Yes! I love her voice and you definitely have a good point- sometimes you just can't find enough words to adequately describe how good something can be and Mary's voice is definitely in that catagory!

  • Wow what a classic and the pics are great :) Luv her!

  • @celinanunez hey, glad to have your comment- this truly is as you said, a classic! I'm glad you like the photos- tried to get them as clear and sharp as possible. Mary was just pure class and really had such a classic beauty as well!

  • This song, which my older sister bought in 1963, was released as Motown 1048

  • It's easy to see what Berry and Smokey saw in her in 1960. They were unmatched IMO at judging talent, which I guess is why Motown was SOOO successful.

  • It is sometimes staggering to look at all the talent Motown had and how versatile these people were- from the artists to the musicians, songwriters and producers.

Mary was definitely one of the best by far- even more impressive when you realize she hadn't set out to audition as a singer, she only wanted to audition a song she had written!

  • Motown Mary as she was known. She sang songs on her own, without saying, Mary and the etc's. (ie: Supremes, Vandellas, Pips, Miracles, . The best of her era, at Motown, for what she had to work with. Thank Godness for her talent to rise abovethe other great female singers at that time trying to make their own mark. ( Aretha, Tammi Terell, Gladys, Patti, Mavis Staples, Roberta Flack, Etta James. The list is deep, God Bless all of the Sweet Soul Sisters that are from the begining!

  • @koolheat55 I so agree!! We have had some strong, sweet-sounding sisters to make their mark in music history!! Let me add Brenda Holloway to your list; she is a Motown legend too!!

  • That she is indeed, and I've got a couple of her songs included as well. She's an incredible vocalist, absolutely and I hope more music lovers here in the U.S. will come to add her to their list of favorite singers!

  • I agree; I will have to find some of her music to add to my collection as well.
